Because, dear, there's an acronym list for this website that's been established for 15 years. Y'know, since before you were born. So stick with the local traditions, hmm?

willkeaveney62417 · 23/03/2015 14:49

@wickedlazy I assumed the second paragraph followed the opening paragraph on your previous comment.

Why should it not mean dear sir?

@buffy Are you implying that is impossible for a woman calling herself a feminist to degrade herself?

@uglyswan Thanks for the references thats quite a list.

I'd like to add Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine and the Equality Illusion by Kat Banyard to the list.

EBearhug · 23/03/2015 14:20

And what has 50 shades of grey got to do with feminism?

You've missed all the commentary among feminists and also in the BDSM community about it not actually being consenting, then.

AskBasil · 23/03/2015 14:12

Can I add Wifework to that list please uglyswan.

"Surely it's about two consenting adults who engage in bdsm, one of whom may have mental health issues, and the other who began to see the bdsm as bordering on abuse and left the relationship."

No, it's not bdsm, it's abuse. BDSM-ers have been very clear about that.

"Sex positive feminism can empower a woman to hysteric highs"

Really, genuinely, need some explanation of this. Deeply curious on many levels.

Righty ho, OP, here's an introductory reading list for you:
Simone de Beauvoir - Le Deuxième Sexe
Susan Faludi - Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women
Bell Hooks - Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center
Judith Butler - Gender Trouble
Nancy Chodorow - The Reproduction of Mothering
Kate Millet - Sexual Politics
Shulamith Firestone -The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution

There will be a two hour written exam on all of these books following which you will be expected to submit five written pages on either: a) the history of the women's movement in Western Europe from the late 18th to early 20th century, b) feminist critiques of philosophy, literary theory and psychoanalysis or c) feminism as a political movement in late capitalism.

Depending on how well you score, we will be happy to answer one or two of your questions on the subject.

Good luck!

Surely it's about two consenting adults who engage in bdsm, one of whom may have mental health issues, and the other who began to see the bdsm as bordering on abuse and left the relationship. Grey is the way he is because he was abused by a woman who engaged him in bdsm practices when he was a teenager? Confused

About once a week (quite often correlated with when the pubs close) I get this awful sense of deja vu. So tedious.

SunshineBossaNova · 23/03/2015 13:29

I saw 50SOG. It was utter bobbins.

wickedlazy · 23/03/2015 13:23

What is ds? And by the sound of it there it could be argued that you don't qualify as a housewife because you're too slavey ;) for not expecting anything from your husband Ds is the slang often used on this site to mean darling son. Darling son is used to mean son, even if they aren't a little darling.

He is my dp (darling partner) not my husband. And I expect a lot if things from him. Just not help with the housework when he has been at work all day and I have been at home all day. But as I said, this is the point where I often seem to "disqualify" Confused.

Oh and thank you buffy Grin

That's not the point of this parenting forum, Will.

How do you think 50SOG shapes feminist discourse?

@Buffy No that did not help. Your comment cancels itself out. The whole point of a messageboard is to become acquainted with new belief systems at an entirely different pace than what is possible with reading published material.

If you don't think my comments provide enough of a starting point for you, then suggest whatever reading material you represents you.

How does 50 Shades of Grey shaped feminist discourse?

I don't think it's a coincidence this thread started just after the college bar closed, is it will? Grin Write your own essay!

Oh, if only that were true...

ChopperGordino · 23/03/2015 12:33

what do you think fayyive?

fayyive · 23/03/2015 12:31

Would that also apply to prostitution? Would you need to have experience paying for sex before you can judge it?

EBearhug · 23/03/2015 12:28

How can you judge something like 50 Shades without seeing it? I can on hear, but I wouldn't if I were reviewing it for an academic paper or the like - some feminists have to see it, if only to tell others why they shouldn't. Likewise with porn - you can accept what Gail Dines says about it, but she became an expert on the subject by having to watch an awful lot of it. You have to know your enemy, so some feminists have to consume the bad media, so it can be criticised with knowledge, and so the rest of us can choose not to.

ChopperGordino · 23/03/2015 12:21

fayyive · 23/03/2015 12:18

What about a feminist who goes to see 50 shades of grey? Would paying to see such a movie (thus increasing the demand for it) be anti-feminist?

ApocalypseThen · 23/03/2015 10:29

Well, despite not really getting what the OP is thinking of and what the agenda is (and it's clear there is an agenda), I would say that procuring or allowing FGM in a western country would be an action which would leave me wondering whether you could ever really be considered a feminist since the purpose is to permanently attack women's comfort and sexuality in order to conform to extreme patriarchy.

uglyswan · 23/03/2015 10:07

"Sex positive feminism can empower a woman to hysteric highs, but as an individual." OP, did you run this back on forth through google translate before posting? Or are you a bot?

Ubik1 · 23/03/2015 09:18

Dunno

I let DP do the plastering yesterday while I did the washing
