I see your point. My problem has always been that men will always be stronger, on the whole, and do not have wombs interupting their career paths. And they have the added advantage that in middle age, they have weathered better than women.I do think though that men in their 50s, on the whole, start to look older in comparison to women.Trouble is, again because of my points above, the most power is in the hands of 40 and early 50s.
Nature has it loaded in favour of men.

minimathsmouse · 04/04/2012 09:21

No, not as organised as the freemasons and certainly not with a clearly constituted set of aims. Men, yes but many women are supportive of the objectives in the sense that even successful career women might for instance be pro porn or say that women need to toughen up, or women should use what ever means to rise to the top, like flirt with the male boss. We buy into the idea that women must improve in some way, more make up, more clothes, plastic surgery, shave their legs, the list is endless and the admen bombard us with images of perfection that we feel we must aspire to. It has two major effects, economic and social.

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 22:03

Wow. Never thought about it much before, tbh.
Do you mean a bit like the freemasons? Are they all men?

minimathsmouse · 03/04/2012 21:58

Patriarchy literally means rule by the father but is taken to refer to the male dominance in society. Kate Millett argued that society is governed by "power-structured relationships, arrangements whereby one group of persons is controlled by another". Secondly, patriarchy is a structure whereby "male shall dominate female".

As a marxist feminist I believe the patriarchy to be a social/economic system that gives power to men in every sphere of life. They dominate through business, media etc,,,, so by making women dissatisfied they create a market in corrective treatments, beauty, fashion etc in which they can seek profit.

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 21:41

Didnt even manage to do the being a bit dim part right!

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 21:40

minimathsmouse, who are the patriarchy, who control the press. Not heard of that word before, being a bit dim.Do you mean men? Owners of the newspapers?
I tend to look at lots of newspapers online.I have noticed that the DM are putting on more and more stupid trivial articles. The articles that continually follow round the child Suri somebody seem to be particularly blah, and intrusive imo.

Sausageeggbacon · 03/04/2012 20:32

I can't understand why she wants the attention, when I was younger I use to wear thick jumpers to hide myself because if I wore a t-shirt men would automatically start talking at my breasts. 3 Children later it has't improved just I am older and wiser. So what if guys do these things, what does it say about the person that accepts that sort of treatment.

MizK · 03/04/2012 20:19

That article held a terrible fascination for me, I admit. I always read her bizarre work, a fact of which I am rightly ashamed.

My first reaction was laughter when I saw, after the attention grabbing headline, who had written it - this woman will write ANYTHING to get into the DM. I remember one article in which she'd written about dressing to impress other women, not to get male attention. Then she had written a separate piece about how she always used her sex appeal to further her career by making her male bosses fancy her.
It is so boring to hear about the supposed trouble looks bring to pretty people. It simply isn't true. Any disadvantages - pervy men, the very occasional bitchy comment from other women, is offset by the fact that people are generally appreciative of attractive people.
If she truly can't wait for her 'beauty' to fade, why all the makeup and styling? It's ludicrous.
From a feminist perspective, I wonder why she can't write about something more interesting that doesn't reduce women to either 'pretty' or 'ugly and jealous'.

wamster · 03/04/2012 19:50

Waah, been waiting a million years to quote Ms Julie Burchill but she is right. To paraphrase (OK, not quote exactly) a woman who has nothing interesting about her past 40, is asking for trouble as looks fade. And some people think she talks nonsense? Not me

Still, though, that I'm symmetrical, doncha know? Grin. Oh yes, like a rectangle.

Hopefullyrecovering · 03/04/2012 19:25

I hope they paid her a lot for that article. If people didn't want to talk to her before, I can imagine no-one EVER wanting to talk to her again.

BoffinMum · 03/04/2012 19:19

TBH I've barely bought a drink in my entire life, and it wouldn't occur to me to write about it!

KalSkirata · 03/04/2012 19:04

Im shedding a tiny tear for her tragic life
But blimey thats a badly written article. And she gets paid for this shite?

gabsid · 03/04/2012 18:27

She is attractive - yes
In her mid 30? (could't bring myself to read the whole article). Not an age where women are at their prettiest, at their best and most attractive maybe, but not at their prettiest.

To me she seems one of millions of attractive women and I am wondering why this article was written/published.

I feel like in a parallel universe Confused

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 03/04/2012 18:27

Does anyone else think her husband looks, in both of those pics, as if he's holding on to or reaching for her a bit weirdly? Not affectionately but proprietorially and bossily, a bit like he's holding a dog's collar.

He also looks like the mugshot they print in the tabloids when someone's been apprehended after committing a horrid and perverted crime

minimathsmouse · 03/04/2012 18:18

I used to read the mail , online is just dire though, nothing other than stories about women's clothes, bodies, relationships, it's depressing stuff.

Conchita, must be right, this nonsense sells and that is really worrying. Women having their minds messed up reading about celebs in swimsuits. It's a clear case of the patriarchy controlling the press and flogging the idea that all women's lives are lacking in some way. Usually in a way that plastic surgery, clothing and cosmetics etc, can improve it, any way in which money can be made.

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 18:04

Is she living in France? In which case, I would have thought the stuff she is able to write about in the DM would be more limited than if she lived in the UK??

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 18:01

Wow, thank you MN people for opening my eyes.

CheerfulYank · 03/04/2012 17:07

I've never seen anyone with the same surname as me before. How odd.

Anyway, wow. I just...hmm. Well. She's not ugly of course, but I wouldn't look twice at her. Of course, some people do just have a natural attractiveness about them that doesn't translate to photos and she could be one.

I do have a beautiful friend (far, far prettier than Ms Brick) and she has occasionally experienced stand-offish behavior from other women, and disgusting comments from men. But she's so happy and cheerful that she soon wins everyone over, and as for the men...well, she has a sharp tongue and a large husband. :)

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 03/04/2012 17:00

''She is either writing toot because they commission her to write toot''

This is where I would place my money. She's one of their freelancers who can be guaranteed to whip up an article which is slightly controversial just to get website hits, as was pointed out earlier.

There's another, a woman who every so often churns out an article on how rubbish state schools are and how she and her DH are bankrupting themselves to put 2 of their 4 children in private schools, and how guilty they feel that they can't put all their kids in private school.

Conchita · 03/04/2012 16:51

Sadly 'I am happy woman who does not have any body issues, relationship problems or gnawing doubts about mixing a career with a family' does not sell!

minimathsmouse · 03/04/2012 16:48

Maybe we shouldn't take what she says too literally. In one piece she says her husband dresses her, in another she dresses herself down in plain clothes.

Other anomalies include, husband to divorce her if she gets fat, she won't eat because she was once fat.

Another, she says that she won't get pregnant because that will make her fat and then in a different piece says she is trying for a baby.

She is either writing toot because they commission her to write toot or she is disingenuous and deluded.

bigpigeon · 03/04/2012 16:38

They are doing more and more crap articles designed to inflame people into responding. If you look at the more balanced articles (are there any in the mail?) they have hardly any comments but they know they can rile people up and probably think this brings more interest in their rag.

Conchita · 03/04/2012 16:24

[shuffles over from cynics' corner]
She's a journalist, times are hard and a newspaper are actually paying her to write this crap. So I think she is embellishing or making sh*t up in order to get commissioned. Beats going down the mines I suppose

amillionyears · 03/04/2012 16:23

Ive never questioned before why newspaper articles such as these are written.I must be naive. There are 2000+ comments in the comments box.

TheCrackFox · 03/04/2012 16:15

I feel her pain.

Women hate me and men want to be with me. I am very stoic about my lot in life.
