Netmums and feminism

Just noticed there is a thread in NM about feminism. Reading it, although some of the posts are fairly basic in terms of ideas (not a criticism, just an observation, everyone starts somewhere in terms of ideas like this), some would fit in very easily to the feminist board here.

It surprises me that someone with that level of analysis of feminism would be on NM and so I wondered if these posters are also on MN. That kind of makes sense a bit more.

So really I am asking, is anyone on here also posting on the feminism thread on NM? Not asking for NM names just wondering. And if you are, why do you post on NM?

given you don't know nm why speculate
it all sounds v superior of you

allthegoodnamesweretaken · 26/05/2012 14:04

I used to post on NM, I found it very helpful for practical advice with breastfeeding, but once DD got older and I had more time to think and talk about other stuff, I realised that you can't really speak against the general consensus without being beaten down with insults and howls of indignity if you dare to suggest someone could be wrong, so I came over here and felt I belonged a lot more!
I once posted on a thread about lapdancing, the general consensus on NM was that women were empowered by chosing to pursue a pole/lap dancing career, but when I suggested otherwise many NMs accused me of personally insulting them and their choices.
I can see where you're coming from OP, but it can't be anything other than a positive step for NM to be starting up a feminism thread. Hope they get a forum like this one.

NigellaLawless · 25/05/2012 12:33

OP I was gonna give you my first ever Biscuit, but since you have realised how utterly condescending your op was, I decied to dunk said Biscuit it in my Brew and eat it instead Grin

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 12:27

Yeah I shouldn't have started this thread should I. I'm so knackered that sometimes I think what I am asking seems fine and then when someone else points out the issues I think - yeah of course! How did I not see that.

OP posts:
fuckarama · 25/05/2012 12:24

It kind of reads like "why are they asking over there with the pink glittery tickers and not keeping the sensible grown up debate for here"

And I'm sure that's not what you meant Grin

(I really genuinely don't mean that sarky and I wouldn't like you to be offended)

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 12:23

Sorry Alameda I realise you are talking about MRA's. I agree

OP posts:
EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 12:22

Alamdea - sorry, did I misunderstand you?

Fuck - I kind of regret starting this thread actually

OP posts:
fuckarama · 25/05/2012 12:21

Emmmmm, aren't you sort of asking this on the wrong site? Shouldn't you be asking on Netmums?

Alameda · 25/05/2012 12:21

Where did I mention feminists in my last post?

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 12:19

Alamdea - feminist are not smug about undercover identities as you put it. They are just trying to avoid being harassed online

OP posts:
Alameda · 25/05/2012 12:14

I don't care if you are an MRA. They are so smug about their undercover identities, as if anyone gives a fuck?

VashtiBunyan · 25/05/2012 11:49

Op, wouldn't the easiest way to find out why radical feminists post on NM be to go over there and ask them?

BadSkiingMum · 25/05/2012 11:39

I agree it was a pretty patronising post, as if MNers have a monopoly on political awareness or something...

I used to post on another parenting forum (not Netmums) and while I do find MN much more 'feisty' and more likely to host posters who are highly educated and very aware, there were several aspects of the other forum that debated some issues at a deeper level than is done on MN. For example, this other forum had a whole section devoted to lactivism and the politics of breastfeeding. The odd feminism thread was not unknown either!

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 11:32

Jing - I am a feminist and sometimes even call myself a radical feminist. Although I feel a bit of fraud to at times as I don't feel I know quite enough. But what I have read I agree with.

It really was a genuine enquiry sorry. I have posted a few threads under feminism about links for blogs, etc, but I am not an MRA. I understand people being cagey which is why I said I don't expect people to say what their NM names are. I was just interested in radical feminists perspective on why they would post on NM. But I do understand people's reticence.

OP posts:
ComradeJing · 25/05/2012 11:23

Apologies if it's a genuine enquiry Eats but there has been a lot of stalking of vocal feminists on MN and the rest of the internet. People are understandably cagey.

I like repeat threads. It usually means a whole new group of people to brain wash to the feminist cause. :o

Or whatever it is the MRA think we do on here Hmm

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 25/05/2012 10:57

Have there? I missed those. Sorry didn't realise I was committing the sin of repeating a thread subject.

OP posts:
ComradeJing · 25/05/2012 08:39

Creepy.

Why have there been a number of posts in the past couple of months asking if MN Feminists all hang out somewhere else?

Pan · 24/05/2012 22:31

to be fair, NM is far more 'active' in my part of the world, and I have over the years picked up on a few good cues from there. (obv the huns and the general level of antiseptic discussion is Hmm so I haven't looked over there in quite a while..as well as dd getting older so I feel less of a need to post stuff in general.)

Eats - I am guessing that you know by now your OP was incredibly patronising Smile. The other thing is that it sort of takes a lead that MN FWR is the last word, or a yard stick, in womens rights discussions/concerns. Which isn't quite true.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 24/05/2012 21:09

Sorry wiggles. Didn't mean to be derogatary. As I said there were some very detailed posts on the feminism thread on NM with great political analysis.

OP posts:
wigglesrock · 24/05/2012 20:17

I'm on NetMums, its alright sometimes, your OP is one of the reasons I don't usually frequent the Feminism boards on MumsNet.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 24/05/2012 20:10

I'm not on NM, went over to have a look because people were talking about it on MN. And no, not databases

OP posts:
VashtiBunyan · 24/05/2012 20:00

Are you compiling a database, OP?

Bunbaker · 24/05/2012 19:56

"Emphatic - I haven't read lots of posts on NM I admit. But what I have read there doesn't seem to be posters who have the same level of political analysis as on the feminist board here for example. So it surprised me."

So, if you think you are too intellectual for NM why were you on there? I can't believe how patronising I find your comments.

As far as NM are concerned I suspect that as posters use real names they are less likely to post inflammatory posts.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 24/05/2012 19:55

No feminism isn't for boffins. But long posts talking about feminist theory rather than just equality do mean a resaonably high level of political awareness in the posters.

Antsy - Didn't realise there had been I that was pulled. Wonder why? I take your point that if people are harassed and abused for intelligent debate, they will be very careful what they say. And you don't think paedophiles should be burnt in the street! :)

OP posts:
thechairmanmeow · 24/05/2012 19:55

NM is a very different enviroment than here, women talk about their favorite porn over there without judgement. and posters dont wade in once they have established that one poster has a different veiw and therefore becomes the victim.
i wouldnt assume they were any less feminist or capable of intelectual thought just because they chose a less volitile enviroment.
