Men bashing

Hi all,

I don't have a real purpose to this thread other than to just voice my confusion and possibly hear some other opinions.

I would identify as feminist - although for want of a better word, I would rather say I'm an egalitarian. I enjoy reading these threads, and comment on some. But what really disheartens me is all the man-bashing Ive seen. I have a male partner who is my world ♥ wonderful male friends and family members, and when I read some of the things on here I can't help but feel very defensive of the men in my life.

Is this the new wave of feminism? Or am I missing something? When I was growing up (with my mum as an avid feminist), I never heard "men this" or "men that" it was always about how women can strengthen and empower themselves WITHOUT putting men down.

Leia i get it now. "good" men don't know what to do,and in reality it's impossible for them to speak out/fight against patriarchy and misogyny. Poor men, poor your husband.

NoLoveofMine · 07/05/2017 00:33

Any of those options would be better than whining "not all men".

PrincessLeia80 · 07/05/2017 00:28

Ok well he'll start with his name, but he's unsure how he should go about getting others to add to the list? Should he go house to house, advertise in the local paper or walk through town wearing a sandwich board?

Datun · 07/05/2017 00:27

PrincessLeia80

Maybe it's not clear, but when ever anyone on these threads talks about men, it's a gimme that they're not talking about all men. There's even an acronym as it's so widely known, NAMALT - 'not all men are like that'.

It's just assumed. It takes too long otherwise to preface each and every comment with the acronym.

RebelRogue · 07/05/2017 00:22

Princess 2 (ish) women a WEEK die at the hands of their partner or ex.

NoLoveofMine · 07/05/2017 00:19

I've not seen any list of men standing up for the rampant misogyny, rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault that women and girls put up with daily. Tell your husband to work on that, yeah?

PrincessLeia80 · 07/05/2017 00:13

RebelRogue yes I'd rather have my daughters grow up with a loving father than someone I've never met be abused, selfish yes so feel free to abuse me! Also I've not seen a long list of women sticking up for Martyn Brown who's case was the reason I responded to this thread.

NoLoveofMine · 07/05/2017 00:13

Exactly Rebel. Women have been beaten up for just ignoring street harassment, but poor men are at risk for challenging misogyny, apparently.

NoLoveofMine · 07/05/2017 00:12

NoLoveofMine that seems fair, if he gets beaten up, put in hospital or stabbed to death I should be happy he was a feminist to the end.

Yeah. I never run any kind of risk just walking down the street answering back to street harassment, your poor husband might get beaten up for telling another man he's sexist.

AssassinatedBeauty · 07/05/2017 00:08

I really can't see where people have said "all men" repeatedly on this thread.

PrincessLeia80 clearly your DH should make a judgement about his personal safety before challenging anyone.

RebelRogue · 07/05/2017 00:07

NoLoveofMine that seems fair, if he gets beaten up, put in hospital or stabbed to death I should be happy he was a feminist to the end.

But you'd be happy to have a sister, friend, daughter, coworker beaten up,put in hospital or killed because men can't be arsed to challenge patriarchy and misogynistic behaviour?

RebelRogue · 07/05/2017 00:04

No one frikking ever says that. The absence of NAMALT after every single sentence does not mean ALL men, down to the very last one.

PrincessLeia80 · 07/05/2017 00:04

NoLoveofMine that seems fair, if he gets beaten up, put in hospital or stabbed to death I should be happy he was a feminist to the end.

NoLoveofMine · 06/05/2017 23:57

He should stop it by challenging other men and opposing every single sexist remark or joke he hears from another man.

PrincessLeia80 · 06/05/2017 23:54

NoLoveofMine my husband has never whined about this I'm complaining he's lumped in with all men! I'm simply asking how should he act to stop this? RebelRogue I only need to read first 2 pages to get into double figures of posters who say all men!

RebelRogue · 06/05/2017 23:51

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil if for good men to do nothing.

NoLoveofMine · 06/05/2017 23:43

PrincessLeia80 maybe your husband should stop whining about how he gets lumped in with misogynist men and challenge men who intimidate women, who harass girls, who rape and abuse women, challenge sexist jokes from his friends and colleagues...

"Good men" do fuck all.

NoLoveofMine · 06/05/2017 23:41

I am also fed up of men bashing! Only tonight on my way home I was harassed only twice by grown men, I'm such a misandrist I should have thought about all those men who didn't make me feel intimidated and scared.

RebelRogue · 06/05/2017 23:32

Men as a class abuse, rape and murder. Women as a class are victims of such crimes.
No one said ALL men or ALL women. Might be helpful to RTFT.

PrincessLeia80 · 06/05/2017 23:29

Rebelrogue merely a thought that men are not all bad and women all good. Guardianlions my husband is not about proving his own position he is against all forms of abuse. Previous posters have said that good men don't do enough to be against abuse and rape I'm merely asking how my husband should be less complicit and nor proactive in dealing with the problem?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/05/2017 23:23

Emotions aren't like pie, Princess, with so many slices to go round. If men reduce their helping to one slice of aggression that doesn't mean the women automatically get - and must eat - all the rest of the pie

If men became less aggressive, I can't see any reason why women should become more so.

GuardianLions · 06/05/2017 23:13

Leia Why is his main priority proving his own position?
Surely it would be obvious if he demonstrated it by challenging sexist behaviours as he comes across them?

RebelRogue · 06/05/2017 23:09

Aww so we need men to stay violent so we don't become violent? How interesting...

PrincessLeia80 · 06/05/2017 22:36

Men are responsible for most "war, murder, child abuse and rape" however there are also far to many women who take part in such things. If men were to stop being so aggressive would that lead to an increase in female aggression? Many posters suggest all men are to blame because they don't take a stand but what are decent males to do, my husband hates rapists, abusers and murderers but how should he show this to prove he's not the same as those who are?

user1487175389 · 06/05/2017 22:12

Pointing out that men are responsible for pretty much all war, murder, child abuse and rape isn't 'putting them down' it's simply an objective description of crime statistics. If your 'few good men' want to pitch in and help us eradicate these heinous acts, I'm sure womankind would welcome their help with open arms.
