Sorry if someone has already posted this already, but I just saw this: This

I think it has summed it up perfectly.

OP posts:

Knock me down with a feather!

helpmeunderstand · 29/11/2014 12:39

What a surprise, yoffwoba only started posting yesterday and only trolling posting on the feminism boards.

Curviest · 29/11/2014 11:55

Yoff woba your verbal exchanges do sound very sound at first... however, it can stray into some dangerous territory. For example, "don't put your good on display or they might get stolen" can translate into "don't wear a skirt higher than ankle length, or a cropped top, or a plunge neckline because if you do and you are raped you contributed to it".

RufusTheReindeer · 29/11/2014 11:27

Most peoples response to "my friend mugged/robbed me" would be what a wanker, not are you sure you didn't give them the money

FFS Hmm

Can't remember who said that upthread

Not victim blaming advice which puts the responsibility for not raping women on the people who can prevent rapes.

HTH

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 29/11/2014 09:11

They had a bit of a party here last night I think, buffy.

Just normal friday night behaviour for Paul Elam's mates. Saddos.

scallopsrgreat · 29/11/2014 09:11

And lol to the old mansplaining of stats. Because we just haven't gone through that enough times! And none of us have ever been involved with the gathering of stats and research, ever.

scallopsrgreat · 29/11/2014 09:09

Drink is heavily involved in a lot of rapes - because the rapist drinks not because the victim drinks. That is a bigger mitigating factor. So where are all the posters telling men not to drink in case they rape someone?

And making analogies to looking after possessions or smoke alarms seems to imply that women can just lock up their vaginas. You are aware that we are people who are entitled to be out in public and drink (with our vaginas)? We are entitled to do that without being raped too. Treating women like objects to be 'watched' is not acceptable.

If all the women in the world stopped drinking, women would still be raped. It's not the root of the problem, it's not even a symptom.

Not to mention the fact that 90% of rapes happen by someone the victim knows. Over 50% are in the home.

"How can anyone other than those involved know the existence of crimes that aren't reported?" We listen to women. Lots of them. We hear what they say.

Also, if the rapist was in a bar, and the woman who caught his eye to rape wasn't drunk enough, do you think he just gave in and went home?

More likely he just found another woman who he felt he could rape - perhaps because she was drunk.

So you haven't prevented rape happening at all.

Rapists cause rape, not drunk women.

BinarySolo · 29/11/2014 03:35

Right. So then saying she was raped because she'd been drinking is victim blaming.

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 03:24

"She drank so she fancied the rapist a bit, maybe flirted..."

I don't know, I wasn't there. (and how is anyone supposed to know if any random person is a rapist just by looking at them exactly?)

But even if she did, the male should know women can't give consent while drunk and not had sex with her even if she made the advances. Right?

BinarySolo · 29/11/2014 03:19

No, but have you ever heard of the term "beer goggles"?

Wow. So how are you not blaming the victim there? She drank so she fancied the rapist a bit, maybe flirted...

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 03:14

No, but have you ever heard of the term "beer goggles"?

GarlicNovember · 29/11/2014 03:12

What? Are you suggesting alcohol makes women fancy rapists?

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 03:10

"Murder rises with icecream sales. Proven fact. Does icecream cause murder?"

Ad-hoc fallacy comes to mind there. It might, it might not. Further research would be needed.

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 03:09

"Means the other 2 out of every 3 had not been drinking."

The flaw in your logic is you assume the sober victims would have avoided being raped if they had drank alcohol.

Alcohol doesn't compare to ice-cream. Ice-cream generally doesn't lower inhibitions, increase confidence, make people fancy people they wouldn't fancy otherwise etc etc

helpmeunderstand · 29/11/2014 03:04

Considering she called it "equally stupid" I don't think she was trying to give a sensible logical soloution. But it makes sense, it's safer to get drunk than it is to be sober, 66% of rape happens sober. It also makes sense not to hang around with anyone who eats icecream because they're more likely to kill you.

Well it does if we don't know the difference between correlation and causation.

GarlicNovember · 29/11/2014 03:00

Not when I'm following your logic, Yoff, no!

1 in 3 when had been drinking.

Means the other 2 out of every 3 had not been drinking.

Logic.

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 02:58

"advising women to drink, since this may halve their chance of being raped."

I take it logic isn't your strong point

helpmeunderstand · 29/11/2014 02:58

Murder rises with icecream sales. Proven fact. Does icecream cause murder?

GarlicNovember · 29/11/2014 02:56

"1 in 3 reported rapes happen when the women has been drinking"

This logically tells us that 2 in 3 reported rapes happen when the woman has not been drinking.

If you insist on abiding by this stupid poster, and the equally stupid implication that women can influence whether rapists rape, then you should be advising women to drink, since this may halve their chance of being raped.

yoffwoba · 29/11/2014 02:52

"A fact that is irrelevant"

So the 33% of women who were allegedly raped while drunk would still have been raped if they had stayed sober that night?

GarlicNovember · 29/11/2014 02:52

Yoff.

Smoke alarm: gives advance warning of hazard. Rapists do not give advance warning. There is no 'rapist alarm' like a smoke alarm. Example is null.

Lock house/car: if you propose that this advice has an analogy in rape, you must imagine women can somehow lock themselves up. Example is null.

Watch your valuables: Women are constantly watchful for danger. Example is valid.

Your ideas are victim-blaming because you believe there are protective measures that can help women avoid being raped by rapists. There aren't. You want to tell women there's some way they could/should know when a rapist's going to rape them, and could/should be able to avoid it. In doing this, you take some of the responsibility for rape away from the rapist. You put that responsibility on his victims. Why would you do that?
