www.standard.co.uk/news/london/end-humiliating-game-of-taking-photos-of-women-eating-on-the-tube-9243220.html

I am not sure it is lawful if it is of one woman where she has a reasonable expectation of privacy.

I've only looked at a few pics on there, but there is a pic of one guy eating as well despite the name of the group

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:02

The point is that if it were people eating on the tube it would be one thing, as many people find others eating stinky food offensive and there are signs up saying not to do it. Although I can't imagine that anyone gets too het up over someone eating something which is not messy or smelly TBH.

The fact that it is women eating on the tube makes it creepy. You're sitting there minding your own business and you have a malteaser and someone takes a photo because you are a woman eating and puts it up on the net. Not great at all. And especially as girls and women are subjected generally to enough scrutiny and commentary while just going about their daily business in a way that men are not, we don't need even more things added FGS.

scallopsrgreat · 11/04/2014 13:58

I don't think Jane is saying it isn't a bad thing. Just that the impact on men as a class is not the same as women as a class as there isn't the history of objectification of men as there is of women.

It still comes down to why only women? Why does he think it is OK to photograph women minding their own business?

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 13:58

If it's any consolation insults or judgmental comments of any sort on the Facebook group aren't allowed on the photos. And there's a strict rule about no minors being allowed in the photos (even in the background).

The comments generally seem to be about the actual food being consumed rather than the person eating it.

NurseyWursey · 11/04/2014 12:31

Fat women? Where did you get that from? The women aren't fat Confused

So basically you're saying if this happens to men it's not a bad thing, but for women it is?

DownstairsMixUp · 11/04/2014 12:20

I don't really understand the point in it?!

JaneinReading · 11/04/2014 12:16

I would argue you have an expectation of privacy when you eat on the tube and the courts held that was the case in a decision about JK Rowling's child (on a public street in a buggy) (and indeed the Duchess of Cambridge's breasts). Obviously it could be touch and go if that rule would be applied or not but you could well breach the Data Protection Act 1998. It is different from taking a film of football supporters or shoppers shopping at Christmas. Individual photos often do need consent. It is not a straight forward legal issue.

As for why I feel pictures of fat women eating on tubes taken by men on the whole with a page called women eating on tubes is different from the men in red trousers page it's because of the way women are subjected to much more abuse for how they look and are in public spaces than men are. It is not a gender neutral issue. I accept Eric Pickles is often pictured with food etc but there is definitely more comments made by men about women in public all the time, day by day. My sons have never ever had anyone shout anything out about them when they go cycling - I asked the other day. I always get it.

I just checked and it's still there.

It isn't just men taking photos btw- a lot of uploaders are female.

And there's no reason for it to be taken down, it isn't illegal (come on how much privacy can you "reasonably" really expect on public transport in London or NY?), it isn't violent and there isn't any nudity.

Anyway I can't help but notice a lot of the food being consumed is of the unhealthy sort.

wigglybeezer · 11/04/2014 08:32

I have just listened to him justifying it as he is an " artist ".

There are many reasons why this type of thing is wrong, the simplistic argument is that it is just extremely bad manners.

sarine1 · 11/04/2014 08:24

Yay! Facebook have taken this down -the rather pompous initiator is on Radio 4 now!

NurseyWursey · 10/04/2014 17:10

Agree with complex what a ridiculous comparison.

It is about men wanting to poke fun at women in a public space and humiliate them

No it isn't. Have you even been on the page? The women are more seen in awe, not took the piss out of or humiliated.

It isn't different to men in red trousers though is it, how come that is funny to you but this isn't?

JaneinReading · 10/04/2014 17:03

Yes, I meant analogous too, thin end of wedge. It is about men wanting to poke fun at women in a public space and humiliate them.

The reason it feels different from the website of men in red trousers (which is quite funny) is because of the gender issue.

Women in public spaces have problems all over the planet and particularyl on tube trains. They even need women only carriages because of all the bottom pinching etc in I think it was Japan or might have been Egypt.

In fairness OP did say has a feel of not 'is the same as', which I read as suggesting this is the thin end of a wedge where a group comments on women's normal human behaviour (eating) in a way that they do not do to men. Give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile sort of thing.

To me (daily tube commuter) it is an odd thing to point out, let alone take a picture of - lots of people eat on the tube amongst other activities. London seems to move at a different pace to everywhere else I've lived and so normal activities (eating, getting ready, watching TV, sleeping etc) happen at unusual times and in some cases spill over into tube-time. Because of that I suspect fetishism here rather than bullying.

I'd be narked if anyone took a photo of me and stuck it on a Facebook group page for any reason though.

It certainly has a feel of the religious police in Saudi, Iran and under the Taliban where men are out there watching women to tell them off if their headscarf has slipped a little bit back, if a piece of hair is showing and if their ankle can be seen.

No it bloody well doesn't! How can you equate the state sponsored repression of a nation's entire female population with the idiotic and nasty antics of a few blokes on the tube.

Comparing it to the religious police in SA is distorting, disproportional and, in my view, disrespectful to the real struggle many women have on a day to day basis.

JaneinReading · 09/04/2014 14:32

It won't stop there though, will it? Next it will be people (that happen to all be women) that eat lunch in a cafe or at a picnic. Because as everyone knows, women should not eat full stop.

If I got hold of that guy I would ram food down his bloody throat until he chocked, then photographed it, pasted it on the web and would say, "Disgusting, he can't even eat food properly".

RiaOverTheRainbow · 08/04/2014 23:09

Fair enough Em, I must have seen different pictures.

SandorCleganeIsInnocent · 08/04/2014 21:52

How bizarre. I'm always paranoid people are looking at me and judging...turns out they probably are Hmm It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

As an aside, I read the link and the article seemed quite balanced, even supportive, gently outraged then there was an article to the side about female slebs inviting you to judge who's dressed like a 'dog's dinner'.

Head. Wall. Bang.

If women were as likely as men to sit with their knees so far apart that they took up two passengers' worth of space I'd agree with you.

Childrenofthestones · 08/04/2014 20:46

No, apparently it wasnt at all creepy to take secret photos of men with their legs apart.

How bizarre, and weird!

If they'd started a People Who Eat One The Tube page then that would be odd enough but specifically women, just weird.

NiceTabard · 08/04/2014 20:11

Just the women though, obviously. Men should be allowed to do what they like, free of censure.
