NUS and prostitution - confused...

They seem to haves passed a motion which holds anyone who thinks the Nordic model of managing prostitution is the preserve of right wing radical feminists.

I'm confused. I don't know much about sex work but I do know it is linked to trafficking of women and children and organised crime. I would be delighted if men were criminalised - but maybe I'm wrong?

Here's the motion but you might not be able to view it...

Exactly, Chopper. This person has decided what they think is going on, and no amout of evidence otherwise will make them change their mind.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:26

I'm questioning your ability to listen to those who work in prostitution given how much you're failing to listen to posters here telling you when you are wrong about what they think.

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:22

I support the shaming of people convicted of crimes such as trafficking, rape, exploitation of minors etc

I do not support the shaming of adults engaging in consensual paid-for-sex in their own privacy.

I notice that you didn't address my point about selling sex not being like any other job.

"I notice that you didn't address my point about selling sex not being like any other job."

I agree with the NUS- it is like any other job- labour for money- except (largely thanks to the likes of yourselves and also the extremist religious folks who get angry when unmarried people have sex) it is highly stigmatised.

lazocutor wrote - "Do you agree with publicly shaming those who choose to sell sex?"

I don't agree with public shaming of people who sell sex, irrespective of whether they say that they choose it, or not.

Do you agree with shaming of people who sell sex? Although you gave the example, so far I haven't seen you explicitly state that you opposed this. I don't want to make assumptions about your attitude to shaming women.

I notice that you didn't address my point about selling sex not being like any other job.

"I think it's safe to say you are an idiot. This post is contrary to MN policy on personal attacks so feel free to ask for it to be deleted."

Any spot the hypocrisy here?

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:16

IMO, this actually harms RG's credibility

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:15

@StillLostAtTheStation the responses for the RG public consultation have now been taken down but I can assure you most were along the lines of "prostitution is against god's law" and "I agree with the proposal and sex should only be between a married man and woman".

Rhoda Grant got most of her support for her nordic model proposal from Christians. That's obvious.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:12

Isn't it strange Annie? We're being told all these things we supposedly believe, and yet no amount of saying that we don't believe them will convince our new poster. It's almost as though they're not here to properly engage in discussion.

StillLostAtTheStation · 28/03/2015 17:11

I think it's safe to say most of the people who supported Rhoda Grant would probably also support her if her proposal was to criminalise fornification or homosexuality

ArcheryAnnie · 28/03/2015 17:10

Then you'd bet wrong, lazocutor. I find it amazingly possible to disagree with another woman without feeling the need to shame them.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:10

""When you find a feminist on MN advocating the public shaming of any woman for being paid for sex (or sex she wasn't paid for), let me know"

I bet you would advocate the public shaming of prostitutes who are consenting and who don't support the "nordic model"?"

Of course I wouldn' advocate that. Why would I?

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:09

"Unfortunately I have to walk past them. "

You have to walk past them? Oh the horror! You poor baby!

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:09

What might stop someone in prostitution taking part in a political process I wonder? What might enable someone in prostitution to take part in a political process?

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:09

StillLostAtTheStation · 28/03/2015 17:08

Unfortunately I have to walk past them.

Although your comment completely fails to understand my point.

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:07

" I was clarifying because your use of "sex worker" "

Well to clarify if I say sexworker I'm referring to a prostitute.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/03/2015 17:07

lazocutor I don't know any feminists who would out a woman working in prostitution. If the Sunday World did that, then take it up with them. Nobody here did it.

I like toast. It's very possible Boris Johnson likes toast. The fact we both like toast does not turn us into bosom buddies who agree on everything else. Your desperate attempt to paint feminists as somehow hand-in-glove with right-wing tabloids is going nowhere.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:07

When you find a feminist on MN advocating the public shaming of any woman for being paid for sex (or sex she wasn't paid for), let me know

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:06

"As it is Ms Grant consulted and researched widely before submitting her bill."

And during the public consultation only 3 current or former prostitutes wrote in in support. Along with several dozen people who attended church (it was really obvious RG had contacted several churches about the proposal because she knew she would get support from Christians).

I think it's safe to say most of the people who supported Rhoda Grant would probably also support her if her proposal was to criminalise fornification or homosexuality.

StillLostAtTheStation · 28/03/2015 17:05

Sorry meant to add ,keep trying, I'm not any of those either.

ChopperGordino · 28/03/2015 17:04

Did I say they did outrd a pimp? I was clarifying because your use of "sex worker" could have included pimps

StillLostAtTheStation · 28/03/2015 17:04

Not radical feminsts or extremist Christians or people who know nothing other than what biased tabloids with agendas tell them.

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:03

" It offends me greatly that there are 2 strip clubs in Edinburgh city centre less than 5 minutes from the castle. "

Then don't visit them?

lazocutor · 28/03/2015 17:02

"Pimps I don't care about."

They didn't out a pimp. They outed a woman who sells sex and put the video on youtube, which showed her face, her address and enough info to allow people to track down her online profile. She changed her online profile name etc but I was still able to track it down. I let the agency know about the outing just to make sure they knew and in their reply they said they were very concerned about the risk to the woman's safety the Sunday World had caused.

Lyonesse · 28/03/2015 17:01

It never fails to astound me how vehement men are in defending their right to pay to rape a woman.
