Sorry, it's a mirror link

I don't usually post about this stuff, but it's really annoyed me this time.

Now 'men' can get pregnant? So 'men' will need maternity leave, 'men' will need maternity services, probably somehow different to women's.

Is it just me or does the fact they are calling this person a man instead of a transman, allow men (people born as men) to take even more from women under the trans rights umbrella?

Who would it hurt to call this pregnant person a transman?

I guess we should be grateful this person was born as a woman and is therefore socialised to not put themselves first.

On the egg freezing I think it should be offered when appropriate but in my opinion the priority should be given to women who require lifesaving treatment, not because of optional hormones.

Sex is described at birth. Gender roles are then coercively enforced according to the sex described. If we can remove the gendered expectations then children can be happy in their sexed body whatever their personality and interests.

As an aside I found it really interesting watching this happen with my niece and nephew. My dad interpreted everything my nephew did in this way. "ooh look at him building/playing with trains/bricks. He has a real engineers brain". My niece it was all about her social skilIs. This was pretty much from the time they first started sitting up.

I agree with your second post as well slithy

I dont really understand why its so wrong and 'transphobic' to believe that

Makes much more sense that someones brain is telling them that they are in the wrong body

Rather than being 'born' in the wrong body

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 22:01

Ah, no. The sex/gender was a general musing on language (I think Gender started being used for male/female years ago instead of Sex, because sex sounds A Bit Rude.

But it's just muddied the waters, IMO!

Re freezing eggs: I think the NHS are obliged to balance budgets and medical best interest. A future female partner would have a better chance of conceiving with a sperm donor and her own eggs, I would think, than frozen eggs.

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 21:56

I agree with your second post, slithy.

Will have to check back re first post as to what I meant!

slithytove · 12/01/2017 21:56

See that is so frustrating Seek!

How on earth is a gender assigned at birth? By putting female babies in pink and boy babies in blue?

Genders aren't assigned. Genitalia is factual.

I do believe that some trans people truly feel trapped in the wrong body, feel that having their set of genitals is wrong, feel detached from it, like it doesn't work properly.

It's a dysphoria, like those who feel they should be missing a limb.

I believe that for most trans people, it's that they see the stereotypes associated with the opposite sex and believe that to be part of that stereotype, they must be the opposite sex.

This can and should be counted with the destruction of gender as a concept.

Or is that too simplistic?

In response to a few posts directed to me:

Tartle: yes, I feel if there is a medical treatment known to destroy fertility required to help an illness, then yes, egg/sperm rescue should be offered as part of it.

Helen; was that (sex/gender) directed at me? I agree that they wouldn't have been able to have the baby themselves, but who knows what their future partner might want.

Qwerty; that all depends on whether you believe in gender identity, masculinity and femininity. I reject all three. So yes, I believe that 'gender' for want of a better term, can completely be divorced from biological sex. It appears that you agree? And I think one of the issues is that transpeople believe the opposite.

Thanks speak

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 12/01/2017 21:03

They are very educated Sad

But i think they are looking at...shall we say different websites

CoteDAzur · 12/01/2017 17:40

"where has this facebook person got the "all embryos are female" from"

From the depths of that dark abyss we call Ignorance, would be my guess.

Anyone who has had secondary school biology would know that the embryo is either XX or XY.

SpeakNoWords · 12/01/2017 17:40

Rufus I think OneFlew explained it well earlier in the thread with:

"At most at eight weeks the embryo has not developed any external markers of sex however the sex of the cells is fixed at that point."

So all cells of an embryo are a sexed from conception as XX or XY, but the embryo has no visible external evidence of being male or female. My understanding is that features develop which later on change and specialise depending on whether the embryo is male or female. So the same feature would eventually become ovaries in a female and testicles in a male, but when it starts to develop it's neither one nor the other yet.

CoteDAzur · 12/01/2017 17:28

"just conjecturing that that is how a transperson would put it"

Why exactly do you feel the need to clutter the thread with (probably false) arguments other people might use to back up their erroneous views?

"I would counter the idea of a male and female psyche"

You would be wise to do so. Not on this thread, though, since nobody has argued for such a thing on MN that I have ever seen.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 12/01/2017 14:56

Actually its ok

I just looked on bbc bitesize

All overys have the x chromosome

Sperm have x or y

Two x make a girl and one x and one y make a boy

And its the sperm that decide...sort of

Right its clearer now

So where has this facebook person got the "all embryos are female" from

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 12/01/2017 14:50

Oh god i am going to have to read up on this and i am sooooo lazy Sad

qwerty232 · 12/01/2017 14:29

Cote I did say 'Not saying I go along with that distinction necessarily - just conjecturing that that is how a transperson would put it'. Your response is therefore rather unfair.

I would counter the idea of a male and female psyche. Or one that is not the result of socialisation. I have no knowledge of any evidence that such thing exists.

If you have some, please feel free to bring it to my attention.

qwerty232 · 12/01/2017 14:09

Thanks Helen. Will check it out.

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 14:03

Or, to be more polite and scientific, for an overview of the bias and environmental factors introduced, often unwittingly, into such experiments.

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 14:02

"to your knowledge is there evidence to support the existence of a gendered brain independent of environmental influence?"

I would recommend reading Delusions of Gender for an overview of "brain sex" bullshittery,

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 13:59

"Helen, you clearly know more about the science of this than anyone else on here. "

Nope.

I was replying to Rufus regarding a question about a past article on this subject.

I have a science background and can speak in general terms about hypotheses and potential modes of action, but I have been very careful to post in this language of possibilities rather than definites.

There are regulars on this board active in biological science; not sure if any are posting right now as most of us namechange a fair bit.

Floggingmolly · 12/01/2017 13:57

...that surgery would arguably be an improvement
Grin. Amen to that.

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 13:56

Core = Cote

Stupid autocorrect

HelenDenver · 12/01/2017 13:56

"Those changes are rather subtle in comparison to what we are discussing here. No environment will change a human brain into a rodent one, or a male brain into a female one.

FYI, what I mean by male brain here is one whose cells are XY."

Yy to this, core.

CoteDAzur · 12/01/2017 13:53

"a transperson would make a categorical distinction between the brain and other parts of the body in terms of the degree to which they determine their trans status."

They... what?

"They would maintain that they have a female/male brain in a female/male anatomical structure"

That makes as much sense as you "maintaining" that you have a female stomach in a male body.

Have you heard of something called DNA? It is not possible for a male (XY) person to have a female (XX) organ. Even if you transplanted that XX brain into the XY body, that would mean alien DNA and the brain would be rejected, leading to death if not promptly removed.

In the case of the dimwits believing menstruation and pregnancy in transwomen, that surgery would arguably be an improvement.

WankingMonkey · 12/01/2017 13:41

Apparently this was on the TV yesterday, husband got a confused phonecall from his mother. Swiftly told her that this is just a female who 'is a man in her head' which provoked even more confusion about 'why the hell is this news then'.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 12/01/2017 13:28

I just filled in a survey about academic freedom - you can guess what was on my mind as a limit to that!

And then on the last page was asked my gender, and whether it was the same gender I was 'assigned at birth'.

So I don't suppose my responses are going to make much difference!
