This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

How is he making the sound? I only know in te context of playing the flute, where more holes closed (generally) means lower notes because of reason 1

Is he dinging them rather than blowing across the top?

OublietteBravo · 26/02/2015 18:45

Google tells me that slower vibrations = lower sounds, and higher vibrations = higher sounds.

It then gives me two conflicting outcomes:

  1. Emptier vessels = lower sounds because of the sound waves moving through the air (more air = slower sound waves).
  2. Emptier vessels = higher sounds because of sound waves moving through the water (more water = slower sound waves).
DS tells me that emptier tubes produce higher sounds, so I suppose answer 2 must be correct.
EBearhug · 26/02/2015 18:29

Google suggests I'm on the right track - there are quite a few hits.

(Obviously you don't have to tell your child you used Google...)

EBearhug · 26/02/2015 18:26

It'll be something to do with how much space there is for sound waves to get reflected, surely?

(No physics since age 14, 2 STEM subject GCSEs and MSc in Computer Science.)

OublietteBravo · 26/02/2015 18:22

Anyone know anything about sound (specifically why different amounts of water in a test tube produces different pitches)? We're trying to help DS (aged 9) with his science homework. DH and I can't answer this question (despite having 9 GCSEs, 7 A-levels, 2 degrees and 2 PhDs between us in STEM subjects Blush)

I went to a job interview with a black eye once. (I had an unplanned meeting with the ledge over the stairs in my childhood home, because I wasn't 10 any more, and didn't gave the same clearance as I had had at that age when swinging down the stairs.) Fortunately, the bloke interviewing me was into rugby, so thought it was entirely normal to show up places with injuries.

OublietteBravo · 26/02/2015 17:46

Oh, and fingers crossed for everyone on the job application/interview front.

OublietteBravo · 26/02/2015 17:44

How is it only Thursday? Surely there can't be another working day before the weekend. I'm feeling wiped out (perhaps I've caught something too). I think I need a medicinal hot toddy.

UptoapointLordCopper · 26/02/2015 17:34

All my bones ache and my ears ache and my throat hurts.

I'm caught something, haven't I? Sad

Came across this rather bizarre advert while at work today.

yes, Annie, it was right above the eye. The bee got caught in my hair and stung me several times. My entire forehead/eye area swelled up .

It was v. romantic and just what every newlywed hopes for.

A bee gave you a black eye? Sorry, I'm giggling at that, though I bet it hurt like crazy!

kickassangel · 26/02/2015 11:40

I got stung by a bee in my temple once and I had a huge black eye as a result. It was our honeymoon! I had to keep artfully arranging my hair over it as we checked in at hotels. Smile

AnnieLobeseder · 26/02/2015 10:58

Wow, INickedAName, that sound amazing!! I'm busy Mumsnetting writing an application for an amazing job this morning so please beam me some of those too-good-to-be-true lucky vibes this way!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 10:56

Shhhh, penguins!

Fingers crossed, INicked. That sounds great.

INickedAName · 26/02/2015 10:50

annie I know exactly what you mean, in my younger days I had a bad fall after a few wines and injured my eye, it was swollen shut for a few days and bruised for a good while and I hated going out because I could feel people looking at me with pity. Those who asked what I'd done didn't believe me when I said I'd fallen. On the other hand my dsis told people her exp had pushed her when explaining a bruise on her arm and people laughed thinking she was joking.

Been watching the latest Jimmy Saville stuff on news and still can't get my head around and feel angry at how he was able to get away with so much.

I've just downloaded the suffragette programme to watch this afternoon and I'm waiting for a phone all about a job. Phone all yesterday was really positive and the manager has said that I'd be able to work within school hours and take unpaid leave during or reduce hours during school holidays if I can't find suitable childcare. They also said they would support me finishing my foundation degree and like that I've been out of the workplace for a while as it means I'm starting with a blank slate. It sounds way to good to be true so I'm not getting my hopes up too much but just the initial phone call yesterday has boosted my confidence massively.

Henry VIII + wives is perhaps a good way of introducing the idea - to children or anyone really - of 'woman as vessel/non-person' ...

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:58

Henry VIII. Why autocorrect, why?

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:57

Even I know what happens to Anne, and as previously mentioned my historical knowledge is woeful (to the extent that I was out of uni before I twigged the link between Henry VII and Elizabeth I Blush. I blame the National Curriculm. I spent the entire time learning about the Troubles, or the history of medicine or similar areas that make no sense without a more general understanding)

JeanneDeMontbaston · 26/02/2015 09:55

Oh, sure, I know there are spoilers like that. But I am actively trying to repress my knowledge of what happens to Anne, and to Cromwell. Grin

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 26/02/2015 09:52

Ah Knickerful, yes, that kind of spoiler. I more meant the 'who dies, who lives, are there babies' type spoilers.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 26/02/2015 09:43

I was very careful not to include spoilers, but I think we all know it doesn't end well for Anne Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 26/02/2015 09:26

Just marking my place again. I keep falling off and I like lurking.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 26/02/2015 09:24

They are spoilers! For example - how "naive" does the programme paint Jane Seymour is interpretation ...
