I feel so naive right now-I didn't think this would really get to this point: So they actually want to make it possible to turn around and say, 'I am a man/woman' without any kind of doctor's confirmation of gender dysphoria?

What the fuck is this going to do to women's prisons? How many female criminals will end up abused, raped, killed by MEN in what should be safe places for them?! This is nothing to do with trans people-this is just going to be taken advantage of by predatory men.

This is the Scottish form in 2011

In a census you need to tick sex. As a protest I would put down male.

Gender would then be male.

If we all did this then the majority of the population would be male. Which is clearly nonsense.

These were the questions asked in the 2016 Irish Census form

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 24/07/2017 12:22

If we all put down male or non binary etc

Won't the government look at that and say, look at all the gender non conforming people we should definitely amend our laws based on gender

Elendon · 24/07/2017 12:12

A minority sexual orientation?

I doubt very much that bisexuality is a minority sexual orientation.

Datun · 24/07/2017 11:35

Naturally the realities would still be there but they would be something not permitted to be discussed in public discourse or polite company.

Exactly, it's misogyny and men's rights activism to a tee.

Your brain determines your sex.

Therefore no such thing as sex discrimination.

Job done.

MrsGWay · 24/07/2017 11:33

Reading the definition of trans I doubt anybody exists who isn't.

nauticant · 24/07/2017 11:29

It is so frustrating to hear supporters of this huge change refer to "gender" when they clearly mean "sex". They're deliberately avoiding saying "sex" because they know lots of people are going to start thinking about this and will say "Hang on, you're saying that if a man says "I'm now a woman" his actual sex has changed? Just on his say so? But that's clearly nonsense". People will be much less likely to kick off when they have in their heads an effeminate boy experimenting with eye shadow or a teenage sk8er girl being free to have a pixie cut and wear clothes similar to those of her male friends.

I suppose the next trick will be to amend birth certificates to refer to "gender" instead of "sex". But of course were that to be done then that part would need to be left blank because these days no one can say what gender a baby will identify with once they are older.

But according to this logic, "sex" should be removed from birth certificates anyway because for any individual their sex is unknown until they've expressed what it is to be (well, for this week at least).

Which leads me to think that the goal is to remove the concept of "sex" completely and replace it with self-identified gender. This would provide a straightforward way to eliminate as concepts feminism, sex discrimination, and, of course, women generally. Naturally the realities would still be there but they would be something not permitted to be discussed in public discourse or polite company.

Bloke convicted of first-degree murder in 2003 in a street-gang contract killing case is being moved to a woman's prison. He's also pre-op, of course. Nice for the women.

I do like that the people going through those survey results are soon going to have a first hand experience of what self-identification really means: that they've ended up with a load of impostors filling out a form not meant for them. Not quite the same as a male impostor taking a woman's place in the Olympics, but you take the drops or comfort you can get.

I still doubt the PM does, not to mention the ultra conservatism Tory backbenchers. However, they have to pick their battles and I don't see them sticking their necks out for women's causes. My reference to Labour is partly because, as I said, my MP is Labour and partly due to the fact that I would expect a basic understanding of gender oppression from a party that is so switched on about class, race, etc.

DJBaggySmalls · 24/07/2017 01:03

PoppyJ1
Maria Miller first supported all this when she was chair of the Women and Equality Committee, now the chair is Justine Greening. Both are conservative MP's, both support it. The majority of Labour MP's support it as well.

I am absolutely livid about this. I have been working in womens rights volunteering for a while and a number of us have been trying to fight this. I am sick of women like us being bullied for:

  1. Wanting safe spaces such as women's toilets, changing rooms, rape crisis centre
  2. Using words for female genitalia (and even the word "women") because they are now "trans exclusionary"
  3. Refusing to refer to myself as a "cis woman" cos apparently only trans women are women. Fuck off.
  4. Believing provisions granted to women to protect them and promote their opportunities (sports, colleges) should not be infiltrated by gender dysphoric males
  5. Fearing that many of these new laws will leave women vulnerable to voyeurism and sexual assault
  6. Believing it is impossible to "feel like a woman" if you are a man because you have no reference point
  7. Believing there is no such thing as a female brain and certainly no such thing as a female penis
  8. Fearing that the UK will turn out like the US and we will all be referred to as "birthing individuals" with "front holes" in official documentation
  9. Wondering what part of someone's gender identity cancels out a male body, male chromosomes and male reproductive system
10. Knowing that being a woman is much more than clothing or lipstick

I've written to my Labour MP asking how they plan to protect women from many of the above points.

One of the most galling points is that apparently there has already been a nifty provision that means aristocratic daughters cannot suddenly identify as men and swipe titles, property an peerages from their longer brothers.

This is an insidious attack on women and women's rights. Labour should be ashamed for welcoming this. I am half glad we have a Tory PM because I cannot see TM buying this, even though she may have little recourse.

So being assigned female at birth means...

Changing gender without any medical care/advice/opinion - just saying 'I'm a woman' and it being so

Identify as what you like and have your say in the comments box.

DJBaggySmalls · 23/07/2017 21:52

If toilets are to be gender neutral they dont need to put urinals in the womens. There wont be a womens toilet. Just one toilet.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 21:45

IAmNotDarling theve got to be fucking kidding. Maybe also smear tests, eh...?

shinynewusername · 23/07/2017 21:33

Be warned, this is a link to the Daily Fail article on the proposals. But I heartily recommend the comments, if you need cheering up.

thebigbluedustbin · 23/07/2017 21:18

Since there is still such an advantage to being male in my career, I'm going to change my name to the male version and tell everyone I'm a man in a woman's body who identifies as female.

StormFrontage · 23/07/2017 20:52

I think every woman should respond to that LBGT-only survey. Identify as whatever the fuck you want in order to be allowed to participate.

I once kissed a girl, so I'm bi, right?

IamNotDarling · 23/07/2017 20:40

Ah, but look at this

www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/07/04/do-transgender-women-need-breast-cancer-screenings/

It depends on if they've transitioned or not, but still it could distract funding from women's health issues.

IamNotDarling · 23/07/2017 20:36

misskelly makes the excellent point about health issues - I wonder if it is time to lobby groups representing women's health issues to get them to pick up the cause from that angle?

NoLoveofMine · 23/07/2017 20:30

I agree guinnessgirl. It's extremely concerning and I find it astounding this is now being considered at such a level; how are the dangers inherent in this not being considered, or is it just because women are seen as irrelevant?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/07/2017 20:13

Let's go with CIA then Wink

VestalVirgin · 23/07/2017 20:06

Queen, the moment spaces for whatever new name for women you can think up become a thing, there will be males who identify as such.

I don't think it likely that you can get safe spaces for ciswomen (I assume that's what you meant to type?), as the TRAs argue males are a subset of women, like black women, and therefore it would be discrimination to have separate space where they aren't allowed.

But if you succeeded in having facilities set up for ciswomen, the next thing that'd happen is that a male would identify as ciswoman. I mean, they call themselves biological women already. Nothing is too silly for them.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/07/2017 19:44

Do you think we could tank back the term CIA woman and demand CIA woman only spaces?
