Because Everyday 'Feminism' thinks you are...

If this is the future of feminism then I despair, I really do!

Photos of yourself as a baby? I read it as showing pictures of your own offspring and thereby flaunting your fecundity. A bit nuts either way.

reni2 · 19/11/2015 00:56

Feminism is not about men with body dysmorphia.

I am prepared to support men with body dysmorphia in THEIR fight against the patriarchy, but it isn't mine. Just the way I am prepared to support gay men in their fight against homophobia.

venusinscorpio · 18/11/2015 19:37

I have no words, Laura.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 18/11/2015 18:52

Oh holy cow, I must stay away from links to complete idiots - I'm going to give myself high blood pressure...

startrek90 · 18/11/2015 16:07

I guess i am cissexist. I love my shewee its so practical.

ArcheryAnnie · 18/11/2015 15:09

A baby doesn't generally have facial hair, breasts, an adams apple or other secondary sex characteristics that might broadly indicate whether it is biologically male or female. A baby is generally much the same as any other baby in terms of shape, so doesn't need accommodation for womanly hips, broad shoulders, or anything else which clothes manufacturers sometimes/often gender adult clothing by.

If you see a baby dressed in pink and assume it's a girl, or dressed in blue and assume it's a boy, or accommodate other people who make those assumptions, then the problem is in your sexist gendering of clothes.

tl;dr showing baby photos is fine, however you present as an adult. Get over yourselves, anyone who thinks otherwise.

VestalVirgin · 18/11/2015 12:21

Seriously?

Ah, well. That should counter all the claims that "cis" is not a slur that is used against women.

Apparently, it is impossible for men to be cissexist.

LauraMipsum · 18/11/2015 12:17

Funny you should ask Vestal, it is apparently not cissexist for men to pee standing up but it is cissexist for women to use a device that allows them to do so.

Maybe we should ask men not to flaunt their male privilege by going home alone at night, or by wearing trunks instead of swimsuits. Also, they should wear makeup and high heels at all societal events that require such of women.

And, hey, get rid of pissoirs, I am sure transmen feel it is cissexist to pee standing up.

ChunkyPickle · 18/11/2015 11:07

you're trans, not your trans - my English is going to pot these days I've noticed.

ChunkyPickle · 18/11/2015 11:06

We've all come to different conclusions on the baby photo thing, but my reading is that as someone who isn't trans, I don't even think twice about showing pictures of me as a baby around (gloss over that it's not exactly something I do a lot anyway). If your trans, then those pictures will be of a child who is dressed as a different gender to how you are dressing now - hence it outs you, and you can't do it.

It's 'cis-privilege' to not have to think about what could out you, and just live your life.

startrek90 · 18/11/2015 10:53

I'm sorry I am being thick but whats wrong with baby photos again? I show mine off to friends and family. I am really confused Confused

And surely the point of fashion is it doesn't realistically fit anyone who isn't a supermodel?

caitlinohara · 18/11/2015 10:38

If I wasn't on Mumsnet I don't think I would even have heard the word. I'm not sure whether that means that clearly I am out of touch and I need to get out more, or whether there is such a tiny tiny percentage of people who feel this way and see it as an issue that it's not worth worrying about.

ArcheryAnnie · 18/11/2015 10:35

I just went to see if I could find it, Countess, but five minutes of surfing listicles on "the erasure of asexuality and how you can be an ally" and suchlike wore me down and I gave up.

Honestly that site is such a pit of ridiculousness, which would be fine except it's a pit of ridiculousness which is dedicated to telling women (all women, whatever their race or sexuality) how they are Doing Feminism Wrong and how they can abject themselves to serve the patriarchy better.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/11/2015 10:31

Wtf, Annie? Shock

ArcheryAnnie · 18/11/2015 09:48

Eh, everydayfeminism is barely one step above parody, and has been for a while. This is the website that characterises having a partner of a different race as you as "problematic".

Wonder where I've heard that sentiment before, huh?

ChunkyPickle · 18/11/2015 09:19

I've said on the other thread - but it's pics of you as a baby - as in, not wanting to show that you are a transwoman now, because once you were a boy.

I also said on that other thread, that in my baby/toddler pics you'd be hard pressed to tell me from my DSes, because in the 70s we all wore very similar stuff (mothercare dungarees or nothing but a nappy and wellies if my pics are anything to go by).

And as to adult clothes, just go in whatever department you like and buy what fits! The separation between Mens and Women's clothes (apart from fit) is totally made up buy society, buy your jeans from whatever section you like. I'm a short, fat woman, and I'm currently wearing women's jeans and bra, but mens boxers and hoodie because they're comfortable, and it doesn't matter. It only matters if you have a point to prove.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 18/11/2015 09:18

Boy and girl when referring to babies just means male or female.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 18/11/2015 08:35

If anything it made me want to be more "cissexist".....

I give this fashion another 15 years before it trickles away back in to the shadows again, leaving behind a trail of people having therapy because they were encouraged to mutilate their bodies at an age where they were still growing in to them.......

LittleBearPad · 18/11/2015 00:43

What an irritating article to read. I gave up on it for many reasons.

LineyReborn · 18/11/2015 00:27

I need it in words of one syllable, Elendon. It's been a funny old night. And I do like your posts on MN.

LineyReborn · 18/11/2015 00:24

I know. Am I missing something? Have I had a late night irony by-pass?

Elendon · 18/11/2015 00:16

Boy or girl is gender. Male or female is sex.

LineyReborn · 18/11/2015 00:08

Well they might know the sex...

I'm still working on my gender characteristics and I'm 53.

Elendon · 18/11/2015 00:02

Asking is it a boy or a girl? So last century maaaannn!

Because most people now know the gender and name the baby before it's born.
