This has been started in response to the massacre and anti women manifesto by Elliot Rodgers. Makes for interesting reading...

'No, different context. You accused women on here of being hysterical, meaning either context 1 or 2. I meant extremely funny or context 3. But, as I said, you know this'

You do realize that context cannot be interpreted when people are communicating via text speak only?

The 'context' of many of my posts have been misinterpreted on here themselves.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:47

'you come across as dismissive of other opinions and very hostile if yours are questioned or challenged.'

Every other poster is also like this. They are extremely rude to anyone who doesn't hold the standard radicalised views of the main posters on this forum.

' you must be living in a parallel universe if you think men don't feel they have a right to women's bodies and greatly objectify women,'

What the hell? When did I say I think this? I stated a man merely desiring sex is considered entitled and it seems you do think that. That is disgraceful and to be honest with opinions like that no wonder this forum and the views on it are so fringe.

I don't agree, the desire to have sex is a totally normal biological function and tbh I take offence to people stating that my DP by default of being a man and having a sex drive feels 'entitled' to women's bodies. He definately does not.

I know there are lots of men who do truly feel entitled to women's bodies, however I will not ever extend this to all men or make the sweeping very offensive generalization that merely having a sex drive and desiring sex mean's one feels 'entitled to others bodies'.

I have male friends who havnt had sex for years and despite saying they'd like it, it would be nice if it happened they don't have any 'entitlement' to it whatsoever.

ReallyFuckingFedUp · 29/05/2014 15:46

t just felt very wrong, although the message is spot on could have been done in a less, 'listen to my issues' kind of way.

That comment just seems kind of apt, because women are constantly told not to make a fuss. Not to do anything in a way to draw attention to ourselves. SO when women do finally make their voices heard people think they should do it in a less obvious way :(

If my child had been a victim I'd want the word spread far and wide to stop others being hurt.

JassyRadlett · 29/05/2014 15:38

Honey, the thing with having opinions is that people are allowed to challenge them. That's one of my favourite things about some parts of Mumsnet - the fact that it's a forum to challenge opinions, assumptions and beliefs. There are plenty of threads that have made me think or changed my mind, but I'm open to having my mind changed.

In my conversations with you across two threads this week, you come across as dismissive of other opinions and very hostile if yours are questioned or challenged. That may not be your intent - but it's how you're coming across to me.

On your last post - you must be living in a parallel universe if you think men don't feel they have a right to women's bodies and greatly objectify women, on a much greater scale than the other way around. But why keep bringing it up, anyway? No one here has been saying that one is fine, and the other not, unless I've missed some posts? No one here is that anyone wanting sex is bad - it's when their desire for sex, or affection, or attention, or whatever, is deemed by them more important than the other person's desire to not have that behaviour visited upon them?

At any rate this issue is not limited to sexual behaviours by a long shot.

hys·ter·i·cal (h?-st?r??-k?l)
adj.

  1. Of, characterized by, or arising from hysteria.
  2. Having or prone to having hysterics.
  3. Informal Extremely funny: told a hysterical story.

No, different context. You accused women on here of being hysterical, meaning either context 1 or 2. I meant extremely funny or context 3. But, as I said, you know this.

I am not a hypocrite. I'm not sure what you are, however.

I wonder however if you might be able to bundle your posts into 1 post? It means that more people other than you can comment before a thread runs out, and makes it much easier to follow the thread. It tends to be considered good etiquette on MN if you do, thanks. Grin

His views were formed by those around him and his experiences. Dismissing him as isolated means you don't need to look at those influences that made him think it was OK to demand access to women's bodies and kill people because he didn't get what he wanted.

THIS

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:36

'" Said no-one on here. Ever.'

This impression is seriously given off. It matters none that no one said it, its obvious that that is what many posters on here truly believe.

A man even mentioning that they'd like sex with attractive women is considered entitled and someone who believes he has rights to women's bodies.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:35

'No he wasn't isolated.'

Anyone who knew him said he was isolated. He never talked to or socialized with anyone. That is isolated.

Its not 'dismissing' him as isolated, its stating that along with being a raging misogynist influenced by society, he was also an isolated individual. Why keep denying this? It doesn't take away from the fact that he was a misogynist.

Its like you will not accept that any other factors other than misogyny influenced this at all, when near enough everyone on the planet except feminists on this forum agree that there were other factors. His social isolation was one of them.

scallopsrgreat · 29/05/2014 15:33

"it seems some posters on here consider a man merely desiring to have sex (not bullying, coercing, forcing it but merely desiring and wanting it) or fancying attractive women as having 'an entitlement to women's bodies'." Said no-one on here. Ever.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:32

'different context,'

Oh yes, a 'different context' in the sense I was describing someone's opinion and so were you.

You are a hypocrite.

scallopsrgreat · 29/05/2014 15:32

No he wasn't isolated. His views were formed by those around him and his experiences. Dismissing him as isolated means you don't need to look at those influences that made him think it was OK to demand access to women bodies and kill people because he didn't get what he wanted.

