Male TERFS...

This is something which has been bothering me for while. As more and more people hit 'peak trans', more and more men are being gender critical. The most famous examples being Tucker Carlson, Ricky Gervais, and Piers Morgan. The other day, Graham Linehan (writer of Father Ted and IT Crowd) tweeted about the misogyny of calling women terfs. The response he received was half negative/ half positive, but the negative posts contained no death/ rape threats (as a lot of attacks on female terfs usually do). For example, the reaction to Jenni Murray was largely negative, with the positive responses being anonymous.

It seems that men are being taken more seriously than women on this issue. Linehan is not experiencing the same backlash Jenni got. I think people see his opinion as more valid than hers.

My point is, and I hate to say this, but we need men to help more people reach 'peak trans' and for the issue to be taken more seriously. It's safer for men to do this as their not in danger of losing their jobs, credibility etc, in the same way that women are.

Here is Graham Linhan's Twitter which shows you what he said: twitter.com/Glinner

Thoughts?

Holly came from Miami F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Used women's loos at service stations on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She said, hey cis scum, take a walk on the wild side,
Said, hey TERF, take a walk on the wild side.

BMacklin · 21/05/2017 15:36

Yes Terfing! I have thought exactly the same thing. It's terrible that women can't seem to be able to speak about this without being ridiculed or told to shut up, but if you agree that there is such a thing as a patriarchy (which I do) then it stands to reason that until men speak up about this few will listen. Men are the ones who have the most influence and power so of course they need to be engaged in the debate. Not only that but be proactive in getting it shut down. I've got a list in my head of men I want to write to about it precisely because of this.

What's the Friends/Beatles things they could tantrum over?

There were two lesbians on Friends (Carol and Susan). Will they be saying that one of them is actually trans? I haven't seen Friends in a while so there might be more stuff.

The Beatles song Get Back has the lyrics - Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman but she was another man.

ChocChocPorridge · 21/05/2017 15:25

Yeah - that bacteria one is an outright lie:

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2695466/

In particular, microscopy of Gram-stained neovaginal smears revealed a mixed microflora that was even more complex and denser than the one observed in biological women with bacterial vaginosis

Xenophile · 21/05/2017 15:10

The Beatles thing is the song Get Back.

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/05/2017 14:48

What's the Friends/Beatles things they could tantrum over?

Also, with regards to bacteria in transwomen's neovaginas - I don't think a low bacteria count was this person's experience - www.refinery29.uk/transgender-vagina-surgery.

It's definitely great to see men speaking out about this though it also saddens me that women are still not taken seriously on an issue until men speak out about the same issue. It's not hugely surprising though as women never seem to be taken seriously on anything.

That Lou Reed stuff is ridiculous. Seriously?! What's next, Friends? The Beatles?

And yes, that National Geographic article is really frustrating to read. It really bothers me that they wrote transgender female not transgender woman. Female is a sex not a gender so therefore cannot be changed. It's infuriating.

DJBaggySmalls · 21/05/2017 12:36

Interesting the trans activists havent come out in force against Friends yet. Its almost as if they've never watched it.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/05/2017 11:44

More men need to see transactivist posts like this one :

Male TERFS...

I saw an interesting video by a transwoman the other day. They talk about the Lou Reed song as an example of how 'trans stuff' (the word they used would get me deleted) has always had an element of sexiness to it.

Collidascope · 21/05/2017 10:56

That article you linked to was infuriating, DJ.

This particularly:
'an acronym for “Trans Exclusive Radical Feminist”. The people it is used to refer to are Radical Feminists who don’t include Trans people in their activism. That is not a slur or an insult but a literal, factual description of their position.'

What the author means is they don't centre trans women in their activism. And even if the author equates 'not centralising' with 'excluding', they're still wrong. Any activism that campaigns for protection of the right to have an abortion or the right not to be grabbed by the pussy does support the rights of many trans men. It isn't therefore trans exclusionary.

BigDeskBob · 21/05/2017 10:02

WhereYouLeftIt, you are right, they are some good comments on that link, its refreshing. The only thing that touches men is dating and sex. Men fear, both for personal safety and socially, of being with a MTT. And that's the biggest hurdle the trans community face. That's why there isn't a a male equivalent of the cotton ceiling, forcing themselves into male pants may well be their downfall.

Complaining about Lou Reed is mind blowing. Absolutely bonkers. It may represent how young and unaware tra are, or how rigid their thinking is.

WhisperingLoudly · 21/05/2017 10:01

On a side note, I hope the university will also be apologizing to women every time they play a misogynistic song?

This is what really grates. I cannot put the radio on or go to the shops, let alone visit a bar or restaurant without being subjected to endless glorifying references to rape, DV and abuse. Often sung by perpetrators of the same.

But one song, written in support and without hate and not only are the fuckwit TAs getting upset but the university is falling over itself to apologise to the snivelling professionally offended.

MyBeloved · 21/05/2017 09:48

I'm agog at the Lou Reed article.

Arnold Layne by Pink Floyd, anyone?

When will this madness end?!?

AdalindSchade · 21/05/2017 09:43

Women are always taken less seriously than men in every topic

VoidoidDash · 21/05/2017 09:39

Lou would be on our side without doubt. As would bowie. Wishing Nicky Wire would catch onto all this.

VoidoidDash · 21/05/2017 09:37

The positive responses seem to mostly be women saying thank you.

But yes women are not taken seriously on this issue.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 21/05/2017 09:36

What??

They are criticizing Walk on the Wild side Shock

What about Dude looks like a lady?

Seriously though...Walk on the wild side is a classic

And yes to more men speaking out,

DJBaggySmalls · 21/05/2017 09:36

This is the kind of thing Graham Linehan has to put up with;

Terfing · 21/05/2017 09:16

That Lou Reed thing is hilarious!

On a side note, I hope the university will also be apologizing to women every time they play a misogynistic song? (Which is a lot of songs!)

Interesting comments being made on this article:

Contestant on ABC's The Bachelorette slammed for transphobic views.

"A 31-year-old firefighter from Orlando named Bryce was asked what his biggest dating fear is and he replied: ‘The chick is actually a dude.’"

LozzaChops101 · 21/05/2017 00:44

Yeah, the lefty dudebros get all the kudos of supporting something perceived to be "progressive" (ha) whilst risking absolutely nothing themselves. Very convenient.

BlueSunGreenMoon · 21/05/2017 00:35

Yes agree men don't get half as much abuse, surprise surprise... And I do begrudgingly feel that they need to be on board for this to be taken seriously. It's difficult though. Women and children are the ones with most at stake so it's harder for men to see/care about the issue imo.

LozzaChops101 · 21/05/2017 00:32

I only just saw the Lou Reed stuff! WOW. I can't wait til they discover The Kinks Grin
