The greens and prostitutes

Be gentle as I am new to thinking about this.

I found the Natalie Bennett's comments on decriminalising prostitution pretty persuasive - what am I missing?

She basically said that sex workers would like this policy (having contributed to it) and that research from other countries indicated it was the way forward.

As purchasing power over another.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 09/03/2015 17:28

Mary, for some prostitutes and their punters, no doubt it is like hiring a plumber - Kim seems to take this kind of attitude.

For many, though, it's about buying power.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/03/2015 17:23

Precisely what does that have to do with Greens policy? Nothing. And the links... omg!

As Petula says....

No one has a right to sex, no matter their sex drive or lack thereof.

You sound like one of those idiots who states that if men can't use prostituted women, then either they'll start raping random women, or their balls will explode. Both of which have been said in all seriousness.

FloraFox · 09/03/2015 17:18

mary24go why are you saying "we" and "our"? You don't know if men's sex drive is different than mine. Also, men post on MN too. I find faux-group speak odd.

Even if men have a higher sex drive than women, so what? That's no justification for having sex on someone who doesn't want it.

PetulaGordino · 09/03/2015 17:10

Sex drive is entirely irrelevant to this discussion. No one has a right to sex.

rivetingrosie

  1. Point one about what you feel is good sex is only relevant to you.
  1. Mens sex drive is different to ours and to be honest when i hire a plumber, carpenter or bricklayer i am hiring them for a specific task and i expect it is the same for hiring a sex worker.
  1. It is not a fallacy and women do buy sex we just do it less than men do, mens sex drives have far less to do with socialization than ours does.

If you try to solve the problem based on flawed data it will fail miserably.

I thought I'd take advantage of the slight derailment and post something my friend sent me - food for thought and quite empowering I thought!

IceBeing · 09/03/2015 15:58

hmm patriarchy deniers might be better...or maybe just confusing...

Just finished reading 'The female man'. My first feminist book. I may never recover!

My favourite quote was:

"I have never been to the moon".

IceBeing · 09/03/2015 15:55

what about sexism deniers....like holocaust deniers...only for sexism.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 09/03/2015 15:43

Hi all

The use of it by others doesn't jar - I just try and avoid it myself.

"Traitor" could work in some situations, Rosie, for those verbally abusing rape victims or similar.

Anyway, did not intend to derail the thread!

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/03/2015 15:33

I wouldn't bandy the term handmaiden about liberally.

However, if the boots fit, there are women who just need to lace hem up and get walking. It's a gendered expression for shitty gendered behaviour.

BreakingDad77 · 09/03/2015 15:19

Female patriachists - Fempats?

I'd tend to use "handmaiden" for the sort of woman who goes on about how feminists are just ugly women who can't get a man. I also quite like "manpleaser". The "cool girl" feminists are handmaidens and manpleasers in denial.

I see what you mean AKnickerful, but it is a gendered phenomenon so it kinda needs to be described in a gendered way. Collaborator doesn't quite work because we all collaborate with the patriarchy to some extent in order to survive. It's those women who actively work against the interests of women who need a descriptor. How about 'traitor'?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 09/03/2015 13:59

Otherwise - collaborator? Misogynist? Servant of the patriarchy?

I understand where the word is coming from, I just prefer not to use a gendered word to describe the behaviour.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 09/03/2015 13:58

One woman in particular is skid-mark personified.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 09/03/2015 13:55

That woman is a skid mark?

Personally don't use handmaiden, any more than I would use "patriarchy's bitch" or similar

Personally I had never heard of the term until I saw it being used on MN , both on this part of the forum and AIBU.
