Rape and coercion

I'm trying to think something through and I'd greatly appreciate some help!

My DP and I were discussing a well known game franchise that he plays. I haven't played it myself so only know the story second hand, if you see what I mean.

Essentially, Character A and Character B are kidnapped by the Bad Guys. The Bad Guy tells A that he has a choice; either A can rape B or he (Bad Guy) will. This is basically a means of torture, in that A must decide wether to take the 'kinder' option of doing it or allowing the Bad Guy to do it (probably with added violence)

To me, A is still a rapist and - though in a shit position - is still morally wrong (if you see what I mean)

DP disagrees. I would be interested in your thoughts, Should you care to share them Smile

Or just ask him what if "person" B was wearing a big anorak like real people A & C and not wearing "fuck me" leggings and a bra, for better access to her squeezable bazongas.

Hmm

Jeez. My dh used to play the earlier iterations of Metal Gear Solid. I'm glad he's made no mention of getting this one, because if I saw him enjoying a game like that, which effectively justifies rape albeit 'in some circumstances' I would be furious. I wouldn't have it in the house tbh. I'm sickened that such a game has been released, and that people anywhere are prepared to play it.

I don't know about the law, and I'm not all that interested since the law and its enforcement has historically been so shit for women. In terms of morality, you need to remember the concept of individual responsibility. If someone rapes someone else then they are a rapist, it's that simple. Yes there may have been immense pressure to do it. There's always some excuse. If you accept pressure as an excuse then you theoretically accept teenagers harassing women because peer pressure says they should.

Was there really no other option - could A and B not gang up together on this person in some way?

Even if not, yes sometimes you have to do shit things, it doesn't make them any less shit. And I totally agree with the others who said that making the woman 'help the man through it' is worse than sickening. Perhaps she enjoyed it really?? I need a vomiting emoticon.

He said that gender wouldn't make a difference, when a PP asked. I will check about elderly/child/relative when I get home tonight. I suspect it will make a difference, though I couldn't say why.

She's called "quiet"?!!

Vampyre, ask him what his response is if person b is male, is elderly or a child, or is the mother of person a. I'd be really genuinrely interested to hear what he says

VampyreQueen · 10/08/2015 07:04

As much as I agree that the rape scenario (and wider game) come from a place that's full of rape myths and dis respect to women, I did want to reiterate that the player (Dp ) doesn't commit the rape themselves. If Dp were playing a game where he himself was 'forced' to commit rape, I think I'd be LTB.
Another character does it and the rape is not actually shown. It doesn't make it ok, but at least it isn't graphic.

I don't even have anything else to say, just... WTF. Actually speechless, at all of it.

BertieBotts · 10/08/2015 00:51

Jesus Christ.

BathtimeFunkster · 10/08/2015 00:35

I wonder if it's because he feels like a criticism of the game Is a criticism of him? E.g., if this game is sexist/misogynistic than I (as a fan of this game) must also be sexist/misogynistic. Since I am not, the game can't be either.

If he plays that game, and thinks a man is a victim of rape if he rapes a woman as a favour to her to stop her being "bad" raped, and thinks the woman should be grateful for his sacrifice and help him through his pain, then he is a sexist, misogynist, rape apologist.

Fucking creepy bastard playing rape fantasy games.

superhat · 10/08/2015 00:04

LOL @ Heroin. I obviously meant Heroine in my previous posts Grin

superhat · 09/08/2015 23:41

@YonicScrewdriver It puts the rape scene in context once you take into consideration the wider game. Clearly it's a game made by people (men I'm guessing) who don't respect women in general. If they did they wouldn't design the main Heroin (who is called "Quiet") to look like a stripper.

YonicScrewdriver · 09/08/2015 22:50

Super, thanks for posting the extra stuff on the game. I now loathe this game even more.

DS1 is going to be outgrowing Minion Rush at some point - I need to find some other innocuous games for him.

minkGrundy · 09/08/2015 22:02

Some of the dilemma seems to stem from the old idea that rape is at least partly wrong because it harms the male owners of the victim. So raping B is seen as equally bad for A because he likes her, making him equally a victim.

This is what I was trying but failing to articulate last night.

And I think I made it absolutely clear I thought the scenario is abhorrent and therefore by extension so is the game and most importantly the people who profit from making up this stuff are gits. So I don't why we are being accused of being blase about this.

Correction - *moral stance on rape

superhat · 09/08/2015 21:36

I don't believe that a game that designs it main female heroin as a sex object and releases a sex doll with squeezable breasts can be trusted regarding its morale stance on rape. The rape part is probably in the game for pure perverted titillation.

The guy in the video that I posted is the market that game is aimed at and he didn't exactly come across well.

YonicScrewdriver · 09/08/2015 21:25

Thanks, Just, I didn't know that. I could see how perhaps another person's view of the impact might add something (eg X has been too scared to go to the shops alone since the mugging) if it was something the victim was reluctant to say about themselves.

superhat · 09/08/2015 21:24

Yes @JustTheRightBullets the game is 100% sexist! I just did some more googling and it turns out that the creators actually released an "Action figure" of the main female character complete with..."soft squeezable breasts". The mind boggles.

Video about action figure:

Lurkedforever1 · 09/08/2015 21:00

After seeing the pics I think the game is using rape as an explantation for a mutually consensual 'fuck the mate/ colleague you've always fancied without social repercussions' type of scenario. Which is so utterly wrong in every way.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 09/08/2015 20:51

Ffs @ pictures.

And yes @ game player being invited to put themselves in "terrible quandary" of person a. Pp are right that from person b perspective the kidnapper might well be the preferred choice. But it's not person b's choice is it.

What lesson are they trying to teach here?

And what would the reaction be if person b was male? I suspect a lot of person a would say I can't, the kidnapper will have to do it. I can't force that on my friend, I couldn't get it up. But when person b is a woman, yup go for it and he's doing her a favour.

So the subtext of this just gets iffier and iffier the more you think about it. And well it was extremely wtaf to start with!

So the game makers have set up a situation telling young men that sometimes it is justifiable to rape a woman, that rape and sex are the same thing (of course he can do it she's hot right? So who wouldn't) in a way that totally would not apply if person b were a man. Or a child? What if person b were his mother or sister. What then? I'm guessing it's a no. Op ask your dh that? And then ask why it's different if person b is female, not related, and of reproductive type age.

I should know better than to read threads about games.

Making a sadface, putting head back in the sand.

Still rape!

superhat · 09/08/2015 19:33

And here's what the main female character looks like:

Notice any differences is how they are dressed?

superhat · 09/08/2015 19:31

Here's what the main male character looks like:

Rape and coercion

Just, your ex wanted to write one about himself? Not his observations of the impact on you?

Blimey!