"The two arn't mutually exclusive you know" Yep. That's the whole point!

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:30

Disregarding Rodger who did have a sense of entitlement, it seems some posters on here consider a man merely desiring to have sex (not bullying, coercing, forcing it but merely desiring and wanting it) or fancying attractive women as having 'an entitlement to women's bodies'.

Why is it women are allowed to desire sex, they are allowed to discuss attractive men but if a man does hes entitled and feels he has a right to women's bodies? Many men do want and desire sex but they at the same time accept they don't have any entitlement to it.

You would honestly think that a man having a sex drive at all is wrong, entitled and perverted on here.

CaptChaos · 29/05/2014 15:29

22honey.... different context, but you know that.

Unless.....

nevermind.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:26

'He wasn't isolated. '

Yes he was...do you even know what isolated means? You really just ruin your own arguments coming out with rubbish like this.

Its not incorrect that 'he lived in a society that condones and minimises misogyny' but it is incorrect to say that he wasn't isolated. The two arn't mutually exclusive you know, and it seems his social isolation was part of the problem why he was so bitter.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:22

' it's hysterical'

I was torn to pieces on this board only the other day for saying various opinions sounded hysterical. Yet its ok for you to describe another woman as so? Why is that, because you consider her less worthy because she holds different views to you?

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:20

'Yes. I think, true or not, enough allowances have been made for the prostitution back story. Clearly, one would do well to remember that past abuse does not make one a flawed saint. '

I don't think anyone has suggested it makes them a saint, or that it makes everything they say 100% correct. Posters on here could do well to remember not everyone holds the same opinion and infact every persons views are affected by their own personal experiences.

As it is, this forum really puts me off the 'concept' of feminism as too many 'feminists' on here hold ridiculously radicalised views that really wouldn't be taken seriously by a large section of society. Even I, who do hold feminist views, am slated on here for not being what is really a 100% man hater. Thats what a lot of you are on here.

I imagine many other women have felt the same way as me. However, women are allowed to hold their own opinions with regards to feminism and they shouldn't be belittled just because these don't fall into line with the majority.

CaptChaos · 29/05/2014 15:20

Mengog, if you don't believe the misogyny displayed by Elliot Rodger and the misogyny displayed by men in everyday situations is connected, can you say where the disconnect comes?

slug There is one blog on We Hunted the Mammoth's blog roll called The Thinking Housewife. It's fucking hilarious, she and her very few cronies are so insular it's hysterical. She does hate women though, which is a real shame.

22honey · 29/05/2014 15:15

' still think you're incredibly obnoxious and ill informed and like most people who haven't got anything of value to say... awfully loud about saying nothing at all.'

Thats your opinion....I disagree. Next?

Mengog, I suggest you follow the links on the blogrool at We Hunted the mammoth (there are 42 of them, each a large site with many contributors) then come back and tell us that he was an isolated person with isolated views.

scallopsrgreat · 29/05/2014 14:56

He wasn't isolated. He lives in a society that condones and minimises misogyny. He got his sense of entitlement (at least in part) from society. The #YesAllWomen hashtag is showing how prevalent the attitudes he displayed are. It is a continuum, obviously. But men showing a sense of entitlement and crossing women's boundaries is the common theme

Mengog · 29/05/2014 14:47

I believe he is an isolated person with isolated views. He believed sex was evil and that because sex gives life, life itself is flawed. He believed he should be the supreme ruler of the world and woman should be put in camps and forced to breed. Those who cannot should be starved to death.

Yes a hatred of women is something that isn't isolated. However, neither is a hatred of Muslims, or British foreign policy - it doesn't mean that Anders Breivik or the 7/7 bombers are not isolated regarding their actions.

I think the Yesallwomen hashtag has been good in raising awareness. I just don't believe the link between what this male did and some of the actions outlined on twitter are connected.

JassyRadlett · 29/05/2014 10:24

Brighteyed, but in the context of institutional misogyny, what's wrong with 'listen to my issues' when those issues are generally ignored or accepted?

I get what you're saying, but to me this isn't about seeking equivalence with those murdered, at all. It's about speaking up about the scale of the problem to underline that this is not an isolated person with isolated views.

brighteyedbusytailed · 29/05/2014 09:38

I actually found it very distasteful, surely some kind of tribute to the dead would have been more appropriate,
Someone of those tweets are about being harassed etc which is unpleasant of course, but not quite in the same category as being massacred in cold blood in the middle of the street. It just felt very wrong, although the message is spot on could have been done in a less, 'listen to my issues' kind of way.

I know this may have some people foaming but you can't have a discussion without differing viewpoints.

AnyFucker · 29/05/2014 09:29

Cormorant ? Wtf,, autocorrect

For important, that was meant to be

I bet Moya never had this problem. I obviously need to work harder on this quotable soundbite business....
