Ok, apologies, but I'm just running in the door to have a scream. I'll probably run straight out again.

I have two teenage DC and was window shopping for christmas ideas. Found a great shop, full of fun ideas for teenagers, but then saw the name - 'Menkind' - what's that all about then? Marketing epic fail?

It's this idea that women are innately disposed to like fluffy towelling robes and men to like GPS's.

(Actually I like both.)

Not at work, with the 7 year old! At a play date Smile

It builds on the idea that men will only buy things marketed to men, but women will buy things marketed to men or to women.

In other words, it's a terrible thing to buy something marketed to women if you're a man.

Hence: sexist in it's ideology.

Women are used to feeling somewhat excluded, so we cope ok when it happens, whether in a retail environment or otherwise. I'm regularly "the only woman in the room" at work. I never comment on it and rarely notice any more. If a man is the only man in the room he ALWAYS mentions it, in my experience. I've even been in groups where the only man was 7, and he still managed to both notice and mention it.

It's sexist marketing. It relies on presumptions that all men like the same kind of stuff. And that women don't particularly like that stuff.

LongDistanceLove · 28/11/2014 21:49

I own a vagina, I have been in that shop, there were no alarms or security that bundled me out when I walked through the threshold.

I have bought stuff in that shop for me, I haven't grown a penis nor have my ovaries dropped out.

It might be stupid marketing yes, but sexist? No I don't think so. It would be sexist if it said women can't shop here.

alicemalice · 28/11/2014 21:41

Course it's sexist.

Sexism definition
Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex.

Spidergirl8 · 28/11/2014 21:37

I've always felt that shop is full of expensive tat, let the 'menkind' waste their time and money in it if they wish ;)

davey321 · 28/11/2014 19:16

oMgawd that is sooo sexist, how can the owners of the shop do this , shame on them

Returning · 28/11/2014 18:46

Bless! It's appalling marketing. Why on earth would you market goods towards 50% of the population when a good proportion of the other 50% of the population would be interested also? It's a horrendous example of 'othering' and is stupidly sexist. And, no, I wouldn't buy 'Womens Own' either!!

I don't see how this is sexist?? It's a shop marketed towards men. No-one is saying women can't shop there or anything.
Is Women's Own magazine sexist for having the word Women in the title?

It's like a name someone off The Apprentice would come out with! And then lose the task.
