I'm fed up with being told hairy is bad.

So after another day of heat where I can't wear shorts because of my leg hair I just wanted to see if anyone else was either fed up with being told that "no hair is beautiful" or ashamed to go out with hairy legs because they feel it's disgusting? I'm so effing hot I just want to be able to be hairy and not be judged!!!!! I can't shave because it brings me out in a bloody rash instantly and only lasts a day, so I wax. That lasts a week max. I wish I could just be a hairy lady and not care but I do care. Didn't know where to post so sorry if this is wrong for feminist chat.

Do as you want. No one should be looking that closely at your legs to notice. Sometimes I shave, sometimes I don't. I have quite dark hairs on my legs and would feel comfortable going out with that level of hair on my legs as in your photo. It's obvious it's just a bit of regrowth.
The only time it's likely to be commented on is among friends. Nicely . As in discussing what we do and what we're comfortable with.

I was thinking just the other day of having a hairy leg winter, just couldn't be arsed the other day. Maybe longer. Armpits I'll see about.

OP, you're not disgusting at all. It's just hair.

Love the Hairy Legs Club link!

to be honest when i dont feel like shaving i just wear a maxi dress no one notices lol Even of the bottom part of your leg showing no one notices

i used to get a rash after shaving but i learnt a good combo shave with mens shaving cream and moisturise with aveeno afterwords

I would love to be part of a hairy revolution!

EvansAndThePrince · 02/09/2016 19:34

I just wanted to pop in and say my DH and I were watching that Naked Attraction thing the other day (yeah, I know, it's vile) and a woman with proper pubic hair AND underarm hair was on it. I tentatively asked what he thought (of the underarm hair, I've plenty pubic hair) and he said "I LOVE it!!!"

Never have I been more chuffed in my choice of husband Grin

CatThiefKeith · 02/09/2016 19:19

I look like I'm wearing mohair cycling shorts ATM, I really am that hairy. In winter it's more like leggings.

If I shave them it grows back within a day or two. I have knees like desperate Dans chin.

I care not, and dh has long since gotten used to it. I think it's time for a hairy revolution personally.

SoHairyAndForeverSpartacus · 02/09/2016 19:10

I could post a picture of mine.. but.. well.. they're very hairy.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 02/09/2016 16:27

I shaved my legs, underarms and arms from as soon as I hit puberty because all the women in my family like to enforce standards of conformity and, seeing as I'm really rather hairy this involved having to shave my legs every bloody day otherwise I'd be called out on it. Yes, seriously. I genuinely believed that having body hair was dirty, it was pretty much stamped into me so I totally get where you're coming from.

However since I've moved away and embraced laziness I've realised that the vast majority of sane people don't even notice if you've got hairy legs. I commented to DP the other day that I was starting to look like a gorilla leg-wise and he pointed out that even at my hairiest, I wasn't as hairy as 99% of men and they all still wear shorts.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/09/2016 08:50

That's an appalling way to choose one employee over another.

whitehandledkitchenknife · 02/09/2016 00:18

True story. I got offered a job based on the fact that I turned up for the interview (summer time)suitably dressed but with impressively unshaven legs. It was a toss up between me and another woman. And the hairy legs won it. It was the early 80s and I was a heavy duty rad fem. (And it was the ILEA.)
Am horrified by all these stories of no pubes. They're there for a purpose.
Have never shaved my pits on principle. Legs did eventually get pulled into a summer routine though.

SoHairyAndForeverSpartacus · 01/09/2016 20:28

I decided in the last few months to completely stop shaving my legs. I've never enjoyed it. It was never something I chose to do. I only did it because I felt like I had no choice, that I had to conform and fit in.

I had to start shaving my legs at about 12, as I am so hairy. I never wanted to start. Being forced to wear shorts in PE at school while already being self conscious was awful, and other kids did make comments. So I had no choice, I had to conform.

