Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

"uni lad" and lad culture

There was a big furore recently about the "uni lad" magazine advocating rape. They closed their website to "clean up their act" but their facebook page is still so misogynistic :(
This popped up in the activity feed on my facebook the other day. I got involved but ended up having more sexist comments fired at me and in the end deleted my comments to avoid becoming a target.

Fortunately it never reached 15,000 likes but this type of behaviour is becoming more and more accepted.

Facebook don't seem to give a shit though do they? They are too busy deleting people showing pictures of breastfeeding.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 23:28

Defamation I meant!

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 23:23

What if I sued though? For defemation of my gender? Would that work? Women go to court for sexual harrasment etc don't they?

VictorGollancz · 10/04/2012 22:11

KellyKettle No, it can't be. Racist and homophobic statements/actions are classed as hate crimes and are therefore taken much more seriously as a result.

For reasons unfathomable to me, crimes against women, hate speech that incites violence against women, etc, are not legally defined as hate speech/crimes.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 22:11

Ok josephine Hmm

Whatever.

JosephineCD · 10/04/2012 21:12

That bit about "clunge" just comes across as bullshit that Jay out of the inbetweeners might come out with. I really wouldn't read much into it tbh. It's just teenage bravado.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 19:34

But it's down as one of the disallowable things on FB Myleene

MyleeneCrass · 10/04/2012 18:52

There's no crime of inciting gender, hatred sadly, otherwise we could use it against the people picketing abortion clinics.

AliceHurled · 10/04/2012 18:35

I've reported a gazillion groups and never had an email. Frankly Facebook don't give a shit, unless it's a picture of breast feeding of course.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 10/04/2012 18:23

I am still waiting for an email from FB apparently they email you re the group...

CupOfBrownJoy · 10/04/2012 17:22

God that link is depressing. They're little immature boys though, trying to be shocking to get a laugh.

Tragic...

KellyKettle · 10/04/2012 17:13

I would like to do something about his entire website not just FB. Can sexism not be reported to the police like racism? That's a genuine question, I have no idea.

KellyKettle · 10/04/2012 17:12

I reported it as did DH. I haven't checked today, any chance it's gone?

cinnamonnut · 10/04/2012 13:24

Both :)

Who? Cinnamon? People on here or on FB?

cinnamonnut · 10/04/2012 12:38

Yeah, I've got a few people reporting it so far.

OP posts:
AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 09/04/2012 21:34

Right PLEASE report the group....please. We have to do something and t's all very well sitting her and going Sad about it but that's of no use to anyone.

There were a LOT of comments responding to the filthy post above and only a couple of people tried to say anything back to the guy and it WAS UNIGUY that made the comment.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 09/04/2012 21:29

I just read this little gem

It's Saturday night and that means one thing: CLUNGE. If you're planning on staying in tonight you need to look yourself in the mirror, right now, and think, "What went wrong in my life?" Do you really want to be that person? You owe it to your penis. The sluts and their 'daddy issues' are waiting. Have a good night lads.

And I THINK that is one of their "writers" rather than a comment. That's enough for me...I have already reported them.

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 09/04/2012 21:16

I just looked at FBs policies and they say they do not allow "Hate speech" or "pornography"

And they include gender hatred in that.

flippinada · 09/04/2012 21:08

This hatred of women dressed up as edgy humour is so profoundly depressing.

It's awful that other women collude with it...I can understand why that happens but bloody hell, it's still awful.

cinnamonnut · 09/04/2012 20:00

I don't think emailing the uni lad creators would make a difference really.

KellyKettle · 09/04/2012 19:53

Me too cinnamon. There must be something.

MysteryHaggis · 09/04/2012 13:26

Totally agree that the class element is irrelevant. Where I was doing my undergraduate degree (only graduated last year), it was the 'posh' rugby boys who were the worst exponents of horrible, hideous sexism. Rape jokes, objectification, braying at women, etc etc etc. The uni has two unions and the rugby types all join one in particular- so in the end, by avoiding that union you avoid the worst of it- but then, why should we have had to? When I was there under duress for functions I always felt really unsafe. Its reputation carries and their sexism is challenged- mainly by the so called ' leftie plebs' in the other union, but challenged nevertheless.

I was in a languages faculty and there were relatively few boys/men, and the ones there were were generally lovely- perhaps because most of the women ranged from casually feminist to fiercely militant. There was one guy who had really hideous attitudes to women-he had various ishoooos with being 'rejected by sluts' etc but we all told him, continuously, that he was a twat, and no girl in the department ever touched him with a bargepole. A relatively unsexist faculty environment doesn't override the university-wide sexism though. Sometimes it made life really unpleasant. Unsure what can realistically be done about it though. :(

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 09/04/2012 13:04

Well Cinamon I note that the "censored" picture of a naked girl there appears to be what they call "A standard ex wench" shot....so does she even know her picture it being used as it is?

FallenCaryatid · 09/04/2012 12:04

I don't know what has gone wrong, but my university experience was certainly nothing like as aggressively sexist and objectifying as seems to be the case for many now.
We had certain lecturers with low expectations of women, we had attitudes and philosophies that needed challenging but I don't remember being a lamb in the middle of a wolf pack, or feeling helpless and silent and endangered by my fellow students.
