Join me, if you will, in envisaging the feminist pub

Inspired by the obvious thread, I feel we need a fictional pub that's as the same sort of mecca for feminists. The antidote to the classic sexist bloke pub, where the floor is sticky and you can't get to the bar without pushing past three Important Regulars peering at your boobs and making blonde jokes, while the barman asks 'are you sure' when you order real ale and the beer for ladies comes in comedy funny-shaped pint glasses for our wee delicate hands.

In the feminist pub, I want to outlaw stupid jokes, obviously. But I also think the bar needs to be at a height that doesn't put my boobs on pint-level for every bloke there. And I would like it if there were etiquette that, when you've got your pint, you don't sit chatting to the barman and taking up space, you move away (I have never seen a woman sit on the edge of a bar, alone).

And I fancy copies of classics like 'Letters from a fainthearted feminist' standing about dog-earned on the bookcases, in place of old back issues of Spectator or random leather-bound books by dead white men.

Shall I apply for a pub lease then? And what else do we want in the feminist pub?

I would definitely be working behind the bar, though, if not for disability.
Can I be a sort of sitting-down host? Please!

stubbornstains · 18/09/2013 15:29

I like the odd token male chauvinist pig propping the bar up, to be honest. Even better if they're unwise enough to say something inappropriate. Nothing gives me the thirst for a pint like the smell of fresh blood.

Doombar, since you ask Grin

garlicbaguette · 18/09/2013 15:28

Most pubs are feminist when I'm in there. I must be more terrifying than I thought!

Also, I'm taller than Ms Average so your low bar will irritate me in the minor, but ever-present, manner of kitchen worktops. Oh, well. I'm definitely up for the comfy smoking area, though ... come to think of it, all the pubs I frequent have one already; maybe they're undercover feminist pubs?!

Consider me a regular, but without input Grin

VisualiseAHorse · 18/09/2013 15:28

Being 5 foot, I would like a bar that doesn't make me feel about 11 when I stand at it.

And chairs I can actually reach to sit on.

(Realise that this is not a woman's issue, but a short persons one)

She is welcome to the lot of them. I've no place to put my fancy china because my presses are full of DH's speciality beer glasses.

Not irony, the truth. the only irony is that i posted it on a feminist thread.

Hullygully · 18/09/2013 15:19

Send one to Buffy

SinisterSal · 18/09/2013 15:16

Our house is FULL of those Hoegaarden glasses. For erm...some reason...

Funny to see DD (6) slurping her water out of it. It's massive in her hands

Hullygully · 18/09/2013 15:03

No, we'd have to import them to get the real thing. I want to be called "Ma'am" while my ice cold fizzy wine is poured.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 18/09/2013 15:03

Will wine-drinkers be allowed in? I don't like beer but will yield to noone in my excessive consumption of Pinot Grigio. (On that subject, I
would love a pub with a greater choice than "red or white, luv?" like my local).

Soft play sounds brilliant, with some one paid to supervise it (and lift the children with short legs over the obstacles so I don't have to do it, thereby defeating the whole point) and situated well away from us drinkers.

And books - definitely books - 'Cinderella Ate my Daughter' for starters, and some light reading too.

I hope you took him back the next day, tethers.

I once borrowed a cowboy from a pub in London Bridge.

I realise that isn't necessarily femininst, but I do like a cowboy.

Hullygully · 18/09/2013 14:26

Could we have cowboys working behind the bar?

Hullygully · 18/09/2013 14:25

Fizzy wine that is freezing cold. You can keep your beers and ales. Interesting conversation. Comfortable chairs. No loud music so I can't hear.

Thank you.

EldritchCleavage · 18/09/2013 14:21

Have to have lounge bar (no music) and saloon bar (with music).

libertarianj · 18/09/2013 14:20

some nice selections of ales there and I do share your liking of Hoegaarden Buffy too, although i am not seeing it served in many pubs these days Sad. I remember it used to be really expensive, even 10 years ago it was like £4 a pint or something. Those Hoegaarden glasses were legendary:

big glass

oh and a jukebox is essential, but it does have to be turned up to a reasonable loudness, otherwise it seems like a waste of money.

tethersend · 18/09/2013 14:06

No...no jukebox?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/09/2013 13:53

I'd rather have no music at all to be honest, background music in public places is a pet hate of mine.

Hogsback TEA for me. Don't mind whether I stand at the bar or sit at a table, definitely the latter with friends, but if just with one other person a sofa is fine. The main thing is that you can talk to everyone you are with without having to yell.

MooncupGoddess · 18/09/2013 13:33

I hate loud music, it makes it impossible to have a proper rant argument about the patriarchy.

Am fond of Adnams, especially Ghost Ship and Spindrift.

well you have got have a bit of edginess/ character to a place, maybe not fighting and all that, but definitely crank the music up. Also what's with this sitting down on comfy seats malarkey. You should be stood at the bar sinking the beers Grin and that's just being fussy with regards to the toilets.

Loads of us have mentioned ale above lib. Keep up!

Confused yeah i know that's why i asked what what everyone's favourite ale was
