Welcome, everybody.

Happy Friday.

Anyone else just listened to The Archers jury special? Something of a curate's egg, the main good bit being 'jackie'.

AmeliaLeopard · 11/09/2016 21:49

I need wine if there is any going. I was at a wedding last night and there were so many sexist comments I don't even know where to begin. No major dramas, it was just so insidious and constant I need time (and wine) to help my brain process a bit.

The PMS thing is interesting. I've never suffered myself - I tend to get upset or angry more often than most regardless of how far off my next period is.

RebelRogue · 11/09/2016 20:18

I'm definitely sticking around if there's black sambuca GrinGrin

erinaceus · 11/09/2016 19:11

Welcome, all newcomers. Take a seat. I appear to have become the landlady despite being unable to cook and not really being someone who drinks very much. I am organised though.

Perhaps we need someone to stock the bar?

So far we have gin and tonic for ninety-nine p and black sambuca. I don't think we'll go in for alcopops but there is wine to suit all tastes and budgets, and tea and coffee and J2O.

Thanks, sentia I'll check into that.

sentia · 11/09/2016 18:39

Seneca, Canadian peameal back bacon is amazing. Can you find a source to ship it south of the border?

SenecaFalls · 11/09/2016 18:20

Hey, y'all. I haven't been in for a while either.

Did someone mention bacon butties? When I was a student in the UK, I developed a love for most all things British. Bacon rolls (I was in Scotland) are at the top of the list. And proper back bacon is very hard to find in the US.

OublietteBravo · 11/09/2016 17:44

Hello - can I come in? I've not been on the pub for a while.

Anyone want to recommend a suitable drink for someone who has to go back to work tomorrow? I've had 3 weeks off, so I'm not sure what I'll have to deal with.

Whatever it is I'm drinking, I'm bound to need something stronger tomorrow evening.

RebelRogue · 11/09/2016 17:36

Dd calls them nappies...LOUDLY...IN PUBLIC TOILETS!!! Doubt that will catch on GrinGrin

Myownperson · 11/09/2016 17:34

Or the "Mummy's Special Tissues" aisle? Blush

JacquettaWoodville · 11/09/2016 17:21

Boots could call the aisle "tampons & towels"

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2016 17:01

One of the things I enjoyed a lot about the tampon tax campaign was Osborne cheerfully using the word in the House of Commons - no longer taboo. I cant remember whether the debate and reporting resorted to the twee euphemism 'feminine hygiene' or 'sanitary products' which resonate with the religious notions of 'uncleanness'. Are there better labels Boots could use on that aisle?

RebelRogue · 11/09/2016 13:40

Erin the cultural link is very interesting and makes sense tbh. There are plenty of cultures/religions where periods are seen as shameful to begin with,so I'd expect very few women would even mention it,much less use it as an "excuse"(back home for example we are not allowed in church if we are on our period) . Add to that the expectation of submissiveness, going on rants or outbursts of anger or whatever would be very frowned upon,or even punished. So it wouldn't be unrealistic to assume that even if women suffer from it,they are conditioned from a young age to hide it or hide themselves.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2016 12:59

Yes, thats the one.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2016 12:59

Yes, thats the one.

erinaceus · 11/09/2016 12:55

paddypants13, I am sure you can, but the chef decides the menu.

AlpacaLypse is serving up bacon butties this morning.

Myownperson · 11/09/2016 12:39

Errol, I had a quick Google and wonder if it was this The Impact of Menstrual Cycle Phase on Economic Choice and Rationality haven't read it all yet but it is interesting thanks.

paddypants13 · 11/09/2016 11:14

I get pms, I get really paranoid and think everyone hates me and is out to get me.

Mind you hormonal contraception has put paid to periods for the time being.

Can I have a milky coffee and pancakes with maple syrup and bacon please landlady.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 11/09/2016 10:28

"manstruating" Grin

I was very virtuous and used up yesterday's leftover rice by frying it with egg, crab, chilli and peas. It was a very nice breakfast.

I've also just read in yesterday's Guardian Review someone's review Confused of the book The Men's Club. He said it was hilarious... Anyone going to read it?

AlpacaLypse · 11/09/2016 10:11

I appointed myself chef. I've done a big pile of bacon butties - help yourselves.

The smaller pile are the quorn rasher ones for the veggies.

erinaceus · 11/09/2016 10:08

Myownperson you may or may not have noticed that I did not volunteer to do anything. I am wondering whether to promise myself never to start the Pub thread again.

I have had my coffee now, and I still would not open AIBU, not on on Sunday.

I like the neologism "manstruating". Will try to remember that one.

OP posts:
Felascloak · 11/09/2016 10:00

That's interesting Errol. I recently heard the term manstruating to talk about men being irrational which made me laugh. Imo men are as likely to get angry irrationally and comfort eat when they are grumpy but in women we just write it off as hormones. Grrrr.

Myownperson · 11/09/2016 08:42

I'd be chef but my cooking skills, or lack thereof, probably mean that's a bad idea.

I can certainly hand out tea and let the landlady enjoy her coffee.

BrewBrewBrew

Link to a transcript of the TED talk I mentioned for anyone interested. link

Why oh why on a Sunday morning would I post on an AIBU about parents asking people to move on a flight?!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2016 08:37

Rebel - me too (before meno obv) . The pms part obv; not getting hangovers is a result merely of being a very moderate drinker not magic metabolism.

I'm sure I read or heard recently (within the last couple of months or so) about a study comparing mens and women's rationality, and in the latter related to their cycle. IIRC there was no difference although there was a variation in women's risk aversion. Given that misogynists are equate emotionality with irrationality that seemed quite important - does that ring a bell with anyone else?

erinaceus · 11/09/2016 07:20

AlpacaLypse Can you ask the chef? I haven't had my coffee yet, but I am sure they can rustle something up. I'm just the landlady, a role which I appear to have fallen into and now feel slightly nervous about.
