Cheers Really. I despair of the attitudes that says 'I'm doing ok, so there is no problem that has affected either me or could affect others.
Yeah, honey, I worry deeply about those things. They're hugely unlikely to happen to me, but I worry that we live in a country where they happen, and I worry because sexism and misogyny exist on a spectrum. The worst atrocities become acceptable because of all the other 'little stuff' that goes unchallenged precisely because it's little stuff. But it all contributes to an internalised idea that women are lesser; that it's ok to pay them less, to sack them because they're 'bossy', to grope a woman on the train, to assume that because you bought a woman a meal, she owes you sex, to object to your girlfriend having male friends, to keep her in line through verbal and physical abuse, to assume you have the right to control your daughter's life and end it if she stands up to you.
You're right, many of these are big fucking problems. Many of them are, in isolation, quite small. But they don't exist in isolation. And we need to worry about what they are doing to other people and to the world. the impact on our daughters and our sons, about the culture that enables it and yes, about the women who are affected.
If we don't worry about them, who will?
