I was just looking on the River Island site and saw they also sell this novelty "Grow your own girlfriend gift". No 1 reason why you have to have her? "She never has a headache!" Shock

Grow your own girlfriend

I'm actually quite shocked by it. Such horrible misogyny presented as novelty. It's horrible. Sad

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 07/05/2014 17:52

i think we may have collective denial about what is considered funny or acceptable at the moment. i have a horrible feeling many people (/men?) would think it was funny.

i googled the product to see who makes it but found these gems:

www.funslurp.com/hear-no-evil-instant-nag-relief

and once more
www.diabolicalgifts.com/product/anti-nag-gag

LoveSardines · 07/05/2014 17:42

I am also a bit boggled that anyone would spend £4 on this.

Apart from the fact that's it's preposterously sexist, I can't imagine they'd actually make much money out of it.

It's a visual joke, right, it would make sense as a cartoon or something, not something you would actually buy.

Just really weird.

Curious as to what gender designed it/gave it green light.

AnyFucker · 07/05/2014 17:04

Drat! The jeans were good Sad

EEasterChick · 07/05/2014 16:25

River Island also sell a nork shaped beach ball advertised by a woman asking if the "Boys wanna play with my boobie?" And an "Irish accent mouth spray". Yes AnyFucker I think it's time to source the jeans elsewhere.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 07/05/2014 15:03

YouAreMyFavourite - I suspect it was aimed at being a "humorous" gift for male football fans (as the gag piece is a football), as the World Cup is coming up, so of course football will be overtaking TVs up and down the country in the summer months.

And of course, that automatically means women will be nagging about all the football, because woman can't like football and want to watch it themselves!!

ballsballsballs · 07/05/2014 14:54

It'd be a very unfunny present, perhaps for a stag do. Sigh.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 07/05/2014 14:45

typo:
I mean is it a funny bday present for a female partner? = I mean is it a 'funny' bday present for a female partner?

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 07/05/2014 14:44

who was the target market for this product

I mean is it a funny bday present for a female partner?
is it a stag gift?

I am trying to figure under what normal circumstances anyone would buy this item?

BomChickaMeowMeow · 07/05/2014 13:45

I haven't read the Metro article but I read a list of the "Women's sexual complaints" list in a link shared by a friend on Facebook and read it from a feminist perspective of the shit women put up with from sexual partners.

turtleback · 07/05/2014 13:35

Oh right tess, that great feminist film Hmm

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 07/05/2014 13:28

Turtle - it's from The Wolf of Wall Street.

ezinma · 07/05/2014 13:28

Me too, Buffy, albeit the Metro is a newspaper only in the sense that you get all the news you pay for.

Is it feminist to show a woman pushing a man away with a shoe? In an article about how she would prefer not to be anally raped? I belvie the photo is meant to be illustrating her pushing him away because she doesn't want to be assaulted (or sexually annoyed as it's phrased in the article).

Also what film is that pic from? hopefully not from his last misogynistic pile of shit.

Anyway I thought MN was going to start getting rid of goady fuckers who think women being offended by anal rape are sexist

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 07/05/2014 12:09

that should say "has feminism* cost some women their sense of humor."

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 07/05/2014 12:08

Why did I read some of the comments on Twitter about the River Island gag thing, because mixed in with those outraged by the products, are of course the inevitable anti-feminist tweets, anti-women tweets, and we can't forget the "it's just a bit of banter" tweets.

I saw one which said something like, "has feminist cost some women their sense of humor?" And the tweet was by a woman.

Heaven bloody help us.

MarieNE · 07/05/2014 12:05

Last time I shop with them

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 07/05/2014 11:25

River Island now added to my black list for life. Appalling. I will be talking this over with DDs too.

scallopsrgreat · 07/05/2014 11:21

Well I'm still happy for you that you can dismiss DV so easily GentlemenJ. You are fortunate.

No Scallop I was referring to the River Island product. The Metro article is vile.
