A poster on another thread said she views feminism as the struggle against patriarchy. That is how I view it too. I believe that is considered the rad fem stance?

Another poster said she didn't believe in patriarchy

I don't geddit

Why/how are women so unequal if not for patriarchal societies? WHO has been oppressing us?

Please tell me what you think, if you don't believe in patriarchy

In fact remember one radfem who is disabled complaining that when she tried to work on disability issues within the mixed sex disability movement, she came across issues such as disabled men arguing they had a right to use prostitutes. She felt she could fight more effectively in the women's movement.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:31

Goth - Haven't we had this argument before where various radfems said actually they were black, poor, disabled or a combination thereof?

GothAnneGeddes · 11/06/2012 14:30

Porto - But if you are, for example, black, poor, and/or disabled then you don't really have the privilege of just focusing on women's issues.

and me!

No problem porto - me too!

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:24

Dittany hasn't flounced has she?

bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 14:24

i agreed with alot of what I saw nyac write

I still think flouncing is daft from places like this... meh

Anyway...my opinion of 'flouncing' is definitely a tangent....

If I sound a bit dim - I am still very much learning Grin

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:23

Porto - I had never come across the term kyriarchy until about a month ago, but have seen it lots since then. Every single time it has been mentioned it has always been in relation to - what about the men.

bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 14:21

haha anne dont be ridiculous!

Portofino · 11/06/2012 14:21

I don't have a problem with the idea of Kyriarchy. Though not in the guise of the article linked to by elcletic - which was really about the menz, when you read between the lines. I am guessing what is being argued here is that when we are discussing feminism, we are focussing on that PART of oppression, but we are not denying that other forms of oppression exist - eg questions of race, disability, poverty etc. I agree with Eats above, that sometimes you have to choose what to focus on.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:21

bejeezus - dittany is nyac

bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 14:20

eclectic my point applies to everyone Confused
I dont know who dittany is

larry I had no idea that most people would agree with me/believe in the patriarchy when I started the OP-what are you trying to insinuate?

No one has elucidated any dissenting views IMO

stop trying to be clever

OP posts:
EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:19

larry - apart from other arguments, if this had been posted elsewhere, it would have been moved to FWR. Other feminism threads posted elsewhere have been

GothAnneGeddes · 11/06/2012 14:18

Bejeezus - nice bit of respect and compassion you've got for a fellow woman there.

larrygrylls · 11/06/2012 14:15

Bejeezus,

I don't believe in the patriarchy in mainstream Western society, and certainly within UK/Western Europe. I believe I elucidated why in some posts early in this thread.

However, if your OP was meant to be what it said, why have you posted it in an area where just about everyone will believe in the patriarchy. And, do you really want to hear and engage with dissenting views?

EclecticShock · 11/06/2012 14:14

Bejeezuz, does your viewpoint apply to dittany too?

GothAnneGeddes · 11/06/2012 14:12

EBL - saying something exists is not the same as describing how it intersects, how the multiple isms you may face interact or impact upon you. It's important that people can name their experiences and those names are accepting into the discourse.

bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 14:11

people flounce, when others dont concede to their ideas IMO...and that is not a discussion

OP posts:
bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 14:10

anne
I dont think its clear at all--like I said, I didnt really know that my views were 'radfem' until only very recently....

FWIW, I think flouncing off an internet forum is a bit ridiculous...didnt feel welcome? by who?????? soemtimes a forum doesnt suit a person, doesnt mean they have been made unwelcome (by a number of very seperate individuals, that dont even know what each other look like) Leave, find somewhere else that suits you better...but to announce you are L'EAVING'?! why? so people will beg you to stay?

OP posts:
EclecticShock · 11/06/2012 14:05

EBL, I have seen the same as GothAnne, as I'm sure have others.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 11/06/2012 14:03

Goth - Nobody disagrees that other stuff like racism, etc doiesn't exist. I have never seen anyone arguing here otherwise. So I really don't get what your point is?

GothAnneGeddes · 11/06/2012 14:02

Bejeezus - The implication has been pretty clear and for example, when someone tried to discuss Marxist feminism on another thread, they were quickly told that it was false and obscured patriarchy.

Likewise when KRITIQ, (who has since left these boards, because she felt unwelcome here), tried to talk about intersectionality in feminism, again short shrift was given.

Anything other then "Yay, rad fems" is not welcome, apparently.

bejeezusWC · 11/06/2012 13:54

The problem is that there seems to be a big attachment to Radical Feminism, with the idea that anyone who disagrees is a tool of the patriarchy/not doing feminism properly

no one has said this on this thread Anne