It's caused me a lot of self loathing and shame, if I'm honest. I hated my hairy legs. I hated that I would get awful shaving rashes. I hated that I couldn't just decide to wear shorts on a hot day - not a chance if I hadn't shaved that day. And then there's the agony of a sudden breeze triggering goosebumps on shaven legs, all the painful stubbly regrowth... sigh.

So I decided enough was enough. I'm 29 and finally I've decided I don't care if I don't conform anymore. I fucking hate the idea that women need to modify their natural bodies to appease the desires of men.

VilootShesCute · 01/09/2016 17:27

Nobody really. Just the shocked look my dh gives me when he sees the hair!

Who is telling you that you can't go out wearing shorts? I mean specifically, not the wider societal pressures?

2kids2dogsnosense · 01/09/2016 14:26

Ghetto

Me too. We should all be celebrating our sensuous bodies instead of shaving, plucking, and distorting them.

GhettoFabulous · 31/08/2016 21:00

Body hair. And all my body.

GhettoFabulous · 31/08/2016 20:59

I have all my body and I can assure you, I'm not short of admirers. Hair is such an underrated, sensual pleasure.

2kids2dogsnosense · 30/08/2016 15:51

Amber I suppose if I was in a play I might consider shaving the leg that was facing the audience . ..

CancellyMcChequeface · 30/08/2016 14:38

I started shaving my legs when I was 12. Stopped when I was 17 and discovered radical feminism, and have been hairy ever since. Grin Anyone who finds my hair disgusting isn't someone I want to be around.

I understand the pressure, though. I stay fairly covered up for other reasons when I go out, but if that wasn't the case I doubt I'd be confident enough to walk around London in a sleeveless top because of the reaction my armpits might get.

AmberGreyson · 30/08/2016 13:28

i shaved my legs only on the half 'cause i don't care

SoHairy · 30/08/2016 11:38

Haven't read the thread yet (I will!) but THANK YOU OP for starting this. I actually name-changed with the intention of starting a thread discussing exactly this, but got a bit side-tracked and then saw this today.

Back once I've caught up with the thread!

Hasn't it been proven that ladies keeping pubic hair is more hygienic then not keeping it. The pubic hair is there to stop nasty germs and other stuff from getting inside our lady gardens and taking over. I mean it's said that a woman doesn't have to even wash their lady gardens as they self clean (this I could never follow and would never want to follow) but to me the thought of not washing your bits downstairs makes me cringe!!

Miffer · 30/08/2016 07:38

The tendency of younger women to shave their v-jayjays is horrifying. A straw poll in my work found that all three of our under 30s did this. More over they were all surprised us 'older' (I'm 34) ladies didn't. At least it seems to be a bit more equal, 2 of them told us their male partners also shave their bits although not down to the skin.

Kallyno · 30/08/2016 05:38

I don't shave my legs or underarms ever. I swim several times a week and wear shorts. I live in Australia so that's a lot of short wearing and beach going in a pretty misogynist society. For the record, it's not because I can't be arsed. I exfoliate and use moisturiser on my legs and arms and I do trim my pubes so they don't annoy me but I just do not get removing body hair for the smooth prepubescent look. I am about 40 and have felt this way since late teens. More recently I find myself a bit appalled at the normalisation of complete muff removal and feel frustrated with the nonsense reasons people give such as "it's more hygienic". There is nothing unhygienic about my muff! I tidy my eyebrows and fret about upper lip and chin hair and in recent years have started plucking the odd toe hair so it's not as if I am extraordinarily immune. I just think it's a mindset and once you break it and stop shaving for good you get to just get on with life happily. Occasionally I have moments of self conscious doubt but I just tough it out and it passes.
Every couple of years I seem to get curious and shave my underarms, only to regret it bitterly as it is uncomfortable and looks odd. Plus, by the next day everything is bristly. Yuck.

If my partner said he felt disgusted by my leg hair I would honestly LTB but that is because I am getting old and intolerant; in my 20s and early 30s I would have set about reeducating him/ her.

Just give it up. Bras are wonderful, imo, but l think losing the razors is liberation indeed.

"tucked", not "tuned"
