I seem to be hitting #PeakTrans on a daily basis now and thought it would be useful to have another general thread to discuss/post/share

If you haven't seen Magdalen Berns' recent blog post it's really worth a look

It would be interesting to see whether transwomen demanded skirts. I imagine the policy would change.

Then if someone wanted to wear trousers, the policy would reflect that too.

I wish women had that kind of power.

MaryTheCanary · 02/03/2017 12:25

Quite surprised that the TAs aren't demanding extra-frilly laydeeee skirts for marching in, so that their new gender can be properly affirmed. And camouflage paint involving lots of badly applied eyeliner.

MaryTheCanary · 02/03/2017 12:23

"I like the phrase 'Gender fascists' used to replace ' Trans Activists'."

My personal favorite is FARTs (Feminist-Attacking Radical Transactivists)....

Datun · 02/03/2017 10:40

Yes there is an undercurrent of and guess what? This time it isn't even women, it's transgenders!

Nonetheless I still think it is helpful, especially as the minuscule number of transwomen vs sweeping policy change is being highlighted.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 02/03/2017 10:21

The funny thing is that Daily Mail article can be read as though transactivists have taken over from feminists as being the biggest threat.

It's almost as though they'd mock the decision to replace skirts with trousers if it was driven by feminists, but shock horror, it's actually another even crazier group who are demanding it. Am I just reading this judgement because it's the Daily Mail?!

mirrorisnotmyfriend · 01/03/2017 21:36

Crunchyside, it shouldn't be dominating the agenda, but tran activists have totally hijacked feminism, in an extremely swift movement. We have to discuss it before it actually becomes illegal for us to define ourselves and gather without the presence of males.

Stopmakingsense · 01/03/2017 21:26

The Daily Mail are definitely becoming critical. Almost every article they write is either questioning or disputing the ideology.

I'm only amazed they haven't made it more sensationalist than they have. Because they could.

I wonder how far they'll go.

Gingernaut · 01/03/2017 07:43

Oh God/ess. I'm so embarrassed. Blush

Some group in Spain isn't pulling it's punches. They put the this ad on a bus.

One response was

"Put the advertisers and people who paid for it on the bus, then burn the bus with the doors and windows locked give the entire bus a very long class on how biology and sexual dimorphism works."

I’m a little (bit more) confused about a news item today about the RAF. It’s in both the Daily Mail and The Sun, but I’ll write a precis rather than post links. Wink

It has been proposed by the top brass that servicewomen are no longer to be allowed to wear skirts on parade, in the barracks, or during public events. They must wear trousers. This is so transgender personnel don’t feel excluded. Confused

Now, I recall that some years ago, when initial training became mixed, males and females, the skirt had to be redesigned as it was too narrow for women to match the stride-length of the men. (And, indeed, there were concerns that making women match the men’s stride-length wasn’t good for their hips/pelvises. But never mind about that, eh?)

Apparently, in 2001, servicewomen were permitted to wear trousers on parade, and I guess that was because some women are tall and even the redesigned skirt wouldn’t work for them. I don’t think transgender was an issue 16 years ago.

Presuming that the transgender personnel in question are MTT, a skirt would be problematic for them, being generally longer in the leg. So, rather than redesign the skirt yet again (or, heaven forfend, go for a shorter stride-length) it’s much better to get rid of the one symbol that distinguishes the females.

Although I do think trousers are more practical for women (many servicewomen wore battledress during WWII), this seems all about the feelz. Apparently, there are no known statistics of the number of transgender people in the RAF, but it's reckoned to be "in the tens".

Mercy - tremendous articles

Crunchyside · 27/02/2017 22:03

It's probably been suggested plenty of times before but I do wonder if MN should now have a separate topic for trans issues/discussion.

Out of the top 10 threads on Feminism Chat at the moment, 6 are trans related threads. And many more beneath that. I feel like it's totally dominating feminist discussion spaces these days.

Because it seems mad Divers, it seems mad because it is mad.

helpimitchy · 27/02/2017 15:33

Would a post op m to f trans person be regarded as having been fgm'd?

helpimitchy · 27/02/2017 15:19

We had a transwoman on here a while back who was looking forward to getting her letter from the doctor calling her for a smear test

Shock
DiversAlarums · 27/02/2017 14:38

This might sound stupid so please bear with as I'm a little confused. Also apologies if covered already.
Right, the safe spaces issue- why must trans women demand access to women's spaces? If we dispense with the binary gender matrix, then surely we are saying that there are various genders. So trans women isa different gender to women, as is genderqueer, riotgrrrl, etc. Therefore if we are providing safe gendered spaces, surely a transwomen group is more appropriate than a biological women's group as they actually are identifying their gender differently.
Secondly, if we are dispensing with the gender binary, which is described as being heteronormative and exclusive, why are trans people rushing to be identified within that binary? Surely the purpose of dismantling it is to provide many ways of defining gender. It's rather depressing then that having dismissed the binary as inadequate, some trans people appear to rushing to construct it again.
Can anyone explain this? Because it seems mad

Not sure if this has been discussed, but just wondered what people feel about point 8 in this article www.acpeds.org/the-college-speaks/position-statements/gender-ideology-harms-children

  1. Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse.

help

We had a transwoman on here a while back who was looking forward to getting her letter from the doctor calling her for a smear test.

helpimitchy · 26/02/2017 18:04

Chest feeding? Confused wow, that's where things are heading then?

JellyWitch · 26/02/2017 18:00

Help - we already have the call for reference to chestfeeding rather than breastfeeding. Even though men have breasts.

helpimitchy · 26/02/2017 17:58

Just a question.

If TAs (m to f) wish to access women only spaces and object to being excluded from those spaces, would they consider that they should have the right to access:

Gynaecology clinics because they consider that they menstruate?
Maternity Units even though they biologically cannot bear a child?
Routine breast screening clinics?
Lactation consultants?
Female fertility clinics
Family planning clinics - for iud's etc.

Are these places objectionable to them because they're automatically excluded by virtue of their biology?

If females are not to discuss menstrual and fertility related problems because they cause offence, where would we stand in obtaining help in these biologically determined areas when we need it?

The mind boggles and things could get really bizarre Confused
