Yes, that was my understanding too re: late transitioners (Caitlyn Jenner). But then you get the likes of Paris Lees. Younger and clearly sexually motivated according to her writings (got to be careful here...). Where does she fit in?

And I agree re Blanchard. He was visciously hounded. Enough to put anyone off.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 08/11/2016 21:24

You're right, as I posted earlier, (03/11 at 0.30), Oneflewover. There's hardly any being done because researchers don't want anything to do with such a volatile and vengeful group. Since Blanchard and Bailey (and, to a lesser extent, Dreger) everyone knows that if there's any chance TRAs won't greet your findings with delight you'd be best avoiding this group at all costs.

LGBT groups in the US are using questionnaires, which are self-selecting, unverified and designed to produce a desired result. It's not always impossible to examine what's known. TRAs make preposterous claims about the murder, suicide rate and lifespan of transwomen, and these can be disproved.

Medicine and science are affected by fashion and politics. Transgenderism is so much affected that research has come to a standstill in the USA, thought the Tavistock is presumably doing lots here. I imagine it helps if all or nearly all the patients are using the same health system, as in here and in Sweden.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 08/11/2016 16:57

Sorry, yes I meant reviled by the TAs rather than fellow academics. Although they were sadly very effective as there are very few researchers who would risk studying anything linked to transgenderism or transsexuality now.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 08/11/2016 15:11

Ray Blanchard, together with J. Michael Bailey, were the subject of years of attacks by a small group of TRAs, but he was not reviled by fellow academics or plenty of other transwomen. The attacks focused on his well-supported definition of different groups under the label trans and his work on AGP. What's ironic is that the TRAs who attacked Blanchard did so not because he misrepresented them but because he did not.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 08/11/2016 15:00

Datun, isn't it suggested by (the much reviled) Blanchard that there are early and late transitioners? Early transitioners are classic transsexual whereas late transitioners are far more likely to be AGP. I know that transactivists have called the old school transsexual types tru-scum before so I imagine that it's quite a sharp divide between the two camps and I could easily believe that there would be a LOT more late transitioning men than women.

This illustrates my point. In terms of trans, to me, this is the real deal.

It is interesting how the TRAs are mostly transwomen. I don't see the same from transmen. I thought it might be because they are born women, but I suspect it's because they don't have a sexual motivation, and are therefore genuine. Like, of course, the genuine transwomen, who get lost amongst the transactivists.

I've come to the conclusion that men and women transition for different reasons.

tubasinthemoonlight · 04/11/2016 18:05

datun, you have not offended me at all. To me it would be a sad day if the GRC is no longer required in order to obtain a birth certificate. I'm not sure what else it is required for though. To my son it was a form of validation. He told me recently that he no longer considers himself as transgender. He isn't any sort of activist, just getting on with life. Maybe lots of transmen are like that which is why they aren't very obvious.

Datun · 04/11/2016 18:02

For me, it's the sexual motivation of late transitioning men, the push for self identification, leaving a loophole for predators and the appropriation of what it means to be a woman.

Flowers for you and your son.

Datun · 04/11/2016 17:58

tubasinthemoonlight

I'm glad for that measure of reassurance. And I sincerely hope I haven't offended you in any way.

I do get very angry with the trans 'movement' but I have spoken to people who I believe are genuine trans so it doesn't include them.

There's another thread started on feminism chat about transphobia which shows the trans-activists up for the fools (imo) they are. They are as damaging to genuine trans as they are to women. And I'm sorry for it.

For you, me and your son.

tubasinthemoonlight · 04/11/2016 17:36

A GRC isn't very easy to get. My son has one and it required a lot of patience and dogged determination to get one. It involves several psychiatric reports, lots proof of having lived fully in the opposite gender for over two years, (my son had proof over 4 years). It requires a declaration witnessed by a solicitor. Also payment of a £140.00 court fee; and preferably some proof that hormones and/or surgery has been started or intended. Then it is decided by the Gender Recognition Panel as to whether it is granted. I have heard of people who have been turned down.

Whether it is easy to fake is another matter. But as getting one involves meeting strict criteria it is better than nothing at all. I really can't see how it is OK for people to simply be able to say they have changed gender; when all they have done is changed their clothes and hairstyle.

There is currently no legal requirement for transgender people to have a GRC though. But at the present time having one is the only way a new birth certificate can be obtained showing the gender and name following transition. To my son the new birth certificate was terrifically important.

Is a straight transwoman attracted to men or women

Great video about this

If Hanora was so Convinced of his/her position, why didn't she/he stick around and answer points?

The more I think about it, the worse it is. Not good for my stress levels...

Is a straight transwoman attracted to men or women

Datun · 04/11/2016 17:21

The majority of people also think transwomen are gay men.

What, because of the dress? What do gay non-trans men think of that?

Come to that, what do gay men think of straight transwomen?

(I've refrained from asking the only two gay men I know, there are a couple and one of them is fairly militant, and I don't want to offend him).

tubasinthemoonlight · 04/11/2016 17:18

Datun: Is Hanora from Mermaids???

Fuck! I wasted all that time.

Yes, from Mermaids. In fact the use of the word womyn has probably outed them to anyone who is a Mermaids member as womyn is part of a Mermaids username which I recall. They use the same username on other forums too, and anyone seeing those could see their first name and where they live.

But I'm not going to out them as Hugh089 did to me.

DeviTheGaelet · 04/11/2016 15:56

I think some people believe that a man wouldn't 'lower' himself to wear female clothing unless he was 'genuinely trans'. Another side effect of the low status of women compared to men. So they don't believe that sexual predators would take advantage of self identification 😳

Yep - the very thing that supports their argument ("no man would dress as a woman to abuse women because they'd be mistaken as trans and embarrassed!) Is the thing they are rightly fighting to get rid of ("people should be able to present however they want and be accepted")
Just another contradiction

Amalfimamma · 04/11/2016 14:51

Hanora

Oh my. I did advise you to cool your jets a few posts back but it seems that instead of cooling them you put 90% proof alcohol in them and let loose on the Internet. Never a good idea and in your case proves most of what's been said here for months about TAs.

It's nice to finally see your true colours. Now toddle off to mermaids and tell them how the big bad feminists of MN upset you and insulted you and offended you with the truth and scientific facts their transphobia. It's just a pity that you refuse to see that your behaviour is actually damaging to real transgender people.

ArcheryAnnie · 04/11/2016 14:41

She is no more likely to be going into a womyn's toilet with thought of sexual assault than I am.

Statistically, Hanora she is much more likely, if you are biologically female and she is biologically male. That's not prejudice - that's what the available evidence says, that men and transwomen commit violent crime at the same rate, and that women commit violent crime at a much lower rate.

If you allow your own biases to affect how you view the actual rates of offending in such an extreme way as you have done here, then you have no business working with offenders.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 04/11/2016 14:31

Yes, Datun, but ATM thinks she has a "gender history". I would call it something more Anglo-Saxon myself. Grin

ageingrunner · 04/11/2016 14:28

Also, who wants to approach an unknown man in a changing room anyway and ask him for his credentials? Not something I would feel safe doing at all unfortunately

venusinscorpio · 04/11/2016 14:28

Prawn, you were clear, it was me who misread your post slightly, I apologise!
