Great music by women

This may not be the right place or forum for this thread but just in case: I feel music is far too dominated by men. What great songs are there by women? I know most of my favourite songs are by women, I'd love to hear more.

haven't read the full thread so sorry if someone's mentioned them already. in the 80's my sister had the album of the 'Proper Little Madams', it was a great LP and I'm going to ask her if she's still got it! I just found this on youtube:

qwerty232 · 18/01/2017 17:28

This is a male/female duo but I just wanted to share it anyway cause it's ace. It comes from a whole album of superb cover versions.

jaxxyj · 18/01/2017 09:49

Anyone got any recommendations of excellent women /bands who are currently touring? One of my New Years resolutions was to go and see some new music. Thanks

And only one mention of Nina Simone?!An artist who was so influential in the civil rights movement. One of the most political of all American artists.

GloriousGusset · 15/01/2017 02:50

And I've instantly thought of Florence Ballard. Founding member of The Supremes. Treated pretty shabbily.

GloriousGusset · 15/01/2017 02:48

Only one mention so far for the amazing Sandy Denny!

tigerdriverII · 15/01/2017 01:29

Gretchen Peters

I'm sorry IamAmy who started this has left (unless she is lurking or under a different name)

qwerty232 · 09/01/2017 22:33

Suzanne Vega is wonderful. "Tom's Diner' is one of my favourite songs.

There has been some great music from women this year. This is fabulous, as is the whole album:

HeddaGabbler · 09/01/2017 22:30

Don't know if she's been mentioned but Suzanne Vega. Awesome talent.

Some female artists I enjoy:
Beyoncé
Demi Lovato
Britney Spears
Christina Aguilera
Tinashé
Halsey

(Sorry if you hate everyone on this list)
