this is my last hope! Grin

I know there has been a lot of threads moaning about 'how its not like the good old days'....but its REALLY changed. It really has.

Chat is infested with sexism and racism, and it goes unchallenged. nothing massive and really overtly offensive. But just the vibe/culture...lots of low level stuff

IT was not like this even 1 year ago

do you think? or is it just me?

AnyFucker · 11/01/2015 17:13

Good for you, morethan

I have certainly had to admit to myself when I have a skewed perspective or not thought through my arguments properly and this part of MN helps to keep me on the straight and narrow

In fact, it was someone's comment who I recognise from here on another thread that made me think I had been been a bit of a bitch

Spacemen3 · 11/01/2015 16:59

archery I think its the racism ive been struggling with of late, and Islamaphobia, rather than the sexism etc. I suppose perception depends what's going in in RL for people at that particular time

FWR or ( just "F" now?) is the most hospitable place on MN.

The biggest issue I have with MN is the casual unthinking ageism that is rampant (much less a problem on FWR, btw), but I think that MNHQ is now mindful of this issue and willing to tackle it. Otherwise, I would have left a few months ago because it was becoming very depressing.

That's a positive outcome.

ArcheryAnnie · 11/01/2015 16:54

I've found MN a haven for being able to talk about stuff like women's space and women's boundaries, which would get you ripped apart on twitter. There's some amazing women here, and I've been incredibly heartened by readfing what they write.

On non-feminist threads, though, I've been mightily depressed at some of the blatant racism.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/01/2015 16:53

It's funny, posters apologists are popping up on site stuff saying 'no more CE threads' and I'm almost agreeing with them because the threads flush out so many rape apologists that it's making MN look really shit.

(Obviously I jest, not having the threads isn't the answer!)

I had to stop looking at that thread in relationships, although I'm back now.

Koalafications · 11/01/2015 16:47

YY House

It's really depressing.

We have SO far to go. Even women aren't on the side of feminism.

Sad
morethanpotatoprints · 11/01/2015 16:46

Hello OP

I think it is being challenged on here. I posted a most unacceptable post the other day and was one partly to blame on the victim blaming thread.

Whilst it was far from my intention, it came across that way and rightly so was deleted and I received a warning.

I was asked to read the we believe you campaign and could see how my comments had offended people even though I would never have set out to do that.

Sometimes people just need it pointing out to them and the opportunity to realise they were wrong, see it from another perspective apologise, and move on.

LineRunner · 11/01/2015 16:43

Spaceman, hi. Fellow LP of two here. I wish I had found MN sooner tbh.

Yes there is some shit stuff on here now and yes it needs challenging. I take a break occasionally. The CE stuff in RL has been grim. I was pleased to see The Last Leg in RL back up the majority MN stance. 'Don't rape.'

Yes, AnyFucker. I see posters on AIBU or chat and I nod along in agreement and then they post on relationships and I think WTF?!

Really disappointing.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2015 16:37

Yes

House, that thread is at least confirming to me something I had thought about certain regular posters for some time

then you see a couple of reasonable posts from them and you forget

and then you remember Sad

Spacemen3 · 11/01/2015 16:33

i also feel very depressed by the Katie Whatserface thread. I know i dont have to read threads that i am not interested in, but its basically 500 posts going 'im not Katie Hopkins'

Confused

Its called something like big brother controversy.

Spacemen3 · 11/01/2015 16:25

which threda do you speak of koala and tit?

OP posts:
IamTitanium · 11/01/2015 16:21

You are right koala, but hopefully the responses will educate her, make her think about her mindset.
There was recently a thread about a lady being scammed for money by a person cleaning her porch, to be absolutely truthful when I read the post I though why did you not just say no and call the police Blush, I read the first few posts which were all along the same lines.
Later I was thinking about it and thought I would never have thought that if the outcome had been someone posting the same but had been sexually assaulted. I was rightly ashamed of my thought process!
Every day is a day to learn, challenge what you think etc.

Koalafications · 11/01/2015 16:09

Yes, it's just the OP's attitude which is depressing in that one Iam

IamTitanium · 11/01/2015 16:08

There is a thread in AIBU at the moment which is positive re BB Smile

RustyParker · 11/01/2015 16:06

Nah, not cheesy Space I know how you feel. I have a chronic diability and awaiting another major operation and over the years, friends drop off . Other than my poor DH, there aren't too many people to talk about feminism with but I have so much I want to say and want to learn it feel like my head is going to burst. FWR is like a little lifeline where it seems posters know whats in my head. It makes me feel less alone. Now, that's cheesy Blush

Yes, the AIBU attitude seems to have invaded other sections. It's tough reading sometimes and I don't feel like being the one to go against the tide. It's hard to put yourself out there, especially when you aren't very confident in rl.

Can't we have some sort of FWR klaxon to alert the rational posters from FWR to other threads. We could have a little badge maybe? Grin

Spacemen3 · 11/01/2015 15:57

totally agree with and relate to your post rusty, particularly;

I'm in awe of the the posters on this section as they beautifully articulate what I so desperately want to say

and

It probably sounds oh-so-dramatic but feminism has literally saved an changed my life

i keep thiking its not really a very healthy relationship to have with a website. when I was childless, I would have gone out and met friends and talked to them. But finding myself a LP with 2 kids, its harder to find time in RL to seek people out and have these conversations. MN has brought adult companionship and wisdom into my life cheesey fucker Grin

i think maybe general-chat has morphed a bit into AIBU. I never have liked AIBU

OP posts:
YonicSleighdriver · 11/01/2015 15:55

Come to the feminist pub, spaceman?

I had to hide the CE threads for a couple if days, I was on 6-7 and I got too depressed to carry on. No shame in that, fight when you can, take a break when you need to.

The obviously goady fuckers are quite amusing though - or rather the response often is. I like watching them get eaten alive
