I have a friend who is a criminal defence barrister, representing paedophiles on low incomes. It doesn't mean she agrees with this judge.

Please don't condemn lawyers who defend rapists. If rapists could never access legal counsel, that would make applying our justice system impossible.

I despair that a person , you would assume is of reasonable intelligence and in a position of total legal power, comes out with such disgusting and damaging rubbish.
I expected an 80 year old male judge, not a woman you would expect to have a broader life experience, it makes me wonder if she was a defence lawyer for rapists previously.
DD is a high school teacher and has to deal with teenage crushes all the time, that man, plus any other teacher abusing their position and forming highly inappropriate ( a vast understatement) relationships with a child, is an utter disgrace and unsuitable to work with children.

I did ask on another thread how far society has really come over the years and your post has reminded me that at least if a teacher was taking a pupil for lunch alone now there would be raised eyebrows.

Thank goodness for that. Lets hope he is given a proper sentence and the judge is sacked sent on some kind of training.

Another way to think of it is whether this is sex with informed consent. Her thinking is clouded by the fact that he is an authority figure to her: her decisions cannot be separated from that.

She would still have to get her parent's permission to marry, at 16 you can only go to Harrogate or Welbeck, not join the army and I suspect that, if she was being parented effectively, the sex would never have happened either.

He can do though, I believe the maximum is 5 years in prison.

She was as outraged as I am.

I have no doubt that many male teachers have had the occasional, um, moment to themselves in the presence of some of their older female pupils. But they do NOT act on them because not only is it illegal to do so but it's letting their profession down.
