The highest paid women earns a quarter of what the highest paid man earns and two thirds of the highest paid are men.

No surprises there.

sashh yes, some very interesting journalism now would be to find out the rates of pay of cleaners at the bbc for men and women (and proportion of each doing this job relative to the proportion of each at the top). Expect it is all contracted out but I still think the difference between the pay at the top and the bottom (would be interesting).

nappyrat · 20/07/2017 08:22

Sorry if this has already been said, but the figures don't show the full picture at all!!

Everyone knew this info would be published & they've all got much savvier about how they get paid - all through Indy production companies etc.

The figures look bad, sure. But the reality is far far worse I expect.

I've emailed the CEO of the Beeb to tell him my shock & ask what the BBC is doing & cc'ed big cheeses (ironically, female!!) from the Dept of C,M & sport.

Do the same!!

IndominusRex · 20/07/2017 08:15

We can draw some very clear lines of comparison from this list - Graham Norton & Claudia Winkleman both do big prime time shows, a radio 2 show and side projects but he gets over 3 times what she does, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, Alan Shearer and Gabby Logan, Jeremy Vine and anyone from women's hour.
Matt Baker/Alex Jones seems ok ish seeing as he does more shows. Emily Maitlis should tell the beeb to fuck right off.

Lottapianos · 20/07/2017 08:14

Sorry, Radio 4, not BBC 4

Lottapianos · 20/07/2017 08:11

'I did like a snippet I heard on Radio 4 driving home, "So why does having a penis mean you are paid more?"'

My DP heard this too. It was Eddie Mair, BBC 4 presenter and Tormentor-in-Chief of Boris Johnson Grin he's ace.

SonicBoomBoom · 20/07/2017 08:04

however,in the case of shearer and lineker they are basically being paid shedloads for the credibility for previously being top footballers. you cant say this about the woman presenters.

Gabby Logan is doing a pretty good job on MOTD2. And wasn't she a top gymnast in her day?

I don't buy the excuse of "its a market, and the men, by coincidence, have a higher market value". Why? Because the market is sexist, perpetuated by the BBC (and others) paying ludicrous amounts to men, and not women. I mean, Nick Knowles? WTF?

And did anyone hear the Eddie Mair interview with one of the BBC head honchos yesterday justifying why he was given, handed, the top job that no women were able to interview for? Pillock.

adanu98 · 20/07/2017 07:43

disgrace..
its all there in black and white and no way to deny it..

how any of these people male or female can be getting the amount of money they are all getting is beyond me though.eddie mair 300k???!wtf?

Oshbosh · 20/07/2017 07:33

Stephen Nolan, overpaid yes but a pp mentioned a niche role, he actuslly works 3 jobs over 7 days, he does a 5 day a week radio show on radio ulster (with the highest ratings in the country) and a weekly TV show here too.

FairfaxAikman · 20/07/2017 07:20

I agree that they are overpaid. Doesn't mean there isn't a disparity though - you can see it even in the lower pays.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/07/2017 07:15

I agree Fairfax the men are grossly overpaid. The interesting comparison is to ITV/Channel 4 BBC white male presenters pay (and presumably throughout the corporation) is in excess of free market norms and is an abuse of public funds as well as evidence of endemic racism and sexism.

sticklebrix · 20/07/2017 07:07

No eye roll big enough, Fairfax.

I tend to agree that the men's pay should be reduced to that of the women's in this situation though.

FairfaxAikman · 20/07/2017 07:00

I'm having this discussion on a forum dedicated to my male-dominated hobby.

Apparently there is no gender disparity- women are getting paid what a presenter should and the men at the top are grossly overpaid. Hmm

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 20/07/2017 06:07

Well one benefit of this is that when MRAs start banging on about how there is no gender pay gap they won't have a hairy leg to stand on.

Silver lining and all that Grin

sashh · 20/07/2017 05:39

It's appalling and yes, there is a gender pay gap but I honestly can't get too worked up about it when they're all on such ridiculous sums and it just underlines how unequal our society is.

But the BBC is publicly funded and should be an example to other companies so it does matter. Also if they are paying like that for presenters what are they paying for the cleaners, secretaries etc?

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 19/07/2017 23:27

It's appalling and yes, there is a gender pay gap but I honestly can't get too worked up about it when they're all on such ridiculous sums and it just underlines how unequal our society is. This list after the Grenfell fire and subsequent public discussion about firefighter pay. It's shameful. The talk about a market is rubbish - we always hear how many out of work actors and journalists there are. They could find equally talented people for a fraction of the cost. I for one am sick of seeing the same faces all the time. Their self serving justifications for why they're all worth so much just don't make sense (particularly when you have equally popular presenters on such different sums, albeit all well paid in very nice jobs, but I'd be inclined to see if Clare Balding would take over Lineker's job - she's so much better value for money!)

I have a friend who is a university lecturer, she is one of the top experts in her field in the world, but her pay is less than 60k. I asked her why not more (given her stature I thought it would be more). She said that there is a pay scale set and agreed across the sector and when she'd asked why pay wasn't higher the answer was always that the line of people wanting her job is very long - maybe true, but surely that's true of media jobs too? I really think the line of people wanting these presenting jobs who can do it must be far greater than the line of people qualified (to PhD level) in a very specialised academic subject? I'm not saying my lecturer friend is worth more, rather that these presenters are worth less, and all the "reasons" for such high pay don't stack up.

squishysquirmy · 19/07/2017 22:52

The awful thing is that I bet the BBC are better than other media organisations on this.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 22:42

Why is Tess Daly on less than Claudia Winkleman?

She does other BBC shows on TV and radio.

StarCrossdSkys · 19/07/2017 21:54

Why are they paying anyone £400k a year to present the One Show? The numbers are boggling. They always argue that it's because of the competitive market trying to poach top talent. I'm not at all sure about that. There is a real limit to the amount of work available and it can't be that hard to find someone capable out of 60 million people who live in the country. We manage to find loads of people with the skills to be doctors, teachers and lawyers. Do they seriously think there only a handful of special, special people who can present a daytime tv show?

Childrenofthestones · 19/07/2017 21:41

Why is Tess Daly on less than Claudia Winkleman?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 21:11

Alex Jones, too. She gets paid £50K a year less than Matt Baker.

Overall she doesn't do as much for the BBC as Matt

SueMacartney · 19/07/2017 20:48

Sonic she does less presenting than the others on Today.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 19/07/2017 20:23

Matt Baker fronts Countryfile as well though, which is a huge ratings banker unlike Jones's side-products, so that doesn't seem too unreasonable.
I'd love to see the salaries analysed per hour of TV/Radio product. That'll be why Claudia gets more than Tess btw - because they do the same work on Strictly but Claudia also does 2 hours of radio for 12 months of the year, and Sewing Bee.

This Guardian breakdown is very good at comparing like with like - although I'd disagree with a few of the comparisons, Huw Edwards vs Fiona Bruce and Gary Lineker vs Clare Balding are bang to rights. Balding's agent must be bracing themselves for some challenging discussions.

SonicBoomBoom · 19/07/2017 20:21

Why is Sarah Montague from the Today Programme not on the list, but all her co-presenters are? Confused (other than because she doesn't have a penis, obviously).

Mishal Hussain does Today, From our Home Correspondent and BBC News, so I guess that's why she's on there.

WellTidy · 19/07/2017 20:20

Matt Baker also presents Countryfile and commentates on gymnastics for the BBC.
