This is one of the best articles I've read about porn. It just says everything so well

It's a really good article. I particularly liked that he didn't trawl through to find the worst stuff, but went to the first page of the most popular p0rn site on the web, and it still brought up the kind of hateful misogynistic crap the "sex positive" feminists would like us to believe is far out of the mainstream.

AskBasil · 23/10/2014 13:32

Well by calling Gail Dines Mary Whitehouse Mark II you've immediately ensured you lack credibility. MW was a right wing moralist, GD is a feminist. Accusing anti-porn feminists of being moralistic, anti sex, anti enjoyment, is a very well-worn man-pleasing tactic. Hey look at me, I'm one of the cool girls, not like those pearl clutchers over there. It's only works if the people you're talking to are impressed by shit like that.

Google porn (without the filters). It is the most popular search engine on the web and it works by showing a list of sites in order of popularity. Have a look at what the most popular stuff is. See how many misogynist, violent, sexist sites you need to wade through, before you come to the liberated empowerfulising stuff. Good luck with that, see you in five years.

watch out there claire, your agenda is showing

claireredfield · 23/10/2014 13:10

Sorry but this is certainly no silver bullet as far as arguing against sex positive feminists with regards to porn. The fact that it links to Gail 'Mary Whitehouse Mk2' Dines sets alarm bells ringing, before even reading the article. It certainly doesn't disappoint with coming up with the usual nonsense we have come to expect from the anti porn lobby. As soon as he makes the claim 'This is porn that exists, right now – and statistically, it’s what most men are watching' He fails right there. Porn is such a massive spectrum with millions of sites encompassing all kinds of genres, erotica, softcore, erotic fiction etc. To make such an assumption like this is disingenuous. I would like to see where he gets his stats from about what exactly people are looking at?

AsAMan · 23/10/2014 12:39

really good article basil

msrisotto · 22/10/2014 19:23

Nice article, thanks

justiceofthePeas · 22/10/2014 18:49

neofaust is your gf a dumb whore, pussy or ghetto bitch? A slut? Or any of the derogatory terms used in porn film titles and would you stand there while someone called her any of those things and defend their right to free speech. (Not that I am saying she is not capable of defending herself)
I am basically asking if you are comfortable referring to your partner in that kind of way? Or your mother or your daughter for that matter.

OutsSelf · 22/10/2014 18:02

Yikes, that read slightly coldly... I should say I do regard the production of porn as damaging to the individuals concerned, but their apparent agency in that is used to nullify that argument

OutsSelf · 22/10/2014 17:58

Great article I thought.

Isn't hate speech the counter to the freedom of expression/ speech argument? It's neat in that I don't have to make an argument that the individuals concerned are harmed through the production of porn, but that I am harmed because violent and misogynistic porn is hate speech against me as a woman

AskBasil · 22/10/2014 17:51

Which part of his argument did you find poor neofaust and on what grounds?

That your girlfriend likes porn?

How does that negate his argument?

grimbletart · 22/10/2014 15:48

Good parts of porn? Now there's an oxymoron...

QisforQcumber · 22/10/2014 15:35

Thank you AskBasil, I know a few people(women and men) who will find that article interesting.

"We generally consider rape, abuse, humiliation, racism, misogyny, and degradation to be among some of the worst things in the world, and these are all things the pornography industry is overflowing with. "

^This is exactly how I feel about the porn industry. Those words made me think of when I watched 12 years a Slave and felt physically sick. It was a deep, visceral reaction which made me feel shame, horror and sadness. I don't understand how anyone could find these actions a turn on. I know that people do but I will never, ever understand.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 22/10/2014 14:44

He's probably not all that keen on strip clubs either, given that they also exploit women for the all powerful men's orgasm.

Could be wrong though, maybe he's only worried about exploitation and violence, racism, abuse and misogyny when it's filmed. Doubt it....

NeoFaust · 22/10/2014 13:09

but ask yourself, how much of a pornography industry would there be if men were all cosmically barred from masturbation while they watched?

I wonder if he realises he's just described strip clubs?

They seem to be doing okay.

And yes, free speech, no censorship, my girlfriend is more extreme than I am. His argument is poor.

PumpkinGordino · 22/10/2014 13:08

i don't think the rest of the article was surplus to requirements either. you have to support your statements and explain your reasoning. otherwise most articles would be only as long as a twitter post with no reason for anyone to consider the background of the statement

IdealistAndProudOfIt · 22/10/2014 13:01

I don't think the rest of the article was unjustified, because you need to repeat and repeat and repeat to get it through the target mens' thick skulls!

It was well-written too.

It's a very good point, but he made it in the first paragraph, the rest of the article was totally unnecessary.

turbonerd · 22/10/2014 08:54

Ã… good article. It is sickening how porn is justified. It is the height of selfishness.
I think he got that point across very well.

PumpkinGordino · 22/10/2014 08:53

thanks, will read when not on work computer

YonicScrewdriver · 22/10/2014 06:51

Thanks.

justiceofthePeas · 22/10/2014 01:14

It is a good article although I think it swims against an enormous tide. Sad
How did it ever come to this?
