Join me, if you will, in envisaging the feminist pub

Inspired by the obvious thread, I feel we need a fictional pub that's as the same sort of mecca for feminists. The antidote to the classic sexist bloke pub, where the floor is sticky and you can't get to the bar without pushing past three Important Regulars peering at your boobs and making blonde jokes, while the barman asks 'are you sure' when you order real ale and the beer for ladies comes in comedy funny-shaped pint glasses for our wee delicate hands.

In the feminist pub, I want to outlaw stupid jokes, obviously. But I also think the bar needs to be at a height that doesn't put my boobs on pint-level for every bloke there. And I would like it if there were etiquette that, when you've got your pint, you don't sit chatting to the barman and taking up space, you move away (I have never seen a woman sit on the edge of a bar, alone).

And I fancy copies of classics like 'Letters from a fainthearted feminist' standing about dog-earned on the bookcases, in place of old back issues of Spectator or random leather-bound books by dead white men.

Shall I apply for a pub lease then? And what else do we want in the feminist pub?

There would be ore female toilets than male ones.

(I know a university that runs a course on bathrooms as part of a degree in gender studies. There is a LOT that can be discovered about a society based on the state of the toilets.)

garlicbaguette · 20/09/2013 22:04

I don't think anyone suggested only the women's toilets would be clean - or even whether toilets would be separated by gender?

I want a high bit of the bar because I'm taller than the average woman. I don't want all the bar to be high, because the average woman's shorter than me.

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2013 22:03

It's called being in a pub which suits you...exactly!! Clean toilets are not a feminist issue.

Seriously, you can't see the misandry, on this thread, but you think bars should be 5 inches lower?

Go through the tread, reverse everything, and then think again.

The toilets would be clean??? Because men are all scuzzy and don't wan't clean toilets?

Who do you think cleans the toilets and messes them up??????

I don't claim to be feminist....but weirdly I am married to the biggest feminist ever. (I put it down to driving too much for work and listening to womans hour Grin). DH thinks MN is a load of pants, but if he didn't I'd have him on here telling you exactly why this feminist pub thread is a load of twaddle. If he ever read it, I think he would be pretty offended.

garlicbaguette · 20/09/2013 21:42

You lost me, Lynette. That's a shame because I was feeling like the only tall, alone-at-the-bar-drinking woman here.

We shall just have to lean side by side, at the tall end of the bar, not speaking to each other while you observe misandry in places I can't see.
You can share my lighter, though.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 20/09/2013 21:40

The bar has a high area and a lowered area. Different sides.

Ah good, someone who is drinking alcohol. I can live vicariously. I'll get in the drinks and we'll sit together when the comic comes on eh?

And the stools too, presumably.

And who said "clean toilets"? Do men actually use the ladies toilets in pubs? Do men not appreciate clean toilets?

A thread full of such misandry on the feminism board.....and don't come the "tongue in cheek" answer with me.

Most of my post on MN are tongue in cheek. Seriously, I am Hmm at this thread.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 20/09/2013 21:19

I'm tall, I don't. Maybe it could have steps in it or something.

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2013 21:18

So many people want the bar lowered by 5 inches. Hmm

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 20/09/2013 21:14

Oh I don't care who chats who up. I'm very married. I'll just stay out the way with my tonic.

I'll sit with you at the bar though.

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2013 21:12

There must be an area where you go to be chatted up.

Er, no......the women do the chatting up thanks.....

I live in a bloody parallel universe, don't I. Hmm

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2013 21:09

I' sitting at the bar wearing a miniskirt and DMs....am I fucking with the feminist etiquette?

LynetteScavo · 20/09/2013 21:06

(I have never seen a woman sit on the edge of a bar, alone).

I used to do this a lot when you were allowed to smoke at the bar. Siting in the corner was not my style.

And I don't drink pints, but if I did I wouldn't care about the shape of the glass. -Beer never quite hits the spot as the alcohol volume is too low--

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 20/09/2013 21:02

Oooh, difficult one. You may need a better pub conversationalist than me. I'm on a minor sugar high from all the maltesers.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 20/09/2013 20:56

I'm not a gate crasher! I am enjoying a glass of wine though, and so also neither use not ornament in the sparkling conversation department.

DD got very good grades in her tests last term. (I mean 5 A*s, then of As and Bs and 2 or 3 Cs.) She threw the report card at me saying 'I don't want to talk about it, they're terrible.' Tried to tell her I think they're great and I'm really proud of her, but she's having none of if and 'Won't talk about it until tomorrow.'

There. That is my pub banter for the evening. a feminist conundrum if you will. How do you encourage a lass who is having none of it? beats me!

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 20/09/2013 20:28

It has improved somewhat. The kids are in bed and I have a family size bag of maltesers. Grin

Would love something stronger but am sadly officially 'off the gin' (OliviaMN style) until spring.
