The song is "Wiggle" By Jason Derulo, with a charming rap by Snoop Dogg.

Lyrics as follows - and please look away now if likely to be offended:

Hey, yo, Jason
Say somethin' to her, Holla at her [Laughs]
I got one question
How do you fit all that... in them jeans? [Laughs]

You know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus:]
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle
Just a little bit of... swing

Patty cake, Patty cake
With no hands
Got me in this club making wedding plans
If I take pictures while you do your dance
I can make you famous on Instagram

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

Cadillac, Cadillac, pop that trunk
Let's take a shot
Alley oop that dunk tired of working that 9 to 5
Oh baby let me come and change your life

Hot damn it
Your booty like two planets
Go head, and go ham sandwich
Whoa, I can't stand it

'Cause you know what to do with that big fat butt

[Chorus]

[Snoop Dogg rap:]
Shake what your mama gave you
Misbehave you
I just wanna strip you, dip you, flip you, bubble bathe you
What they do
Taste my rain drops, K boo
Now what you will and what you want and what you may do
Completely separated,
Till I deeply penetrate it
Then I take it out and wipe it off
Eat it, ate it, love it, hate it
Overstated, underrated, everywhere I've been
Can you wiggle, wiggle for the D, O, double G, again?

Etc. (there's some more but that's got most of it covered)

Would you say anything to the school? I have a 6 year old DD. When this song comes on the radio I turn it over as I hate it. She asked me why once so I explained to her that it is two men talking about women's bodies in a not nice way. When the song came on at the disco she got quite upset and asked should they be playing this? I think it is wildly inappropriate and want to challenge it. But am I overthinking it?

Would you mention it to the school?

I'm old enough to remember when Relax was banned from the play list on the top 40.

Anyhow back to modern days. Yes Infant discos is a thing and has been for years. My DC are 16 and 12. At the school my DD's went to they incorporated party games too such as musical statues. Small children are very aware of what is in the charts and would expect to hear their favourite current hit song but the meaning goes over their heads.

Remember LMFAO I'm Sexy And I Know It with the censored video, played all the time at school discos and the DC laughed their heads off.

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 12:38

The school have replied and I am happy with their reply. I can't give too many details as really don't want to out anyone, but they have agreed it is inappropriate and a genuine oversight, and that it won't happen again. I am happy with this.

The song was not censored in any way. And it is a really shit song as well.

Inappropriate songs have indeed been round for years. But I think there is a difference between "I wanna make you sweat" and "You know what to do with that big fat butt". And songs about sex are fine (for an adult!), but songs about anal sex whether you're fine with it or not and whether you love it or hate it, are not fine.

Thank you all for a thought-provoking thread.

HowsTheSerenity That was Another Level, I can't remember what it was called. Freak Me? Something like that.

Sex on the Beach and Mousse T's 'Horny' were regular fixtures at my secondary school discos. Confused

MackerelOfFact · 10/11/2014 12:34

I have to admit that I led a group of under-10s in a bit of a boogie to this song at a wedding earlier in the year. I was quite tipsy didn't realise the lyrics were so horrible, the 'wiggle wiggle wiggle' chorus was just catchy and seemed quite sweet for us all to wiggle to. Blush

I know that a lot of songs are quite revolting when you listen to them properly, but there are plenty that aren't - the playlist it quite a major part of school disco so I would hope that someone would've paid slightly more attention.

KateeGee · 10/11/2014 12:19

Ha Serenity are you thinking of Freak Me by Silk (later covered by Another Level)? "let me lick you up and dowwwnnnn til you say stop, let me play with your body baby, make you real hot, let me do all the things you want me to do, cause tonight baby, I wanna get freaky with you". Awful, but at least he is pleasuring the lady in that one. It is, however, a crime against music.

HowsTheSerenity · 10/11/2014 12:16

katee Color Me Badd! I thought that song was soooo rude.

What was that song that had the lyrics (think mid 90's) 'I want to lick you up and down....'? Only two songs banned at school dances. Oh and Closer by
NiN Grin

coraltoes · 10/11/2014 12:16

Katee I thought it was all "a lalalalalong" but no. Girl I wanna make you sweat, sweat til you can sweat no more, and if you cry out I'm gonna push it some more or orrrrr. Depressing.

KateeGee · 10/11/2014 12:13

Blimey coral, you're right. I thought "what are you talking about? That's a gentle happy reggae song!" but then thought about it again and you are quite right

coraltoes · 10/11/2014 12:09

I used to listen to "Girl I wanna make you sweat" on the radio. I had no idea how rude it was at the time. But MY god! Why on earth is it ok to have songs that basically say "you might not want sex or you might not want it a particular way but by gum, this is what I want to do to you, and I'll probably do it anyway"

Fucking sick.

