Why can't it just say 'Family Organiser'?

And it was only a fiver too!

BeyondTheStarryNight · 07/01/2017 16:50

Oo, I found a purple one, with kitcheny things on it (not cupcakes - I mean cooking implements, good as it hangs in the kitchen) that doesn't say "mum's" :)

SapphireStrange · 05/01/2017 17:03

What really strikes me is that it seems to have a contradictory message. On the one hand, it's saying that 'Mum' is obviously the grown-up/wears the trousers – she is the one who will buy and use the organiser, therefore she is the capable one.

On the other, it seems to suggest that 'Mum' will only like and buy and use the organiser if it's festooned with cutesy pictures of birds and hearts and presents, in sickly colours, as if she were a child.

thatstoast · 05/01/2017 16:57

I'm not angry about the calendar.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/01/2017 16:20

It just seems a rather pointless thing to expend energy being angry about when it can easily be avoided.

Because toast, we have to be continually pleasant, kind, agreeable and nice. It's how to totally get things sorted, given how well it's worked so far... Hmm

thatstoast · 05/01/2017 15:29

Why can't we be angry? There's lots of angry men (at least 12) and they're doing ok as a group.

OP posts:
PoochSmooch · 05/01/2017 07:47

oh, ok, I'll amend that.

you called us bitter and angry, said you were truly afraid of becoming like posters here because feminism has nothing to offer you. you finished by saying "you lot are awful". I inferred the "man hating" element from the tone, but you did not say it.

is that better?

Dolphin308 · 04/01/2017 22:05

Hi Pooch!
I said no such thing. This is a direct copy and paste:

"I've become more and more drawn to feminism in the last few years. I've tried to talk about it to my friends but they just don't want to know - they dismiss feminism as a bunch of bitter, angry women. I joined Mumnset today to discuss Feminism and to learn more about it. I've click on a couple of threads and it would seem my friends were right! This thread more than any others proves it!

Sorry you lot are awful!."

Nobody said "man-haters" you just made that up.

I'll happily accept your apology.

PoochSmooch · 04/01/2017 13:10

I know that flumpy was being flip - I picked up on it because user had just called us a bunch of bitter man haters on another thread, then highlighted flumpy's post as being sexist. So it will get dragged to other parts of the board in user's flounce from FWR as "jesus christ, these feminist harpies as sexist AF, aren't they?". I think we get enough of that already.

On-topic: I don't have an organiser. I'm not a mum, so I can't get one. SO SAD (

Elendon · 04/01/2017 12:56

I just bought for pennies a 'family organiser' from Aldi. It has a pin board added to it as well. Also the picture is very neutral, gardening based, which is good for me.

thatstoast · 04/01/2017 08:54

I am a millennial. Google calendar or similar would be preferable but DH chose to buy a phone that's not compatible with anything. So crap calendars it is. ~because of patriarchy~

OP posts:
pklme · 04/01/2017 08:06

I think it is because it is intended for children to give as a Christmas present, because all mum's love being given a wife work present from DCs. Like aprons and tea towels. Because women are so hard to buy for.

KonMarieMyCrapAway · 04/01/2017 07:41

I read you as being flippant, flumpy. Like many of the posters before you! Obviously a bit too dry for the context!

(In our family we've adopted the use of 'sarcasm marks' when we need our meaning to be crystal clear. ~ Because we're so cool. ~)

BeyondTheStarryNight · 04/01/2017 07:32

Seneca - we use both, a family iCloud calendar and a paper one in the kitchen. Still manage to miss things though as we are both crap

(So crap that this years hasn't been bought yet, will have to do it today)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/01/2017 04:54

KickAss have you tried googling "family organiser"? I did.

It is nonsense to say this style is the only style available. The ones marked in this way are not even the dominant style. This particular one was way down the search results.

Feminisim seems to be failing miserably by your argument. Don't couples talk to each other? Arrange their lives mutually? Woman can't even choose to buy a non -sexist calendar because hey, the patriarchy won't allow it.

SenecaFalls · 04/01/2017 03:09

A bit of a detour, but the part that perplexes me is that so many gen-Xers and millennials use these paper organizers. I'm all digital, and have been for years, and I am pretty old. In fairness though, the only family I have to organize these days is DH and me, and he can be trusted to organize himself for the most part, in spite of owning a penis.

KickAssAngel · 04/01/2017 02:44

Lass - there are way too many studies which show that your thinking, although logical, bears no relation to real life. If it weren't true about the number of women who do the organizing, then those wouldn't be the dominant style of ones sold. Just this thread shows how it IS 'the norm' for mum to be in charge of the thinking for this stuff. The only way to avoid it is to specifically search for non-mum ones, rather than those being the norm.

Read Wifework sometime.

Or anything by Betty Friedan.

Which came first? The patriarchy, or the marketing which perpetuates it?

thatstoast · 03/01/2017 21:25

I think I might start my own range. Some working titles:

Non gender specific calendar for control freaks.

Awesome calendar of awesomeness for awesome people with awesome penises

Mums who can't be bothered to extensively research calendars calendar

OP posts:
LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/01/2017 21:03

Nope.

There are plenty of organisers available, if one is needed, which don't have the word "mum" on them.

So far as individual households are concerned it's up to the individual penis bearers and individual vagina owners to organise responsibility for how their households are run. There is no law that says "penis-wearers don't have to do the thinking, planning, organizing of the family" or that bans women from speaking up or discussing it with their partners.

KickAssAngel · 03/01/2017 20:40

She bought it as it's the cheapest one. It's the cheapest one because shops make/sell lots of these for mums. They're made for mums because penis-wearers don't have to do the thinking, planning, organizing of the family. Penis wearers are only able to be competent at work, where they get paid more for being penis-wearers.

Does that make it easier to understand?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/01/2017 20:11

Nope, it's definitely the "patriarchy"

Not much chance of smashing it then if you are wiling to collude with it when an alternative calendar was readily available.

Sorry , but I find it perverse to buy this calendar and then start a thread complaining about how awful it is.

It has a very girly floral pattern on it, now I come to think of it Grin

Ah well.

QueenOfTheSardines · 03/01/2017 19:13

I've just done the annual set-up of the new year A5 diary.

I do take the organisation "wifework" on. DH is very good and uncomplaining at following instructions so it works for us but TBH it is a lot of mental overhead that he doesn't have.
