they apparently cannot accept someone can have a different emotional and psychological identity from their biological sex

What the fuck Julie Bindel? How does one have an emotional or psychological identity that is in any way the same or different from one's biological sex? Modern day progressive biological determinism.

helenlewis

Yeah. A lot of us have written to our MPs etc but it feels like we're swimming uphill.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/10/2016 15:01

Hi Helen,

What's your Twitter @? There's a lot of Helen Lewis'...

helenlewis · 24/10/2016 14:50

Thanks Datun (have updated my username). I'm pretty down on internet petitions - they're easy to ignore if they are not directed at anyone. The person to lobby is Maria Miller, as chair of the W&E committee who made the recommendation about self-declaration; or Justine Greening, as minister for women and equalities.

Datun · 24/10/2016 14:35

Hi Helen

Great article. I wondered if you have seen this petition on mumsnet. Pretty much sums up the consensus of those who are concerned.

Hi - it's Helen, who wrote the Medium article linked to above. I've just joined now - and wanted to say I'm researching something bigger on this, so if anyone wants to talk they can message me here or on Twitter.

IceBeing · 24/10/2016 13:52

Is it wrong to think that any parent that specifically genders their child, dresses them in a way that is only compatible with one stereotype, only introduces them to activities and hobbies pertaining to one stereotype, trains them in the mannerisms of one stereotype is also guilty of abuse?

I mean it covers the majority of parents...but I still think it is true.

SpeckledyBanana · 24/10/2016 13:25

The JB article is very sensible.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 24/10/2016 13:05

My sons school went to training with stonewall who were brilliant and they began incorporating lessons about stereotyping, different families, respecting others etc into lessons after that.

The stereotyping lessons were particularly good and nobody was pushing any agenda.

Mermaids have no right to be doing this. They aren't experts at all. They may know their own children and what they want but the blind support and encouragement of everyone else who signs up is scary.

ArcheryAnnie · 24/10/2016 12:59

Mermaids is now cashing in with a £40-per-person "training day" at a school in London. to teach parents and staff how to suppress gender non-conformity and homosexuality in their children

www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gender-identity-training-day-tickets-26678507133

Seriously, they have no real expertise on this. This is so dangerous.

schbittery · 24/10/2016 11:22

I know. That's my point - that's the only thing that the poor little boy said in this case about being a boy. The mother tried to use it as evidence of him being TG which is obviously bollocks, pardon the expression!

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 24/10/2016 11:18

That's not GID at all. It's far more complicated than not liking things on your body sometimes.

schbittery · 24/10/2016 11:07

One of my sons of a similar age repeatedly talks about not liking the sensation he gets in his penis when it "flies around" eg when he's on a swing, or a roller coaster or going over a hump in the road. He says it feels weird. He often does a bit of rearranging (as do many adult men I know). I bought him tight fitting pants rather than boxers which has helped. I don't like the sensation of my ample breasts in freefall when running so I wear sturdy sports bras. None of this screams Gender Identity Disorder to me. It's simply part of the human condition to have uncomfortable bits of your body in certain situations!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/10/2016 10:46

It was a good and balanced article. You sometimes never know with Julie.

iPost · 24/10/2016 10:34

She's written for the Mail plenty of times

Ah I didn't know that. I clicked on her byline (Julie Bindle writing for the mail... or something like that) and only today's article was on the list.

FurryGiraffe · 24/10/2016 10:26

Cross post- thank you!

FurryGiraffe · 24/10/2016 10:25

Oh sorry- can see it's referred to in the JB article. Apologies- I'm a sleep deprived zombie at the moment due to a 5 month old who has decided he likes an all night party.

FurryGiraffe · 24/10/2016 10:19

Sorry, can I ask what the story about the 14 year old is that is being referred to. I've missed that entirely.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/10/2016 10:08

Some of the comments on digital media sources have been interesting, especially those on generally pro-trans sites where people have been talking about how liking 'boys' toys' does not maketh one a boy ... yet these same sites do seem to think this if such play maketh one 'the opposite gender'.

I feel sorry for the 14 year old. She's stuck between a rock and a hard place whichever way you look at it.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 24/10/2016 09:28

What with the judge's decision, the story about the 14 year old and Julie Bindel's article we've seen a bit of sense over the past few days. It's cheering. Smile

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/10/2016 08:54

She's written for the Mail plenty of times before, as have other feminist writers - despite their overall editorial view of women they do cover women's issues quite a bit.

Yes, I don't suppose JB would have the Mail as her first choice but obviously the Graun arent going to publish such a thing. Times probably would have.

iPost · 24/10/2016 08:09

...and Julie Bindle, rather than being the subject of one of their stories, is writing her 1st article for them.

I was kind of banking on the mail following up. During the CB/kids company thing, they were one of the few willing to go all "investigative journalist" on it.

Given the some of the content of Julie's article, if the Mail decided to follow through and poke around ...I'd expect them to be focusing their interest on Mermaids, and any other trans expert they can earth up that was involved with the child prior to removal. They can't write much about the actual case, because of restrictions. But they can use it as a hook, and then take the story in another direction where they have much more of a free rein.
