Oh boy I walked past a house today where a bloke was instructing his tiny son (about 2 or so I guess) about knuckle sandwiches.

The brutalisation/ masculinsation process, starts young. You've got to make sure boys don't express fear or upset by the time they get to school, especially in tears, haven't you? Otherwise everyone else's sons might bully them.

Sad
InmaculadaConcepcion · 25/02/2012 20:08

the constructs of masculinity and femininity

Yes.

Most definitely they need to be demolished.

Or at least as a starting point, recognised for the restrictive bullshit they are.

madwomanintheattic · 25/02/2012 19:38

Aw, stewie, stripped is on my shelf, I must remember! Will go and watch thread so I don't forget to drag it out....

Masculinity was my first love, what a walk down memory lane. Smile

Beachcomber · 25/02/2012 19:27

I agree very much with the article. It makes me feel a bit depressed though. It confirms what I think as a radical feminist, but thereby also confirms that we need rid of the constructs of masculinity and femininity, if we want basic level humanity.

And, that 'ain't about to happen.

Good article though, highlighting much of the problem. But we all know that both men and women will fight the solution (dissolution of the current system which is based on dominance and submission as imposed, controlled and policed through the mechanism of gender).

Long road.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 21:41

Oh, how lovely. I will hope that he/she keeps the somersaults to the least annoying areas of your anatomy.

Smile

We will keep talking, and eventually what women say will become the norm.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 24/02/2012 21:22

We'll just have to keep on talking. Loudly.

So far, so good thanks Jericho! Just keeping various limbs crossed that we can clear the next few hurdles (results of T1 screening the most imminent) and travel hopefully onwards.
Although it's very early, I can already feel the fetus doing somersaults. Crazy.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 21:08
Smile
Dworkin · 24/02/2012 20:44

Oh yes Jericho I have to believe it too. :)

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 20:36

Cross-post.

Dworkin -yes, right. Sad

But we know this is happening. We see it, and we are talking about it, and there are thousands and millions of women like us talking about it. Eventually we will get there. I have to believe that.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 20:34

Thanks immaculada -how is it going with your pregnancy?! I saw from the other thread you are expecting. Smile

Dworkin · 24/02/2012 20:33

Yes Jericho women are treated as sub human. We are game. Like those animals that are hunted.

Am I right?

InmaculadaConcepcion · 24/02/2012 20:29

Good point, Jericho.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 20:25

Sorry, this makes me angry.

We don't 'just focus on the victims'. We constantly talk about the people who do these things. We may be ever so ineffectual but we do try and we're not invisible. The men who do these things may not notice women speaking out but I am arrogant enough to be sure women do notice.

AyeRobot · 24/02/2012 20:03

Hehehe, Basil.

Are you feeling as jaded as I am?

InmaculadaConcepcion · 24/02/2012 19:54

Sounds good Stewie

Yes, that awful oppression.

Why is it that so few arseholes, hold so many decent people in this psychological captivity?

Trills · 24/02/2012 19:43

The rest was good too, but that was something that I hadn't seen addressed before.

I found the part about the men not really wanting to participate interesting - reminds me of the Nazis (it'll be worse for you if you don't)

is good on "The Man Box" - his term for the cult of masculinity.

There's not really a lot to say about this is there?

Except how awful it is. How it brutalises little boys and teaches them that being a man is about being a horrible shit. How difficult patriarchy and the cult of masculinity, makes it for men to be nice people. How amazing it is that so many of them manage in spite of it. How depressing it is that most are so thick that they can't imagine being a man might actually mean not being a dick. How irritating it is that they are always on CiF. What else?

Oh I know. How terribly sad it is, to see men policing their son's masculinity, making sure they measure up. Brutalising them early, to make sure they don't get bullied at school by all the other little brutalised boys. Sad

Sorry am reading Mary Daly atm and it's a bit of a downer.

BasilRathbone · 24/02/2012 19:33

The article is good

That's why the CiF ers don't like it.

I do venture out into the rest of the internet sometimes.

It's nearly always much thicker than here.

AyeRobot · 24/02/2012 19:27

I don't really know what to say, Trills, apart from that I agree with it.

Hypermasculinity is harmful. Twas ever thus. I'd like to think that there is a solution but tonight I am very jaded and can't see it.

Trills · 24/02/2012 19:19

Anyway, what do you think of the article?

OP posts:
Trills · 24/02/2012 19:19

If you think they sound thick you clearly don't venture out onto the rest of the internet much...
