Women's Music CHAT THREAD

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/02/2012 18:41

I've been nattering away off-topic on Stewie's excellent thread asking for suggestions for her International Women's Day CD...so thought I would start an ongoing thread for anyone who, like me particularly enjoys music by female artists and female-fronted bands.

I'm not looking for lists of recommendations - there are two threads called Music By Women which have dozens of brilliant suggestions of artists to check out.

This is more about sharing a recent discovery (artist doesn't have to be new, though!) - a song, album, band, singer/songwriter etc. etc. that have inspired or excited you and you want to share. Or to chew the cud about anything related to women's music that catches your interest. Please join in!

Hmm, not a fan of that Hazel O'Connor but quite like the 'Secret' track and loved the Jesca Hoop - am buying the EP. You should get an iTunes commission, IC!

The KW Be-Bop track was fun, thanks, I'll keep an eye out for the album.

I knew Michelle Shocked had had her struggles, but that was an eye opening read Inmaculada.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 19/04/2012 13:48

Actually, on the subject of Michelle Shocked, that was a rather - ahem - shocking example of an artist not getting the monetary reward she was due when the bootleg Texas Campfire Tapes was released (having been recorded at the wrong speed because the tape recorder's batteries were running down!)

She later re-released a re-mastered version on CD (with the royalties going to the right place this time.)

She's certainly had an interesting life

A definite yes To Michelle Shocked, especially her first two albums, Skinny!

Speaking of rocking Bonnies, there's always Bonnie Raitt as well - not many women make their name as a respected rock guitarist the way she did (especially at that time, too).

Mmm... Mary Chapin Carpenter.....

Chuffed to see some of the thread's suggestions being picked up with such enthusiasm Smile

Oh, I remember seeing her play at the Queens Student Union, Belfast in was it about 1987? Yes, lovely stuff.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 19/04/2012 12:31

Anyone mentioned Michelle Shocked yet?

I'm very keen on stuff from Short,Sharp,Shocked and The Texas Campfire Tapes.

KRITIQ · 19/04/2012 12:19

Can't remember if she got mentioned further upthread, but I was very much enjoying Mary Chapin Carpenter last night.

BigBadBear · 19/04/2012 12:12

Ideally one of those lovely ones with the arms that wrap around the back please sweet :o

SweetTheSting · 19/04/2012 12:01

White coat, BBB? Wink

BigBadBear · 19/04/2012 11:03

Risk? I meant rock

BigBadBear · 19/04/2012 11:02

Well, you weren't really talking about risk, but Hazel and Bonnie are definitely the same era (in my head, at least).

BigBadBear · 19/04/2012 11:01

I lurve Suzanne Vega: Marlene On The Wall is one of my all time favourite tunes, as is The Queen and The Soldier.

If you are having a rock moment, I'd definitely give a nod to Bonnie Tyler :)

NicholasTeakozy · 19/04/2012 10:03

Just catching up and listening to Jesca Hoop. Wow, what a fabulous voice! Thanks for posting that.

SweetTheSting · 19/04/2012 09:48

Have been listening to my new Be Good Tanyas album, thanks IC Smile

InmaculadaConcepcion · 18/04/2012 19:16

IC's Tune For Today:

Talking of blasts from the pasts, how about Hazel O'Connor?

From the classic Breaking Glass album and film,

Blast from the past, good choice Sweet!

Actually, I've just spent a happy hour and a half listening to Jesca Hoop's entire current collection on Spotify and I have to say, I'm even more impressed. Excellent stuff.

Thanks IC, will have a listen when not at work. Glad she's lovely in person too Smile

The sun's out now so I think I'll switch to Tropical Brainstorm!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 17/04/2012 13:21

IC's Tune For The Day

Jesca Hoop is one of those artists who I hear on the radio and have to scurry to find out who it was because her songs pique my interest every time. Especially this one, from her recent Snowglobe EP:

Haunting and beautiful.

PS yes, I met Kathryn Williams once and she was indeed lovely. Exactly as you would expect from her music, really. Understated, pleasant, with nice line in wry humour.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 17/04/2012 13:17

Ooh yes, do like Kathryn Williams.

Have you heard anything from her new project?

It's a trio called Kathryn Williams Presents The Pond.

You can download a free .mp3 preview of one of their tracks here

SweetTheSting · 17/04/2012 09:58

Rainy Tuesday today = Kathryn Williams for me.

This is from her album 'Little Black Numbers'. I saw her live once and she came across as the loveliest person!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 16/04/2012 13:12

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Android Lust, Clanger, nice one!

And that is a most excellent Suzanne Vega track, Sweet.

IC's Tune For Today:

I'm enjoying the new collaboration between Martina Topley-Bird (best known for providing the vocals on Tricky's Maxinquaye album, but she's done some excellent solo stuff too) and the electronica producer, Clark (he's just released a new album on Warp).

Secret by Clark and Martina Topley-Bird

Check it out.

I know we've had Suzanne Vega upthread but I've got this one in my head today:

NicholasEggcupkozy · 09/04/2012 09:51

Thanks for the tip Clanger, I've had a listen and yes, that is to my taste. I like very much. She sounds like Peaches crossed with . I know this is a thread for music by women, but I think that song is good enough to be included here. In fact, there's another music thread it's going on: the 'goosebumps' thread.

TheSmallClanger · 08/04/2012 14:09

NicholasEggCup, have you heard Android Lust? She's an industrial/electro/goth producer and singer who makes really interesting music that you might like.

I'm going to try some Whalebone Polly.
