This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

(I should say that I have stolen that joke from Jeanne)

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 09:01

Well, we won't get mistaken for an All Bar One with this decor...

LOL Petula.

I'm not sure Brid, I'm assuming in reference to the OP's namechange? Lol at Cromwell as feminist icon. Though if it's a straight choice between Thomases, More said that a boy without a winkle was a girl, so we're definitely not decorating in his honour

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 08:56

Um, no, no feminist iconery. Just fancied a change Grin

Why is the pub decorated in tribute to Flop? Is he a feminist icon? I'm confused...

Artifexmumdi · 08/02/2015 08:08

I know Death in Paradise started out as 3:1 and I was just hoping when it became 2:2 it would stay that way. I'm just disappointed.

But thread has moved on. Hope you feel better Freddie.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 08/02/2015 04:00

green gloop??

I've only just found the dino thread - a thread of joy and terror rolled into one.

now I must try to get some sleep - night kickass

kickassangel · 08/02/2015 03:23

never thought to help myself to a pint late at night when the barstaff aren't looking! how slow am I?

Right, time to go wild. A pint of green gloop it is!

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 08/02/2015 03:18

ooh, it's lovely being online at this hour - everything's so quick Grin

(we live in the boondocks, but super whizzy fibre is being laid along our road AS I TYPE).

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 08/02/2015 03:16

thanks for the recommendation kickass - I've just added it to dd1's kindle, as it sounds just her thing.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 08/02/2015 03:15

Marking place in an empty pub ... (Helps self to pint). I have one of those annoying coughs that wakes you up at 2am, then DH has one of those annoying snores that won't let me get back to sleep Hmm.

Today I am mostly channeling the rage induced by that cock of a barrister - if it is for real it begs so many questions of the standard of our legal system and confirms all my worst suspicions about the privileged male that I feel like crawling under a duvet to hide - but then I'd just have to kick the snoring male beside me, which seems a little unfair, as he's one of the good guys.

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 01:55

That sounds good kickass. Will add it to my ever-expanding list of books for 2016 (2015 book moratorium here - sadly not likely to be effective as it's just deferring everything to next year!)

caroldecker · 08/02/2015 00:55

Death in paradise was always 3:1 until the male sergeant left at the end of the last series. 2:2 was only for a few episodes. A slight bit of good news is the female character has always been 2nd of 4 and not just a love interest.
Having said that, her attire is much more 'beach' than the men

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 07/02/2015 23:14

Oh hai, more wine pls.

I have been mostly channelling Angry Shouty Mum today (threenager), and spent the evening re-doing my CV and writing covering letter. Hate the whole process.

book sounds really good kickass, shall have a look out for it.

Dragonlette · 07/02/2015 22:51

I'll definitely read that Kickass, it sounds great.

I've just finished a very disappointing sci-fi book called 3037, where the author doesn't seem to be able to envision a future that doesn't have very clear gender roles and women being the default parent, even in multiple versions of the future :( I wouldn't recommend it, although the basic plot is fairly reasonable.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 07/02/2015 22:35

Sounds good, kickass!

So - Just Read a book called "Code Name Verity".
Set in WWII.

Two main characters - both female. Both strong, compassionate, brilliant, funny, just about everything you could want. One is a spy and one a pilot. They do come across the sexism of the time (particularly the pilot) and it's part of the plot, but not in any hand-wringing, woe is us, kind of way. It's just part of the plot.

I enjoyed reading it so much that not only did I read it in one evening (OK, I stayed up until 2!) but the whole 'oh, they're pioneering womenz' thought didn't even kick in as it's just a good book to read.

It was recommended by one of the teenagers I teach, and would be great for any reasonably mature, avid reader aged around 12-13 up. They need to be able to deal with a bit of death and torture, but there are no horrific drawn out gruesome bits.

I know it's a small triumph, but so good to see that it IS possible to read that kind of book, and that it engages teenagers. In fact, having chatted about it in school, both boys and girls enjoy reading it, just for the story.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 07/02/2015 22:32

Ow!

Dragonlette · 07/02/2015 22:31

Good evening everybody.

I have a sore back. I twisted awkwardly while I was carrying a big box of exercise books yesterday and now can barely move without wanting to cry :( Still carried on and took dd2 to the zoo because it's cheap entry today, so I've probably made it worse :( Never mind though, we got to see a lovely baby giraffe :)

PuffinsAreFictitious · 07/02/2015 22:29

I'm crap at guessing name changes.

Can I have a butt of malmsey and a surfeit of lampreys please?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 07/02/2015 22:27

Nah, I only changed name today!

WH is on iPlayer if you fancy it, Penguins.
