Seems Mums don't play with Lego...

...at least not according to one of this week's MN competitions Hmm

Let Dad relax and have some fun, quality time with the kids. Grab a box of LEGO and see where their imaginations take them. With the LEGO brick you can build anything your imagination desires, as the latest TV ad from LEGO shows.

LEGO has been covering playroom floors since 1949 and today it is still the number one kids construction toy. So popular is LEGO worldwide, that there are now 80 LEGO bricks to every person in the world! Why not challenge Dads and kids to see what they could build with 80 LEGO Bricks?

To celebrate the joy of LEGO, four Mumsnetters can win a LEGO Build & Play Box. The children are going to love it and Dad's will feel a sense of childhood nostalgia as they get back to playtime basics and build with the kids.

If Dad's are after some building inspiration, check out the latest TV ad from LEGO, tissues at the ready.

I mean, really? Are single mums allowed to enter, or is having a Dad in the house mandatory?

My DB loves Lego, would buy extortionately expensive sets for DS (who has ASD and Lego was his 'thing' for ages), just so that he could build them for with him.

The hideous family secret is that all the Lego he played with as a child was bought for me, by my Dad. It was only after he left that DB was given it. Maybe my 'D'M felt I would grow a penis, or not be able to 'catch' a nice husband if I could construct a bridge out of plastic building blocks?

This competition blurb sucks, BTW.

As do the apostrophes!

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 15/11/2013 19:56

I am intrigued by the idea of being "good at lego". What constitutes being good at lego? You either like lego or you don't. As it happens, I do. I also like drinking, swearing, arguing and being competitive. Fuck you and your gender stereotypes, lego bastards

southeastastra · 15/11/2013 19:54

i love lego dp hates it and i was in the lego club when i was little and i won a lego design competition in the express.

am most miffed

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 15/11/2013 19:52

OTOH - in advertising world 'Mums' literally do everything else: wash clothes, make packed lunches, go to Iceland, take their kids to school, buy food and toys, do the housework, take kids to the doctor, look after them when sick etc etc.

But hey Mums, you're worth it, you're irreplaceable, you're one of a kind, you're special - who else could do what you do? I mean WHO ELSE?

samandi · 15/11/2013 19:45

Who the fuck wrote that? "Dads" does not need an apostrophe. It doesn't need to be capitalised either. And "kids construction toys" should have an apostrophe. Christ. But that's by the by. The whole premise that it's only "Dad's" who play with Lego would have me spitting fury if I was a mother. What a godawful piece of shite.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 15/11/2013 19:43

I do all the Lego in our house - before I had my own DC, I spent every Christmas building my nephews' Lego sets. I grew up in a house of 3 girls that was full of Lego. This gendering of it is a recent and unwanted development.

elskovs · 15/11/2013 19:43

Im shit a lego too, my husband plays with it with the boys. Its the only game he enjoys playing. He is a structural engineer and builds the most amazing things.

IsItMeOr · 15/11/2013 19:39

This is the only good thing I have seen built with the wretched Lego Friends.

EduCated · 15/11/2013 19:39

tribpot They let you have a VIP card Shock you lied, didn't you, and told them you have testicles?

FFS - DP takes one look at Lego and shrugs, he hasn't got a fecking clue what to do with it! Me on the other hand - accredited expert on playing with the stuff. DP suggested buying Lego for Xmas the other day but said he wasn't sure whether it should be a present for dd or me Grin. He's far better at playing Sylvanians (with dd, he draws the line at playing it on his own) whereas they and the HOURS it takes to go on a simple Sylvanian camping holiday give me the rage.

How sexist! Go on then MN, give my DP a tub of Lego then, see how relaxed he is when dd is asking for 50 new combinations of minifigure and a complex half-bridge half- skyscraper structure!

tribpot · 15/11/2013 19:32

Can you fire a PR firm twice? Once for crimes against grammar and once for crimes against humanity.

I've had to do Lego at work (on a training course). Would you believe it - no extra time was given for the women to complete this task, despite our apparent physical limitations! Shock

I have a Lego VIP card, btw.

Pachacuti · 15/11/2013 19:30

Girls (as a subset of "kids") are seemingly allowed to play with Lego, so it can't be that penises are specifically required. My theory is that it's something to do with menstruation that prevents you being able to operate Lego, although my pretty little head is too full of embroidery and kittens to work out what it might be. Perhaps I should email Lego and ask them to explain in simple words with diagrams?

EduCated · 15/11/2013 19:27

Btw, I reported my post to bring it to MNHQ's attention.

And yes, I double checked that apostrophe!

This is shit. I love lego. So does DH. I'm really disappointed in mumsnet over this, even if they didn't write it, they've published it/condoned it :(

MurderOfGoths · 15/11/2013 19:07

That is really shit.

K8Middleton · 15/11/2013 19:05

Penises are not even any good at unsticking lego bricks. You need hands and fingers, and last time I look, even girls and women have them.

Too right!

smearedinfood · 15/11/2013 19:05

DH tells everyone the Lego is really just for me. It's true.

Should I not be entering? (I really like Lego!)

EduCated · 15/11/2013 18:49

Unfortunately I'd entered the competition without properly reading the crap, so only noticed it afterwards. Now I count towards their numbers Hmm

MumThatPlaysWithLego · 15/11/2013 18:48

Hurrah! This NN wasn't taken, I'm off to enter the competition!

Just done a quick estimate, half of the DCs lego is newish, the other half was inherited from me!

And spaceships are sooo much better than the Friends stuff, Lego have their heads up their 1950s arses with this.

DiamondDoris · 15/11/2013 18:48

I play with my children's lego AND on my own! And DD is fantastic at it, much better than DS. That's a disturbing piece of shitty writing. I hope no one enters that competition.

5madthings · 15/11/2013 18:45

I love Lego and frequently buy sets for my kids that I want for myself, I am listing after the ewok treehouse set at the moment bit at £200! I won't be getting it :(

EduCated · 15/11/2013 18:43

YY, Dangling it's a gorgeous advert, but with everything else they're doing at the moment! it does leave a bit of a bad taste knowing its unlikely the lack of females was unintentional or coincidental.

bundaberg I'm sorry, I promise not to do it again
