Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Men who parade how "feminist" they are but who can fuck right off...

...as they don't actually want to listen to women who disagree with them in any way.

I am not including common-or-garden arseholes here, as the list would be a billion posts long and the internet would explode. I am talking about the kind of man who writes a long, handwringing article in the Guardian about how we should all listen to feminists more, but then deletes most of the comments from actual feminists that are posted on it.

The two currently at the top of my very long List are:
Ally Fogg
Owen Jones

Nominations, please.

Scepticism can lead a person to question and reject old ideas. Scepticism can also lead a person to question and reject new ideas. I get the impression that the scepticism of Myers has led him to question and reject old biology in favour of recent transactivist ideas of female penis and male vagina. I think this may explain why he then negatively criticised feminists who don't agree with him and transactivists.

Last I heard, Myers is a specialist in the study of fish and other marine creatures, such as cuttle fish, squid and octopuses. Has his awareness of hermaphroditism in marine creatures led him to make one too many extrapolations onto the biology of humans?

I think all of the feminism on freethought blogs is liberal feminism. Possibly because it's do connected with atheism, and the atheists hate the ladies with the same passion as every religion. They just don't realise it.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 03/04/2015 11:58

I saw that, just thought ugh.

ArcheryAnnie · 03/04/2015 11:55

I've got another one for The List! PZ Myers, biologist, "freethought" blogger and prominent skeptic. Thinks himself very much one of the good guys. Posted this today on twitter:

"What’s with all these TERFs nattering at me?"

So, in eight words managed two gendered slurs! Because there's nothing worse than women "nattering", amiright?

Well done, PZ. You made The List.

We've got to remember though, that we only get respect and support if we are the right kind of women. Similar to that narrow line between 'slut' and 'frigid' except this is the line between wanting rights/respect/freedom from oppression and wanting too many rights/too much respect/too much freedom from men. He, of course, gets to dictate that line we must walk down.

ArcheryAnnie · 02/04/2015 21:48

Owen has got more than a thousand retweets of his tweet "Why we desperately need women to dominate politics - basically that’s what’s come out of #leadersdebate"

Christ, what a steaming hypocrite he is.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 01/04/2015 21:20

Or Everyday Feminism, another 'source' he cites over and over again.

If he wants to defer to feminists like Laurie Penny rather than justify his own published opinions, he should give his space in the Guardian over to her.

ArcheryAnnie · 01/04/2015 21:13

Christ, Puffins, that really is telling (and annoying). Women aren't people so any activism they do can safely be ignored and discounted. In Owen's world we are whatever he decrees we are, whatever our lives and experiences.

Lyonesse · 01/04/2015 20:54

It's ok though, he 'defers to feminists like Laurie Penny'. Is she some sort of stamp of feminist approval?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 01/04/2015 19:53

Yup. Pretty much.

YonicScrewdriver · 01/04/2015 19:51

Oh, has he redefined homophobe to mean "person who doesn't like Owen Jones"?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 01/04/2015 19:13

I made a comment about him, which didn't @ him and he tweeted me back to tell me I was a homophobe.

Me, the one who marched against Clause28 before he was a twinkle in his daddy's eye, I am a homophobe, because the misogynist child said I was.

This made me rather angry yesterday.

grimbletart · 01/04/2015 17:48

Owen Jones really is a dreadful brat.

Cariad007 · 01/04/2015 16:06

Sadly Owen Jones doesn't really give a shit about women or feminism. He only gives a shit about owenjonesism. End of.

almondcakes · 01/04/2015 16:00

Owen Jones has gone through a series of phases on feminism:

a. men must stand up for feminism.
b. men must stand up only for liberal feminism.
c. liberal feminism should be used by him, a man, to defend individual male authority figures who watch heterosexual porn.
d. women should not talk about their own experiences because liberal feminist discussion is being had by a man about men and is no longer about women at all.

ArcheryAnnie · 01/04/2015 15:34

Well, indeed, Yonic. I think it was just Owen looking for a "gotcha", trying to yet again claim that women talking about violence against women are being homophobic. How dare women talk about women in porn when gay porn exists, too! Despite the fact that we are talking about het porn, not gay male porn! What about the menz?

OP posts:
YonicScrewdriver · 01/04/2015 15:24

I don't even understand that, Annie,

ArcheryAnnie · 01/04/2015 15:04

According to Owen, women who discuss the misogyny of het porn with him are "Literally erasing millions of gay men out of existence".

"Literally erasing millions of gay men out of existence."

"LITERALLY ERASING MILLIONS OF GAY MEN OUT OF EXISTENCE."

"LITERALLY...."

I would laugh forever, but this twit has traction and a platform. However, this is both the funniest and the worst example of "WHAT ABOUT THE MENZ" I've seen in a while.

Well done Owen!

Cariad007 · 31/03/2015 20:43

Owen's at it again on Twitter, wilfully refusing to listen to women who disagree with him (again) and accusing them of homophobia while he's at it. Skidmark indeed Angry

PuffinsAreFictitious · 30/03/2015 17:15

Fucking OJ again with his "MPs watch p0rn, but it's all just lads, innit" thing today.

No, you utter skidmark. It's violence against women.

He's really, really gone out to left field on this one.

AskBasil · 27/03/2015 09:01

arandmorgan, of course feminism is having a negative effect on (some) men. It challenges their unearned privilege and tries to level the playing field so that they don't have an automatic advantage in the game of life in comparison to 50% of the human race. People are always uncomfortable with a loss of individual privilege, even when it results in the common good.

OTOH it's having a positive effect on the best examples of their sex. It frees men who would otherwise be trapped in masculine gender roles, to explore their full humanity instead of shutting off much of it as being "unmanly".

scallopsrgreat · 26/03/2015 16:46

Oh the poor men . For centuries they've had privilege and now the meany feminists want to take that away .

But yeah, don't worry about the women who are being subjugated. It's Men who matter.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 26/03/2015 16:23

Yes, sexism is having a negative effect on women. It also has a negative effect on men. Feminism would actually benefit men. Well, most men.

"And what do you mean by "all this feminism"?"

I'm curious about this too.
