Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Reducing the male population by 90% will solve all our problems

So, will anyone be up for celebrating international castration day? The Femitheist, a 22 year old criminology student has been writing a book where she argues for a new future based upon conscious social controls, sex-selective abortions, development of dual-female progeny, single sex education, the eradication of the nuclear family, containment of the remaining men, and "Perfect girls will be conceived, developed, and engineered in state-owned breeding centres"

"I believe that conventional equality, with a 50/50 female-to-male ratio, is an inferior system. Essentially my ideas lead to men being made a special class – a far more valued class – having choice of a myriad of women due to the difference in sex ratio. That is my intention. Men would be made more valuable, and their quality of life would be dramatically improved. They would have a subsidised existence if you will, akin to going on an all-expenses paid vacation that lasts from birth to death"

This is worse than Plato and his loony republic. But could this really be worse than our current reality? I am just wondering what others think, is this really radical, completely bonkers, rational?

Crikey that was a erm interesting read.

The point about sex selective termination and getting rid of lots of boys - sounds horrific - but of course is happening with girls to a lesser extent.

The idea that being "more in demand" will improve matters for men - demonstrably that has not happened for women - who are always deemed as the ones being "in demand" and especially where sex selective abortion has made females more scarce. The results have not been that the special ladies are all treated like princesses and have a marvellous time by a long shot.

She seems to envisage that heterosexual women would be quite comfortable with not having hardly any men around, that some of them would be happy to have relationships with women instead. I envisage massive massive great fights over access!

As a sort of reverse exercise to show up how bad some of the current situations are for women by applying them to men - maybe some of it. What do they call it. Thought exercise?

As an actual plan, hmmmm. Well that's not going to work is it.

Apart from anything else she imagines that a society mainly of women would be better. She has no way of knowing that does she.

Plus, you know, I for one like boys Grin

Ugh. Cue thousands of idiots with access to a computer who can't differentiate between one crazy lunatic and the rest of feminism. I can't help but feel that the 'journalist' had this agenda in mind.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 24/08/2014 18:32

I was going to say men are already a privileged class too!

Oh, this Femitheist person is either a troll or spent far too much of her university career exploring pharmaceuticals.

grimbletart · 24/08/2014 18:07

What a nut job.

MiniTheMinx · 24/08/2014 17:56

The idea that men will become a privileged class...erm do they not have this anyway. When she argues that men are on average more likely to suffer violence and that it is men that give up their lives to war, she argues as though she were advocating for men's rights.

Mini, to answer your question (we cross posted), clearly it's not feminist. This is firmly filed in the "nutter writing in purple ink" category, and actually not worth devoting any thought to. As I said above, the only implication for feminists is that this sort of shit is going to be quoted back at us by every MRA nut on the opposite side for years to come.

EBearhug · 24/08/2014 17:45

Men would be a special, valued class with a greatly improved quality of life? So they get a life-long vacation, and women have to do all the rubbish jobs (including looking after them), as well as the higher status work of running the world. Not so very different for the life of some men currently.

Also, it sounds like she wants people to behave in quite restricted ways with lots of social controls. Now, I'm all for some social controls - it's good that we don't encourage murder or theft or so on - but I don't want to live in some Orwellian state where you're only allowed to think in particular ways. I like knowing people from all sorts of backgrounds (and sexes). It's people's imperfections which make them human and interesting - perfection would be pretty dull, I reckon.

Still, I suppose it is more to start conversation around it than a serious proposal. I hope. Could make a good dystopian novel, though.

PacificDogwood · 24/08/2014 17:44

Is her identity known?
Do we know that the Femitheist is in fact a woman (by whatever definition you care to chose)?

Her interview just reads really odd… apart from the obvious odd, I mean.

PacificDogwood · 24/08/2014 17:42

I all that sounds like a brilliant idea - for a work of fiction.
Can she write?
I've never heard of her or her blog and have high hopes that she might grow up in the fullness of time.

LurcioAgain · 24/08/2014 17:40

And there, in a nutshell, is the problem with the internet age. While in times gone by, only career academics had to read the twaddle produced by truly jejeune and (in this case) clearly bonkers 22 year olds, now they can foist it upon the wider world.

Unfortunately, over the next couple of decades this will be quoted over and over again by MRAs saying "look what these evil rad fems really think," when in fact it is a silly little only-just-grown-out-of-childhood twerp trying to be deliberately provocative to get a rise out of the grown-ups.

(Disclaimer - in my stint as an academic, most students, 95%, were very nice and some were truly brilliant with a maturity way beyond their years - but every so often you'd come across one like this!)

MiniTheMinx · 24/08/2014 17:36

I am wondering also how feminist is the statement "Perfect girls will be engineered" What is a perfect girl, do we need to be perfected? what is wrong with women that haven't been engineered to perfection? who gets to decide what perfection is?

Sounds completely bonkers.

NerfHerder · 24/08/2014 17:24

What an horrific solution to a non-problem.

What an horrific solution to a non-problem.

contortionist · 24/08/2014 17:22

If you could crack dual-female progeny, why have any men at all?

I'm not at all convinced a solely female society would be radically different though. I strongly suspect that women can be just as destructive, divisive, and power-hungry as men, if given the opportunity.
