Do you think some of the driver for "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" is to do with bad science teaching in the US?

Just reading this thread on Reddit and loads of the posts are very scientifically naive. I can't decide if posters are being disingenuous or are just very uneducated about basic science.
It got me wondering whether the American thing of teaching creationism as equally valid a theory as evolution has generally undermined science and critical thinking.

What are the top say three things that made you know you were the wrong sex? Without resorting to these stereotypes that you think are alien.

My head? How did you know you were a woman? Did it come naturally or were you confused and distressed when people called you a girl?

QuentinSummers · 07/04/2017 15:02

It's interesting. Does the lion decide to grow his mane and that's what make him male? How would that work? Or does gender only determine biological sex in humans? Have we somehow evolved ourselves out of biology by the power of mind over matter? If lions thought hard enough, they could get rid of that pesky mane and be lionesses yes?

Biological sex is defined by gender genitals and chromosomes but you guys already established you believe in the validity of intersex people?

Hmm
Datun · 07/04/2017 15:02

*Strange how nearly all trans 'stories of Discovery'' start out with "i always knew i was really a girl when I preferred ballet to football"

On what planet*

I reported the nonce one for being really fucking offensive. Sorry datun.

Diddums :(

Datun · 07/04/2017 15:00

QuentinSummers

That's okay. Smile

I generally think these comments should always be allowed to illustrate the points that everyone else is making.

"Biological sex is defined by gender"
Actually, tell you what SSR, why don't you explain that one?

Biological sex is defined by gender

Oh dear lord!

< not kisses, those are all the chromosomes making mincemeat of this lunacy on this thread>

*No one is saying that gender dysphoria is not real! What don't you get?

Other than gender dysphoria, what do you think is the criteria? And why are you so very angry?*

Long term gender dysphoria is the criteria. Who's angry? The frustration is coming from the people arguing me, reporting my comments and resorting to jokes because they don't have anything else to say :(

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/04/2017 14:57

"Biological sex is defined by gender"
No it isn't. And if you think it is, your science is way shakier than a creationist's.

mypoordoggie · 07/04/2017 14:56

really SSR?

Strange how nearly all trans 'stories of Discovery'' start out with "i always knew i was really a girl when I preferred ballet to football"

But we have people actually believing they can change sex yet I'm the naive one Grin

Datun · 07/04/2017 14:55

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger

I think so too. I can't work out if they're deleting because it's abusive or because it puts trans such an awful light.

SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 14:55

Did you guys run out of steam? Biological sex is defined by gender but you guys already established you believe in the validity of intersex people? Now...

I suspect MNHQ are monitoring this thread Datun and deleting irrespective of reports.

jellyfrizz · 07/04/2017 14:53

Your masculinity is defined by the thing between your legs? Seems like a personal issue.

You're confusing gender and sex.

Gender = masculine/ feminine / load of old bollocks societal stereotypes about who likes pink and is good at maths and reading maps.

Datun · 07/04/2017 14:52

venus

LOL do you know what that word means?

Projection much?

QuentinSummers · 07/04/2017 14:51

It's comedy gold that's for sure datun
Is a lion's masculinity defined by his mane? If you cut it off, does he turn into a lion? Like Sampson and his hair. Strange religious parallels going on.....

OP posts:
SSR24479 · 07/04/2017 14:50

If my DC said they were trans I'd have a long talk about why they feel that way, and no doubt find its because some arsehole said it's because they liked pink or some bollocks like that.

That's painfully naive.

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/04/2017 14:48

Loathe as I am to acknowledge SSR24479 (because I think their gender is 'goady fucker' - I'll bet that is listed on Everyday Feminism as a gender, everything else is), I have been drawn in by "Define what 'changing biological sex' is.".

It is impossible. Totally impossible. From the instant of conception, your sex is unchangeable. Gender is socially constructed, so yeah, change away. But - gender is not sex.

A brunette remains a brunette however much they dye their hair blonde. They may take on the appearance of being blonde. But they are still brunette.

Datun · 07/04/2017 14:48

Please don't anyone report any of this. It's gold.
