Big fat trigger warning. I've never seen such hyper sexualised violence agaisnt women in a music video before. And considering that's pretty much all videos now, I think that says a lot.

I could not get past his awful screechy voice!

PacificDogwood · 04/10/2014 17:32

Ah, I see Grin.
I enjoyed it, so thanks.

TheSameBoat · 04/10/2014 14:15

Oh I see. Well it was a good video anyway Astra Smile

southeastastra · 04/10/2014 13:05

I meant to post that YouTube to Facebook sorry blame the wine

MrsMarcJacobs · 04/10/2014 12:07

I like Maroon 5 but that video is disgusting. I had to switch it off so didn't see the whole thing except her very bloody face in hospital. Grim.

JanineStHubbins · 04/10/2014 12:01

The Leonard Cohen video reminded me of a great line he said last week, on the relationship between Canada and the US.

'We (Canadians) watch America the way women watch men: very, very carefully.'

Appropriate to this thread, I think. And points up the ludicrousness of comparing that crass Maroon Fucking Five video with someone who has such a sensitive and empathetic grasp of relationship dynamics.

Zazzles007 · 04/10/2014 11:50

God knows Briar, but then again, astra can't see anything wrong with the Maroon 5 video either. Demonstrates quite a flawed thinking, I believe.

The Cohen video show a happy couple having sex with no gore, what is the relevance to this thread?

PacificDogwood · 04/10/2014 11:37

I think the Leonard Cohen video shows 'enthusiastic consent' and sexual activity between two happy adults.
V different from Marron 5 IMO

TheSameBoat · 04/10/2014 10:05

I like the Leonard Cohen video, Astra, miles away from the Maroon 5 video though.

I mean one's clearly about consensual sex (and even conveys that message at the end) whilst the other is about a stalker who fantasises about sneaking into a woman's appartment whilst she's asleep and having blood-soaked sex and also likes hugging slabs of meats hanging from a basement ceiling.

Miles apart.

Also I'm glad your teenage boy wouldn't be affected by this but the debate IMO isn't really so much about the direct influence of videos like M5s on individuals.

It's about the normalisation of sexual violence in our society facilitating a minority of men to carry sick fantasy into real life, making all women afraid.

It's about us being asked to identify with the stalker in this video, to see it through his eyes and not through the eyes of the woman (the LC video woman clearly has agency, is enjoying herself and is free to leave at any time)

It's about the chilling message to women that if we have no control over who watches us, over their fantasies about us, and the only thing that stops their fantasy becoming our reality is their goodwill and what they think is acceptable to carry out. Which is why media like this is damaging : it slowly alters the mainstream to make sexual violence more acceptable in the minds of such people. Like I said it facilitates.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 03/10/2014 21:23

Yes, it was, wasn't it Astra.

I did enjoy the Mary Whitehouse comment in your post though.

MamaMary · 03/10/2014 21:12

OfCom are the standards regulators. Anything broadcast on any station in the UK is subject to OfCom. This has to breach their guidelines. My laptop has died so I can't go on their website right now - can someone else have a look? I'll check as soon as can get access.

The difference between this and porn is that porn is not actually broadcast,so it's not subject to the same rules.

Grim. Not only disturbing and violent and all kinds of scary but also FUCKING WEIRD. Adam swinging off slabs of meat and meat hooks? It's all a bit wrecking ball, but with dead cows and more sexual violence.

What are the rules for reporting to Offcom Mary?

Maroon 5 are hardly "Niche". The worst horror films are rated to to keep young children and teenagers away from them. This is a pop group releasing a video featuring sexual violence to a wide audience.

i feel very strange having watched that. It's really disgusting.

I watched a documentary last night called Mummy's Little Murderer, and it's stayed with me all day. Seeing that video beggars belief, and this is mainstream 'entertainment'??

:(

YonicScrewdriver · 03/10/2014 20:15

Means what the hell!

southeastastra · 03/10/2014 20:14

what does 'the hell' mean

MrsCakesPrecognition · 03/10/2014 20:07

I find it very easy to stop my 10 yo accessing horror films. Going by the way Blurred Lines cropped up any and everywhere, I find it harder to stop her accessing music lyrics and videos.

The hell? Someone isn't allowed to object to one thing unless they object to everything?

MamaMary · 03/10/2014 20:01

We should all complain to OfCom. It is simply unacceptable that this should be broadcast in the UK (or anywhere). It's glorifying stalking women, rape, blood, violence against women
