I seem to be hitting #PeakTrans on a daily basis now and thought it would be useful to have another general thread to discuss/post/share

If you haven't seen Magdalen Berns' recent blog post it's really worth a look

I can almost see the thought process that went behind that ridiculous cover.

"Shouldn't we include a regular woman and write 'female'? Oh, hang on, if we do that then it might imply that the transwomen who are there aren't really female. Better leave it out."

I am getting so desperately, desperately TIRED of fucking transactivists.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/12/2016 09:27

purplesagefem.wordpress.com/2016/12/16/transwoman-makes-some-terfy-points-about-danielle-muscato/

This made me snort Grin in a nutshell "Danielle Muscato doesn't look like a woman so isn't one even though they feel like one" This said by a TW...

Datun · 17/12/2016 08:54

I pointed out on FB that it is interesting that male is featured but female is not. "There are two females you transphobe" was the quick and predictable answer.

And we're back to having to define ourselves as uterus bearers.

You could try that numberseven. After all they've left out 51% of the global population, which ever way you cut it up. No-one can argue with that.

numberseven · 17/12/2016 04:48

Comments on Twitter seem to largely be that actually women are featured as MtT are women

I am new to this feminist, TRA debate but I have being doing my research and I am definitely Spartacus.

The whole trans movement and ideology goes against everything women have been fighting for and is just another form of male privilege and oppression.

That article cover is appalling. It has just removed women from the gender argument in one swoop. Not only that but this is meant to be a scientific magazine and to me gender is a social construct where as sex is biological fact.
I do not believe that you can change sex no matter what you do you will always be the sex you were born.

soundsystem · 16/12/2016 17:13

Thank you shniynewusername, I was struggling to articulate my issue with it, and I think you've hit on the crux of it

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 16/12/2016 17:04

Graham Lineham was already high in my estimation but I am even more impressed by him now. Thank you Graham!

soundsystem · 16/12/2016 16:53

Marythecanary I was just coming on to start a thread about that cover (but thought I'd check here first).

My facebook is full of people who are outraged by Graham Linehan's "transphobic" comments and my brain hurts.

That's the pool thing on fb

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2016 13:47

It's all rubbish.

It seems to basically go gender = personality, and unless you are an old bigot sex is irrelevant.

OlennasWimple · 16/12/2016 13:43

so androgynous = presenting as no particular gender

Bi gender = presenting as two genders. (Different from "gender flexible"??)

Not sure what the practical difference between those two categories is...

(Why are we trying to come up with lots of different labels? How about a "gender revolution" which does away with all this, and simply says "you can be a man or woman and it doesn't matter how you dress, what colours you like or what your interests are, you are still a man or a woman and that's fabulous"

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2016 13:37

Help! WTF is "bi gender"?

"Bigender is a gender identity which can be literally translated as 'two genders' or 'double gender'. Bigender people experience exactly two gender identities, either simultaneously or varying between the two. These two gender identities could be male and female, but could also include non-binary identities."

shinynewusername · 16/12/2016 13:35

PS I know you're not defending the Twitter viewpoint, It'sAll - my previous post was aimed at the idiots who are Smile

IndominusRex · 16/12/2016 13:34

On another point, I've seen a fair backlash on Twitter about that gender revolution bollocks which is heartening.

shinynewusername · 16/12/2016 13:33

Comments on Twitter seem to largely be that actually women are featured as MtT are women

Whether you believe that or not, it misses the point. According to National Geographic, 'male' is still a category - it is only 'female' that is surplus to requirements.

IndominusRex · 16/12/2016 13:33

I can't work out how to link it but The Pool have posted an article by Juno Dawson on the back of the Nat geographic article and childline stuff, there are some good gender critical comments on the fb post which could do with a few spartacuses (spartaci?)

OlennasWimple · 16/12/2016 13:31

Help! WTF is "bi gender"?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2016 13:17

So no need to mention women at all in this discussion about "gender revolution" as they call it?!

Comments on Twitter seem to largely be that actually women are featured as MtT are women

SpeakNoWords · 16/12/2016 13:02

MaryTheCanary that is astonishing! So no need to mention women at all in this discussion about "gender revolution" as they call it?!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2016 12:28

This

quadrant.org.au/magazine/2016/12/gender-dysphoria-child-surgical-abuse/

Is a long, but very informative and referenced read regarding the transing of children.

MarytheCanary I was Shock at that, but then we women don't seem to matter very much.

MaryTheCanary · 16/12/2016 11:32

Wow, I don't often post on this board, but... did you see the new National Geographic's alternative cover on Gender Revolution?
www.self.com/story/national-geographic-transgender-cover

There is a bunch of people lined up, labelled, from left to right of the picture:

Intersex non binary
Transgender female
Transgender female [again!]
Bi-gender
Transgender male
Androgynous
Male

Spot the missing category, everyone....!

I simply cannot believe this.

shinynewusername · 15/12/2016 21:50

Yes, 'ze' is ridiculous. The sensible thing, which already happens a lot in informal speech, would be to accept 'they' as a gender neutral singular. In informal speech, "Somebody I know told me they thought Mumsnet is great" sounds more natural than the correct "Somebody I know told me she thought Mumsnet is great." And we have already accepted the change in usage of "you" from a plural to a multi-purpose singular or plural (abandoning 'thou'), so I don't see why we can't do the same for 'they'.

shins · 15/12/2016 21:39

True, it would be useful. Can't see "ze" catching on though.. makes me think of Allo Allo or something!

shinynewusername · 15/12/2016 21:23

Jane Fae is a transwoman who regularly writes articles disregarding women's feelings and needs, I don't like the attempts to erase gender here

Agree. Am not defending the article as a whole, just saying that there is a feminist argument for a gender neutral pronoun. The English default of 'he' excludes women and s/he gets very awkward in long sentences where you keep having to use his/her. We often get round it by using 'they' or 'you' but this doesn't work in all contexts.
