I don't think I have ever posted a thread in this section but here goes...

Someone on my FB just shared this.

Between that and the whole ARRSE debacle I think I have started taking this section a bit more seriously.

Missing the point a bit!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/03/2013 13:42

Wow, I didn't realise this was still active.

I do agree that the (far too) easily accessed porn culture probably has had an effect or maybe attitudes never actually changed at all, it's just simply easier for people to voice their views in relative anonymity now, compared to pre-internet.

OP posts:
TheOrchardKeeper · 20/03/2013 13:52

Agree with that too ^

MurderOfGoths · 20/03/2013 13:51

I suspect it's also because of a backlash against feminism, as instigated by the media.

TheOrchardKeeper · 20/03/2013 13:19

I think the porn/lad mag/page 3 sort of culture has normalized the objectification/pornification of women that seems to be so mainstream in the present day.

that's how it seems, though I think it's also a snowballing effect, where one encourages the other, which encourages the other again etc etc until things worsen, like they seem to have done over the last decade or so.

Can't say for sure as I was only a babba in the early 90s! Smile

NormaSpoonOeufEggcher · 20/03/2013 12:53

oh - x posts

NormaSpoonOeufEggcher · 20/03/2013 12:52

The objectification and pornification that seem to be even more mainstream too may have something to do with it?

TheOrchardKeeper · 20/03/2013 12:52

It must be something to do with the easier access to/change in the styles of porn & the lad mag thing that kicked in during the early 90s. Not that I'm saying that's what's caused it.

I just don't think it's a coincidence if you see what I mean!

grimbletart · 20/03/2013 11:20

FWIW - I've been a feminist since childhood and expressing feminist views openly since my teens (which means since the 1950s) and I agree that there has been a regression, whether it is the anti-women sentiment, pinkification of girls (my shorthand for stereotyping really) that has really kicked in since the 90s.

My take on it is that in the 60s, when women really started refusing to be put into boxes, through the 70s when legislation started catching up with the apparently strange concept of women as human beings many men treated feminism as a joke i.e. "the girlies are getting a bit uppity aren't they ha ha?".

With the 80s and 90s when real strides were clearly being made on the equality front the types of men who had previously treated feminism as a joke suddenly realised equality was going to be for real and began to hit the panic button as in "let's put the girlies back in their proper place". Thus the MRA types, whose charming examples of manhood we've seen on MN recently.

As to how you change it. It's difficult to polish a turd, so I'm not sure.

namechangeguy · 20/03/2013 10:47

What is the cause of this regression? How do we fix it?

NormaSpoonOeufEggcher · 19/03/2013 23:46

Agree with darkest. I am 43 now, and so was in my 20s in the '90s. I did have a few lightbulb moments then. But I think many things are worse now.

TheCautionaryWhale · 19/03/2013 20:46

It does seem that way dark' , from the outside at least

Darkesteyes · 19/03/2013 20:41

Cautionary Whale yr mum is right. It was a bit better in the early 90s. Im 40 this year so i was in my 20s for most of the nineties and is definately got worse.

runningforthebusinheels · 19/03/2013 07:49

bump

MurderOfGoths · 18/03/2013 22:11

That's grim, however do be aware that it is relatively easy to troll google with stuff like that. All you need is a very busy website and for all the members of the site to put the same search phrases in over and over again.

BertieBotts · 18/03/2013 21:15

Yes the way those are compiled is that every search anyone makes on google ever is logged somewhere, and the most popular phrases are suggested, since it's most likely you'll be looking for that thing. So it's shocking because it means that is what the most amount of people are looking at.

I find that with most things if I say the word "feminism" people run a mile. Whereas if you actually bring up the issue you wanted to discuss without saying "feminism" most women seem to identify with them. Funny that Confused

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2013 21:04

Shock But that's the problem, it really isn't. The reason it's there is because it is the most popular actual searches. :(

Just told DH about this and asked his opinion and he just shrugged and said it's nothing to worry about, that it's 'just google' WTF?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2013 20:35

I'm in Glasgow so it's not hard to find lots of feminists here and I am pretty sure we had a slutwalk here too. The downside is that there is probably so many because of the attitudes of so many men here!

Bertie I've heard of that, I don't know how though? Probably through people liking it on FB. I'll give it a miss tonight, I had a long look at that site, the one that's been bothering here for the past while today and I still feel ill, proper physically ill.

TheCautionaryWhale · 18/03/2013 20:33

I've noticed the lad bible but not bothered questioning that page like I do some others (via my page, not personal account) because it's like a drop in the ocean...unfortunately. The lass bible was created as a backlash but isn't much better & is just a tit for tat of sexism.

I've stayed clear to be honest!

BertieBotts · 18/03/2013 20:31

Woo!

I was probably about 22 when I started getting angry about stuff too.

On the subject of facebook, and also people in their early 20s, I noticed recently that a lot of my friends have "liked" a page called The Lad Bible, I don't know if you've noticed a similar trend, but whenever someone reposts something from there it's always utterly disgusting and offensive, especially towards women. I was intrigued enough to take a look at the page itself the other day and was horrified. And yet this seems to be the overriding attitude of my generation. Nice :(

TheCautionaryWhale · 18/03/2013 20:30

I've lived in a bit of a backwater town in norfolk so the few times i've casually talked about slutwalk, one billion rising or anything like that I've been cast funny looks and told i'm obviously 'one of those man haters'.

Moved down south recently so it's not quite as bad as it was but not met many who aren't scared by the word iyswim.

TheCautionaryWhale · 18/03/2013 20:28

Agree with AF, it isn't a nice realization!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2013 20:28

Yeah AF, you're right. It was a pretty sickly feeling actually and has been brewing for the past couple of weeks with all the stuff that's been happening on here.

TheCautionaryWhale There are lots of women my age that I know who are pretty strong believers. :)

Nice to see another recruit

Not so nice for you though. That lightbulb moment when you realise that actually feminism is more important than ever is certainly not a misty romantic notion. It fucking hurts
