This is the 17th incarnation of the Feminist Pub!

Here be goats, cannons and chat on feminism and related themes. Also snacks. And booze, copious booze.

Welcome!

My family doesn't do cards. Even for birthdays a short email to say happy birthday is deemed adequate for all concerned. We are very relaxed about this, for some reason. Not sure what we are uptight about. There must be something... Hmm

I used to get ones with no inscription and then write my own thing.

Part of me is glad I don't have to deal with it any more. Part of me isn't.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 23:35

I usually buy one that says "happy Mothering Sunday" and leaves it at that ( due to hatred of the twee rather than awful mother, again luckily)

Mothers day is always tough. Trying to find a card that isn't a big fat lie to send to my mother is hard. They all wiffle on about how great the mother is, and what fabulous friends we are. And she wasn't/isn't and we aren't.

Meh.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 23:27

My dad is luckily great, but let's not ignore the fact that many people have a miserable time at the hands of their families.

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 16/03/2015 22:40

Indeed. I can't think of any man who has hurt me more than my dad. He has pretty much ignored me for the past, ooh, 26 years now.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2015 22:12

It wasn't even the fact it was twee so much (although that's annoying too) - it was the total and utter obliviousness of the fact that my dad is, well, not a great dad.

DoctorTwo · 16/03/2015 21:21

Hurrah Annie!

I've been doing my temp job ferrying people between sites for about 3 months now and one of the women swore for the first time in my presence on Friday. I pointed it out and she apologised so I said "why the fuck are you apologising? Don't do that, just spit it out". Today she swore again. And apologised again. And justified her apology by saying swearing isn't ladylike. I'm not embarrassed to say my rant about 'ladylike' was filled with swears. She is from one of the Baltic states and is used to being a lady. Hmm Acting like one, I mean, so as not to offend us delicate flowers.

This job is supposed to end this month and I'll be sad to see it go because of some of the people. The aforementioned woman, the Polish woman who has no problem with swearing and is possibly more potty mouthed than me, the Pakistani chap who talks about cricket and how hard it is to find a job as a non European immigrant, the female department managers who sometimes have crises of confidence (I always ask if the men would suffer the same way. Apparently they wouldn't). The female heads of department are good and the men who work for them admit it. The job is easy and I love it. Good job really, it's an hour each way and split shifts and I'm knackered by Wednesday but hey! I'm qualified to do nowt so...

Puffin Someone hates the twee parenting memes. It might be an AIBU thread.

Haven't watched much Buffy.

I saw a vampire movie where the women vampires complained about not being able to see their images in the mirror and how difficult it made (un)life. Grin

SoMuchForSubtlety · 16/03/2015 20:44

Fish definitely do not have the right to go uneaten, that would ignore all sorts of food chain realities. I'm I favour of not cramming them into teeny farm pens though, they taste sad.

BUT on a less worthy note - I thought the whole vampire revival thing was entirely and wholly about the hot vampires? No?

Fair enough then.

I would so totally want to objectify him in a really unfeminist fashion

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 20:39

Nope.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/03/2015 20:38

Is James Marsters not in Season 1 then?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 20:37

Haven't seen Supernatural, Bertie.

Buffy has hot vampires. Not in season 1, though Wink

What twee bollocks Copper?

BertieBotts · 16/03/2015 20:36

Ha :) I'm not really into the whole mythology thing. But I want to watch it because 90s, because feminism, because everyone seems to love it.

I can put up with Supernatural because of the hot male leads Blush which is very shallow of me, but I am actually getting invested in the storyline because I am interested in the characters. (I'm only on Season 4 though so don't spoil me!)

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 16/03/2015 20:33

"I really ought to try Buffy again but I was put off by the vampire-ness of it"

Love this sentence!

OP posts:
UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 20:29

There's a thread going somewhere about these twee bollocks.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2015 20:22

I really ought to try Buffy again but I was put off by the vampire-ness of it. Maybe when I eventually finish Supernatural I will be sufficiently schooled in the, er, supernatural in order to enjoy it.

Can I come and have a slightly gut punching rant? My stepmum has shared one of those twee pictures on facebook which makes me want to gouge my eyes out (I have hidden it.) It says:

"The reason why daughters love their dad the most is that there is at least one man in the world who will never hurt her"

I mean, for one, BOOOAK. For the second, what utter piffle and rot she is telling her daughter (Yep, all men in the world are out to hurt you, that's what they do) Seriously. And then lastly I just want to comment and say what the fuck, are you blind, do you wonder why I never visit you?? Christ I think my dad has hurt me more (through omission) than any other bloke ever, even though some of them were dickheads and actually trying to.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/03/2015 20:18

Fish have rights? Shock We ate grilled sardine fillets.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 16/03/2015 20:07

Still, yes fish must have rights. But ones related to what we call them are probably less important Smile

SoMuchForSubtlety · 16/03/2015 20:06

*capacity

Sigh. It's been a long day.