KateeGee · 10/11/2014 11:55

Interesting that someone mentioned Boom Boom Boom by the Outhere Brothers. I was 11 and in my last year of primary school when that came out and distinctly remember it at my Leaver's Disco, and my classmates and I jumped around to it with great enthusiasm. I remember there was a big media hoo-ha about them at the time, saying they were inappropriate for children. I thought "but the lyrics were nowhere near as bad", I then just looked them up and it turns out the version I am familiar with is heavily censored, eg the kid friendly version says "put your arms around me girl, and your kisses on my face" or something, but the original says "Put your niney on my tongue And your booty on my face". Massive difference.

If this Jason Derulo song was censored, and the hideous Snoop Dogg bit were cut out completely, I'd let it slide, but if they just played the whole uncensored lyrics at a school disco I'd be quite shocked.

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 11:32

I will let you know what they say, thank you.

I would be really unhappy about this. I think you're right to question it. Do please let us know how the school responds.

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 10:59

Thank you KateeGee. Yes it was introduced by the DJ as "Here is the wiggle song!". Innocuous indeed.

OP posts:
KateeGee · 10/11/2014 10:15

I think you've handled it well.

"I Wanna Sexx You Up" was around when I was 6, I vaguely knew what it was about but I don't think I ever heard it at a children's event. And this song is ten times worse. I guess the innocuous title hides the somewhat sinister lyrics.

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 10:01

I should also add that DD was upset in a "Why would they play this?" way, she wasn't crying or distraught or anything! She wanted to leave anyway as it was way too loud.

She had previously liked the song but had noticed the "holler at her" and the "big fat butt" parts and had asked me about it, which is why I explained to her it is inappropriate for children. Usually I turn the radio over/off if some such crap comes on, I don't explain why every time.

NotWiggling · 10/11/2014 09:53

Interesting to see some different responses, thank you.

I did email the school, just to say please have a think about what is being played at these discos in future. I have not made a huge deal of it or gone in all guns blazing, just mentioned it is inappropriate.

Do some people really think I have ruined DD's innocence by informing her this is not a very nice song and that's why I turn the radio off when it comes on? Hmm Surely the casual misogyny that is all around us, that we are supposed to be "cool" about, will ruin her "innocence" a lot faster?

And yes the rap does refer to anal sex, whether the woman wants it or not. I don't expect DD to "get" this bit, of course not, but it is there and it is part of the tone of the whole song.

Thank you for all the responses so far.

I wouldn't be happy, no. I got the arse when my son's dance teacher was using "Blurred LInes" as one of the dance tracks - great tune, yes, abysmal lyrics and message. She stopped using it after she'd listened to it a bit harder, thank goodness!

Smartleatherbag · 10/11/2014 08:22

Yes oohlala, totally agree re it not being ok, regardless of what used to be acceptable. Good point.

Featherxmas · 10/11/2014 08:18

Please raise this with the school the song is disgusting and indecent and not right for an infant school disco. Not everyone has time to be of the PTA, however that doesn't mean you don't have a say at your child's school experience. Hmm

YonicScrewdriver · 10/11/2014 08:15

(That was to darkside)

YonicScrewdriver · 10/11/2014 08:15

"Now what you will and what you want and what you may do
Completely separated,
Till I deeply penetrate it"

This bit - what she wants and what she may do are separated.

oohlalabonbons · 10/11/2014 08:05

I'm a year 6 teacher and am proud to say a group of girls in my class asked the dj to take this song off in their summer disco before I had the chance to do so.

Just because 'it happened when we were younger' doesn't make it ok.

Perhaps if more people had challenged it then, this acceptance of so-called 'low level' sexism and misogyny wouldn't be as bad as it is now!

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 10/11/2014 08:05

which bit refers to anal raping?!?

Smartleatherbag · 10/11/2014 08:03

Sure, there's always been inappropriate lyrics, but I think it's perfectly reasonable to draw the line at anal rape.
I sang along to Like A Virgin too, but at least she was having a good time!

enderwoman · 10/11/2014 08:00

I would send in my complaint with a suggested song list.

I suspect the person who picked the track list picked up a random compilation (after all life is busy enough for most of us) or asked a teen child (I would) and perhaps the pta or whoever organises the disco can use your suggestions next year.
