Thanking my feminist sisters

Excuse the 1970s title, but I do want to say thanks. Thanks

I get the feeling FWR is a bit under a cloud at the moment, but I've had so much good advice and support here, and I don't remember to say thanks often enough. I was chatting to some RL friends today and realising that I have a lot of affection for proper, old style feminism where we do use terms like 'women's liberation' and 'patriarchy' and, yes, sisterhood. And there aren't so very much places you can talk about feminism the way we can here.

So, thank you very much, sisters. Smile

Not you of course, TheLily! Grin

IrenetheQuaint · 23/05/2015 18:55

Good thread. Even as an occasional poster/lurker on FWR I have learnt so much. And had a lot of fun too.

TheVermiciousKnid · 23/05/2015 18:55

You know, the one thing that's not so good about FWR is the occasional appearance of those ^ kind of pathetic, sad fuckwits.

TheLily1957 · 23/05/2015 18:55

Mostly lurk. Occasionally post. Learned alot, most especially that I am not alone in my views and experience of patriarchy. Heres to sisterhood. Wine and thanks to allFlowers

It's great to read all these posts, so many things resonate, thank you for the thread.

I mostly lurk on FWR, I have learned a lot, and I have changed my mind on many issues.

Thanks to the many who share their knowledge and time, it is truly appreciated. I value all the many contributors and points of view.

SunsetsAndStarlings · 23/05/2015 18:20

I stand with all of you. I have been around for five years or so, but don't post much at all. I just like to read and learn. I can't describe to you all the changes that have taken place inside my mind since I discovered this place. It really has been an awakening for me. Thanks to you all.

alexpolistigers · 23/05/2015 18:19

Such a good thread idea, Jeanne.

You are right, we do often forget to say thanks.

I have learnt a lof from this board. I, like others, have read far more than I have posted. There has been everything here, from the frivolous to the serious to the tragic to the sad. It is a good mix.

My life has been immeasurably enriched. Hurrah for feminism!

OrlandoWoolf · 23/05/2015 18:12

I've posted on FWR for ages. It's been educational and has really helped me see other points of view. I won't lie - there are times when it's been really really hard posting on here and I do hide threads when I've become over invested in them. There are threads where I want to say something and contribute - but I won't given past experiences. Like any other board, it can be hard when you're posting a different view as some people get very passionate about things.

I also think that the nature of such conversations mean that tone can be difficult to interpret and sometimes people can jump to conclusions about people when they say things that are open to interpretation - in RL, that probably wouldn't happen as much as you'd probably not be having that conversation.

But it has been interesting and useful. I've learnt a lot, listened to a lot of people, listened and understood different perspectives - and hopefully offered an insight into my world as well.

DS has also learnt a lot. We discuss sexism a lot and he is very aware of issues.

Heckler · 23/05/2015 17:20

I don't have a sister in real life, but the regulars here now feel like my sistes. I don't think people realise the amount of support you can get in this topic - it all seems about putting FWR down.

I have learnt so much here, been supported, had giggles and shit, made angry, and sad.

I love you all Grin

RockCrushesLizard · 23/05/2015 17:01

I'm another lurker.
I was one of those millennial young women who isn't a feminist because I wasn't (insert hairy legged man hating trope here). As time passed I started disliking the sexism that was plainly still rampant, and found myself picking up my husband and colleagues up on casual sexism. Then I started reading here, and realised, through the fabulous, informed and intelligent women here that I am so a Feminist, albeit an unread one.

I've realised that I am a cliche of consciousness raising - most recently when I was annoyed at the portrayal of Skyler in Breaking Bad, then annoyed that I couldn't just enjoy the series, then annoyed that all the series have crap women.

Today I found myself explaining to my toddler that I was putting make up on because society unfairly values women who look good, (not mentioning that I fear losing the privilege of looking good with my slap on).

I know that lots of the regulars on here devote their time and mental energy into their posts, and engage with people like me who must seem like the most naive feminism 101 students. Even though it must be boring and repetitive. But it really helps. So thank you, for myself and for my daughter. Flowers

AnyFucker · 23/05/2015 16:22

yay, sisters Thanks

DarrellRiversGlintingEye · 23/05/2015 16:18

I genuinely don't think I would have become interested in feminism were it not for the FWR boards. I started lurking here in my first year of university, and went from knowing nothing about feminism other than it was an annoying way of analysing books that I didn't really care about to finding myself nodding along with Dittany's posts. A very fast baptism of fire! I've learnt a lot, even if I rarely post, and I find it so refreshing to find a place that is (for the most part) just female voices. As a more radical-leaning feminist, coming here (away from student feminist circles) is a bit of fresh air Grin

VampyreQueen · 23/05/2015 16:15

I love to lurk and absorb information even if I am too slow to respond Grin A huge thank you to all of the intelligent, witty women who make this board so fabulous Smile Thanks

partialderivative · 23/05/2015 15:03

I've lurked and posted.

Many times I have had my head bitten off.

But I have learnt a heck of a lot from this thread, I know I may be disliked by many on here, but I do take notice and I have had my notions seriously challenged.

I have a lot to thank this thread for .

RufusTheReindeer · 23/05/2015 14:31

Agree with everyone else

I lurk but I've learnt a lot

Arcady · 23/05/2015 11:25

I've been a lurker on FWR for a long time and it's really helped me to think about feminism and clarify my ideas. When I was a student I read a lot of feminist books and got very angry, and then when my career took over I didn't think so much about feminism, but now I'm thinking about it more and getting angry again. It's probably not good for my blood pressure but I can't un-see all the sexism around me anymore and it's great to have a place where I can read the thoughts of other women with similar (and sometimes different) ideas to me. It makes me feel better and helps me to think about the issues. It's definitely helped me to understand feminism better.

Lurking here gave me the confidence to challenge everyday sexism in my workplace. I don't know if I've changed much but every voice counts, right? Smile
Thanks, sisters.

TheVermiciousKnid · 23/05/2015 11:09

Yes, seeing that interest in feminism from teenagers is great. And my daughter certainly doesn't hold back with her opinions! What has made a big difference for her (apart from my corrupting influence Wink) is being in an all girls school now. She is very outspoken even at school. If, for example, a teacher uses an even slightly sexist example (like the male pronoun as default) she, and other girls, will say something. I doubt that would have happened at a mixed school.

magimedi · 23/05/2015 11:09

Have been a feminist for over 40 years & soemwhat 'lapsed' in interest & felt so bloody weary with all the same old, same old battles & crap.

The FWR boards here have rejuvenated me.

Thank you.

shaska · 23/05/2015 11:02

Reading and posting here has been hugely educational for me, even in the short time I've been here. It makes me really happy that there are so many smart, thoughtful, interesting and funny people talking about feminism in all its many variants. Thanks everyone!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 23/05/2015 10:41

Not off topic at all.

If you'd told me, even five years ago, that feminism would be becoming so mainstream with people in their teens/early 20s, I would have been quite surprised. I love it.

I'm also mostly a lurker, but I do love this part of MN. :) And yes, like others, I have learned a lot, even though I can't remember a time when I haven't identified as a feminist.

Slightly off topic, but something else that I find really encouraging, and gives me hope for the future, is seeing how my daughter (15) and some of her friends are developing a strong interest in feminism. We have some wonderful discussions. :)

JeanneDeMontbaston · 23/05/2015 10:05

Probably true, upto.

If I'm using emoji can I be down with the kids, even if I also use 'sisters'?
