Tulisa is feminism's new hero

I think she's been incredibly brave this week. I can only imagine how mortifying and sickening it must be to think that someone you trusted has put intimate footage of you into the public domain. Full credit to her for refusing to be shamed by this. It's probably too much to hope that he's the one feeling ashamed, but he flipping well should be Angry

It's very instructive to see how eager people are, to immediately decide a woman is lying when it comes to consent issues.

I agree that many people are eager in this particular case to disbelieve Tulisa. That is in no small part because she has already categorically lied about the sex tape and for quite some time pretended it was not her in the vid and that it was a fake. Had she not lied people would undoubtedly be a lot more sympathetic.

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 22:19

Yep more objectifying of women and more of this entitled attitude from men.
Could this tape have been posted to try and ruin her image and therefore her chances of solo success?

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 22:19

We have no idea how the tape came out, and so to claim that its realease is 'sexualised violence' seems unreasonable given that the truth may be that the it was 'advertising'

Exactly

She has said that she didn't agree or expect to have this "intimate moment" shared with millions.

I believe her.

Just to add my 2 cents, its becoming too common for people (and in particular young teens) to do this, with no thought of the future.

I fell out with my brother when he was 17, I havent spoken to him since. He is now 21. One weekend when my parents were away, he filmed himself and his girlfriend, with her consent. Cue argument a few weeks later and the prick put it on facebook. It was shared, uploaded, sent to phones etc within hours. We only knew about it when her mother called to say she had been to the police.

I took him to the Police station because my poor parents couldnt face it. I got to hear such lovely things as "its her own fault" and "she asked for it". He genuinely, and I really mean it, it wasnt a act, he really genuinely thought that this was what constituted normal behaviour. He couldnt see what he had done for what it was, pure violation of this girl. This is why we dont speak. This is why he will never be a part of my sons life. Because he still cant see what he has done wrong.

I think if a look at the whole Tulisa thing without my cynical hat on, I think she reclaimed back a bit of power, but she shouldnt have ever been in this position in the first place. If I look at this without my cynical hat on, she doesnt need the publicity, NDUBZ have hard core fan bases, she is a judge on one of the top rated tv shows. So therefore she is also a victim of sexual violence.

If it is a marketing ploy, how terrible to be in a business where exploitation is the name of the game...I dont envy anyone that life.

Sorry for the ramble, no coherrent thought process on this one!

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 22:05

No sexual violence occurred in this case. To say it did is almost an insult to those women who've actually endured sexual violence.

miloben · 24/03/2012 22:00

And then we have the likes of Jan Moir in the Daily Mail giving off to women about how we should avoid being filmed blah blah. Yes, all well and good, but why not tell the MEN how to behave like human beings and treat their (former) girlfriends with respect? WHY does no one tell the men how to change...I don't get it!!

We need to address these issues legally and update our legal code to get this recognised as a crime of sexualised violence.

It's not sexualised violence.

But it didn't get put on the internet of her own free will did it?

Publicity stunt?

catsareevil · 24/03/2012 21:52

How do we know how it got onto the internet?

BasilFoulTea · 24/03/2012 21:49

I don't know whether she made the sex tape of her own free will.

But it didn't get put on the internet of her own free will did it?

KarmaK · 24/03/2012 21:18

She's clearly very manipulative. She makes a sex tape of her own free will. Lies profusely about it. And then releases a self-serving video and manages to get people to believe she is now some kind of hero. Hilarious.

catsareevil · 24/03/2012 21:15

I know that posting links to the daily mail is frowned on here, but this article does make some interesting points:
daily mail

I'm aother one who sees this as a publicity stunt.

Patienceobtainsallthings · 24/03/2012 21:08

Nyac ,I think it does show how vulnerable people can be and how trusting they can be of their partners.
You can be strong and still vulnerable ,especially when it comes to being in love.
I dont know the statistics but Im willing to bet a lot of young women's partners have asked to take naked pictures of them on their phones and that is what I refer to as a fact of life or regular occurance but hey maybe its not .I think Tulisa had guts to try and take back some power from her abuser.

Hoebag · 24/03/2012 20:51

I don't think it makes her a hero, and t bh there is a small part of me who wonders how 'accidental' this was.
Look at paris hilton her entire fame was based that tape tbh.
I dont think anybody thinks theres anything wrong with sexually active usually quite the opposite these days, IME. So I dont think shes achieving anything their tbh.

Lottapianos · 24/03/2012 20:33

Like many others on here, I have been sickened by the sniggering and rubbing-hands-with-glee that occur whenever a sex tape is leaked featuring a well-known woman. The 'silly slag should have known better' attitude is utterly foul, places all the blame on the woman and normalises the idea that men are not to be trusted and always take sex and consent less seriously than women. So I respect Tulisa for refusing to take all that abuse, and for putting the blame back squarely where it should lie - on the shoulders of whoever leaked that tape.

BasilFoulTea · 24/03/2012 20:31

I hope the police prosecute the guy who uploaded the tape.

Bet they won't though.

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:49

When this happened to Paris Hilton she went into a shop where the tape was being sold and caused a scene about it. She was obviously very hurt by the whole thing, which of course is what these events are designed for.

Nyac · 24/03/2012 19:48

It's not about vulnerable people though Patience. Tulisa isn't vulnerable, she seems like a pretty tough young woman. It's the fact that there are predatory voyeuristic men and boys who think nothing of violating their girlfriends' or sexual partners' privacy and sexuality. It's not a fact of life, it's a choice that men and boys make. Tulisa has been getting called names for this and the focus has been on her. We need to look at the boys and their iPhones.
