Feminist Pub 14: The Bluestocking, a place for feminist chat and feminists to chat

Welcome!

This is the 14th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, flop onto the chaise lounges with some Wine

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and a variety of drinks and snacks. And stools/bar counters at female friendly heights. And a crèche in the back somewhere

Will link the last pub in the next post!

Morning all

Welcome 50Shades, and many congratulation to karma. I hope you're getting some sleep. Smile

I am sulking because I have had yet another "we thought you were great in interview but the other candidate was slightly more awesome so we're offering the job to them" email. Gah! I need a job!

Those of you who are trying to shift a bit of weight, I have a thread going to general chat, support and accountability going. It has gone quiet, which is annoying, but I shall plough on regardless. Please come along and join in if you think it could be helpful to you.

Hello all. Been away for work, but Iiiiii'm bbaaaacck!

So...

  • Assisted in getting a male misogynist called twindad76 banned on a relationships thread

  • Growled at an interfering man on a plane "I am sick of being told by men what to do." Angry Angry Angry

  • Had a great discussion with a female work colleague about feminism without ever mentioning the F word Wink

  • Gave a mouthy, obnoxious, misogynistic man a filthy, filthy, filthy look that shut him and crappy friend up

How's everyone else's week been? Smile

DemisRoussos · 20/11/2014 10:59

Forgot to say congratulations to Karma and welcome to BabyKarma! I hope all is going well

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 20/11/2014 10:28

DemisRoussos · 20/11/2014 09:46

Hello all, trying to stay off MN atm as got a shed load of work to do Hmm but a quick half in the pub won't hurt, will it?!

Strength to all of those who need it this week.

UptoapointLordCopper · 20/11/2014 09:42

I'm amused by my desktop at work. It shouts ECOQUIET when it starts up...

UptoapointLordCopper · 20/11/2014 08:45

Ooo! Howl's Moving Castle! That'd be a nice place to live in (as long as there's no Wicked Witch of the Waste). Where would your doors open to?

I need to plant some seeds this afternoon. Somebody tell me I can deal with my garden. It's only small.

YonicScrewdriver · 20/11/2014 08:40

Don't look, LordC. Trust me...

Morning! Hello 50shades.
How's the new job going Petula?

Could I have a large tea please? I've arrived way too early for a seminar so am MNing in the car.

I may need to take a break from MN though - I dreamt that I went to a FWR meetup last night! It was cool obviously, but not as cool as the night before when I dreamt I lived in Howl's Moving Castle. It RULED.

KateeGee · 20/11/2014 07:40

Apologies to the people of Norfolk, I should havd said "that BBC Radio Norfolk presenter". There's a thread about it LordCopper, but if you are depressed enough about misogyny and rape myths in the Media you could probably guess the rest...

UptoapointLordCopper · 20/11/2014 07:32

Hello 50shades! Like your name. Smile

What Norfolk person? On second thoughts, don't tell me...

Chunky Good luck with hampers. It beggers believe that people would actually inconvenient themselves and go out of the way to enforce gender stereotype. Why would you do that!? Confused

ChunkyPickle · 20/11/2014 07:19

EBearHug - yes, that's a good idea - I was also thinking down the lines that there are an uneven number of boys and girls (can't remember which way it's skewed) - but if it's more boys then it sounds like I'm being overly precious about my boy.

I shall engage the secretary in chat this morning and suggest it.

I've already raised it as a vague point with the parents I stand with in the playground.

I can't believe how I'm fine challenging family, strangers, shops, but when it comes to the (vaguely - and not even over me) authority figures at my child's school I lose the plot!

PetulaGordino · 20/11/2014 06:15

Welcome 50shades!

I am in the throes of new job information overload so brain struggling to engage with anything else at the moment, but trying to keep up and thinking of everyone who has tough stuff going on Flowers

I've complained about the Norfolk person. Awaiting non-apology with bated breath

Yes that was awful, Scone. I reported it and then in the MN reply got one of the horrific image in my inbox. Just horrible. I don't know what they have to gain from that.

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 20/11/2014 00:56

OMG scone, I missed that - but I remember it happening a while back on a different thread.

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 20/11/2014 00:54

I've been forcibly reminded this week just how often men fuck up the lives of women and children. sad

Dragonlette, I just wanted to reply to your post here. I am not involved in any way professionally, but in the last couple of years I really have come across an awful lot of this among female friends of mine. A friend's dh turning out to be a horrific paedophile, friend raped by her ex-partner, friend left by her dh who is currently making her life an absolute misery. It's like it's become an epidemic in my life - all these friends (seemingly) happy lives have literally disintegrated before my eyes.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 20/11/2014 00:50

Hello and welcome, 50Shades!

So sorry you are not feeling well kickass. Flowers

I know what you mean about the rape threads. I just have to stay away. The thread about the domestic violence survivor with the safe room who has gone to court over the bedroom tax is pretty depressing too.

I'm still reeling a bit over the thread a few days ago about Time Magazine suggesting "feminist" as a word that should be banned, which was invaded by trolls posting images of violence against women. I must be pretty innocent as an internet user because I had never experienced anything like that before. It felt very personal.

I need a hot chocolate with frangelico. Is there frangelico in the pub? It's damned cold here in Florida.

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 20/11/2014 00:42

Btw, I sent in a complaint about that godawful radio Norfolk bloke - it's not often I actually get round to complaining - but REALLY ?!?!

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 20/11/2014 00:40

Cripes kickass, that's horrific.

Hope you get the thyroid thing sorted- sounds awful. I had my thyroid checked when I was feeling all out of sorts - but it was normal. Just lack of sleep for me I think - I'm a terrible one staying up too late. Ooops again. And welcome 50shades Wine

kickassangel · 20/11/2014 00:28

Hi 50 shades.

I am so tired. My thyroid really is fucked and it is making me so tired and my urgent appointment with an endocrinologist isn't until Dec 18 and I am tired!

I know what new born baby tired is and this is just as bad, worse maybe cos it gives me a sore throat and a headaches and swollen glands and it makes me tired! Did I mention I'm tired? I just need a doctor to wave a magic wand and make me feel all better again.

Ok, self pitying whine over, but Dh is out with work and I have no-one to talk to. It takes months to get thyroid crap sorted out so even my shiny new meds won't make me feel any better for a while.

I have given up on rape threads, just not worth the effort. Sometimes I am tempted to go on there and quote Diana Scully, who interviewed convicted rapist. One of whom was also a serial murderer. He thought of himself as a nice guy because he was kind to his victims, and even gentle while he raped them and stuck his blade into their hearts. Yep, that's how nice he was.

50ShadesofNope · 20/11/2014 00:28

Thank you!

Wine is in hand. Off to skim through the thread to see what I've missed so far Smile

YonicScrewdriver · 20/11/2014 00:24

50ShadesofNope · 20/11/2014 00:12

Hello!

As a very new de-lurker I just wanted to come over and say hi. Very excited to (finally) be here now that the scary first post is out of the way to finally say that you're all flipping fantastic! I'm glad there's such a lovely hangout for like minded folk to discuss important issues AND get a G&T on an evening - what could be better. Smile
