Needless to say MRAs are throwing abuse at her on MRA sites Angry

What if the man had cut out in front of her?

kim - that she posted about them is a minor issue in the grand scheme of things she's done. It's the speeding, the tailgating, the hitting people and driving off, and the use of her mobile whilst driving (doing 95 mph at times) which is getting her into trouble.

TheYamiOfYawn · 12/06/2013 15:27

I think it's quite interesting in other ways, as violence against cyclists is often reported in a very similar way to sexual violence, with a huge amount of victim blaming, responsibility being given to potential victims to take fairly extreme steps to ensure their safety, the behaviour of a minority of cyclists being taken as representative of all and a general culture in which a white man in a suit behind the wheel is "normal" and anyone who is harmed by him must in some way be to blame.

DP didn't really get a lot of feminism at a deep gut level until he started reading cycling infrastructure blogs and getting activisty, and then he started understanding my analyses of power dynamics.

I really hope she looses her license if the below is true:

ipayroadtax.com/no-such-thing-as-road-tax/i-knocked-a-cyclist-off-his-bike-i-have-right-of-way-he-doesnt-even-pay-road-tax/

"The police had been alerted to Emma May?s comments by twitter users shocked at her lack of compassion and her unbidden hate. She was quickly identified from her Facebook page and the police were sent other examples of her poor driving: she had taken twitter-available pix of herself tailgating other motorists, and even photographed her speedometer showing a speed of 95mph."

"Social media has a lot to answer for."

No, Kim147, I think you will find it is the idiots who post stupid things that have a lot to answer for.

TolliverGroat · 12/06/2013 14:37

What do you mean by "the way it has been handled"?

WidowWadman · 12/06/2013 14:37

If I was cynical, I'd say it's an interesting first post.

PatPig · 12/06/2013 14:25

This story is weeks old. Why are you posting about it now?

This woman has surely not been subjected to as much abuse as this man:

www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/apr/28/cyclist-regrets-posting-video-road-rage-attack

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 12/06/2013 14:15

Yes, I am surprised. Confused

I don't get your point.

Violence is gendered. If a man is violent to a woman, yes, that's typical of the wider dynamics of violence. I'm not sure why you think it's odd to say that.

The fact that this isn't representative of the wider gendered dynamic of violence doesn't excuse this woman in the slightest.

Childrenofthestones · 12/06/2013 14:12

If this had been a man that knocked a woman off a bike, left her in the road and drove off, only to boast and laugh about it later online, would
you not be going for him accusing him of being typical of the violence against women by men. The fact that he could treat her like shit and drive away laughing about it?
Some mra's are arseholes just like some feminists are arseholes. But are you surprised that so many of them are livid with her and the way it has been handled?

TheSmallClanger · 12/06/2013 14:10

For once, I don't think this is a really gendered issue. She did something dangerous and unpleasant and bragged about it, and is now feeling the backlash. I think a man would be treated the same way, apart from on MRA boards of course.

TolliverGroat · 12/06/2013 14:05

And what malenky said too -- she isn't doing the classic "woman driver" stereotype at all (insofar as her driving may have been bad, it's in more of a stereotypically "male" fashion) and I've not seen her sex brought up in any mainstream forums or comments.

TolliverGroat · 12/06/2013 14:03

Yes, I really don't think she's being judged differently (except on the MRA boards, but then they lost touch with reality some time ago) because she's a woman. She's being judged for being a gender-neutral asshat.

I think it's quite likely that she's being given more of a platform to repeatedly appear trying to give "her side of the story" because she's young and female and conventionally attractive, mind you. But that ought to be an advantage (as it is, every time she opens her mouth she shows such a spectacular lack of awareness of what it was she did wrong that she's rather wasting the opportunity).

edam · 12/06/2013 14:01

MRAs really are scraping the barrel if they are trying to make this an anti-feminist thing. So a woman does something wrong, what the hell does that have to do with discrimination? If she'd hit another woman, would that have been OK? Are we only allowed equal rights if no woman ever does anything wrong?

What a pile of tosh.

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 12/06/2013 14:00

Me either.

She's actually playing up to the opposite of the stereotype of a woman driver, if she's complaining about other cars being slow and taking pride in being aggressive and dangerous. She's being utterly irresponsible and stupid with it, but the stereotype she's acting out isn't 'woman driver' IMO.

WidowWadman · 12/06/2013 13:57

But is she judged for being a 'woman driver' or for being an asshats who uses her mobile while driving, feels entitled over other road users and actively endangers them?

I don't think a man would be judged any less for this kind of behaviour.

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 12/06/2013 13:55

Yeah, I agree with goblin.

She is in the wrong. People like her make me furious and I sincerely hope she gets properly punished for it.

If I hit a cyclist, even if it were my right of way, I would be shaken and upset and while I'd doubtless be angry, I would also be thinking 'shit, could I have done something to avoid that?', because good driving is defensive driving.

In other news, MRA twits are MRA twits.

GoblinGranny · 12/06/2013 13:49

I don't see why this is worth posting in FWR TBH.
She did a nasty thing and tweeted about it without embarrassment, and the MRA are using it as something to complain about.

What a surprise. She was wrong on all and any accounts, and gave ammunition to others who were looking for any reason to denigrate women as a whole.

Then you pop up defending her OP?

WidowWadman · 12/06/2013 13:48

My husband is a cyclist, and I'm always concerned about drivers. He once had been knocked off by someone who drove off (she turned into the road he was cycling on - he was wearing hi-vis) - he caught up with her at the next red light and gave her an earful. She then complained he would have traumatised the child on the back seat by shouting at her.

No consideration how traumatised my children would have been if he had been seriously injured or killed by her actions.
