The "Smoother you" section in Sainsbury's

Okay, there's been a lot of talk about the feminism section lately, so I wondered if any of you might be able to help me work out something.

A few months ago, I noticed the hair-removal products section in Sainsbury's had a little signpost saying "Smoother You". For some reason, this really annoys me, but I can't word to myself why?

I know that I am not against people using hair-removal products, if they so choose, but I don't like that sign. I think it should say say Hair Removal Products. But I don't explain why i feel that.

Yeah!

CardgamesFTW · 24/02/2012 22:22

So is anyone up for some creative sign sabotaging remaking? Sounds like fun!

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 20:58

In context of how women are supposed to feel about their bodies, I would imagine that it is a natural aroma that women are supposed to be trying to mask.

The natural aroma with all the pheromones in it and that...

But that's just bizarre.

No more bizarre than some of the things we do over here probably that I'm culturally used to Confused

Still bizarre.

AIBUqatada · 24/02/2012 12:49

"Denatured You"

You what?
Cleaning stuff?
Really?
Urrrgh.

So people are squirting coca cola up themselves?
I'm shuddering here.

What's wrong with a good old-fashioned wash?

WidowWadman · 24/02/2012 12:11

It's a squirty thing which is used to squirt cleaning stuff up your vagina, for that extra clean feel.

It's mostly an US thing and unsurprisingly not very healthy at all.

SardineQueen · 24/02/2012 12:08

But what is a douche? What is it?

TheBigJessie · 24/02/2012 09:16

I like the craftivism idea, but I think we need more research into Sainsbury's signposting ideology nationally first. Is this an isolated incident? Or will we have to set up mass production of our signs?

Also, I keep being reminded of the articles newspapers run in August, claiming ##% of teenagers think douching with coca cola is a form of contraception.

isn't douche just another word for idiot nowadays?

TIDDLYMUM · 23/02/2012 22:37

My God- those 'manly' willy wipes- that's hilarious!!!

My friend lived with us for a while and kept trying to convert me to Femfresh Intimate wash- god it bloody stinks, theres still a bottle in the cupboard somewhere. Quite happy with a splash of shower gel on the old growler thanks!!!!

DillyTante · 23/02/2012 22:33

Eg 'unnatural you' or 'hair keeps you warm' or something more witty.

DillyTante · 23/02/2012 22:31

We could replicate the sign in, say, crochet, to make it say what we want.

DillyTante · 23/02/2012 22:29

This thread is making me laugh!

Can I just make a point, while graffiti may be illegal (I dunno, is it?) there are other types of graffiti which are theoretically removable, & therefore make a statement without being permanent. I'm talking craftivism!

AyeRobot · 23/02/2012 21:43

Everday I walk past a SpaceNK and I wish I'd stopped and taken a photo of their last but one poster. It was a list of words like smooth, clear, fresh, plumped(?), moist, clean, etc and it just seemed like a list of "this is what you should be. And Your Not." Not skin. Just YOU.

If you're not smooth, then you must be rough. Dog rough?

S'all bollox, innit? Bet's there's not an aisle for those.

SardineQueen · 23/02/2012 21:36

AHA
Your DD2 and my DD1 will be top distraction stylee.
Leaving DD1 who looks innocent and harmless to write ARSE over everything while no-one is looking

DD2 would be v good at distraction techniques
DD1 will be able to follow instructions to the letter and so may be best utilised in an undercover way

True. I don't think DD knows how to spell "arse" yet.

Hmmm interesting

Trying to think what an appropriate response is.

Can you dress up in a black catsuit tonight, break in, and write ARSE over the top of the sign with a marker pen?

Or would that be disproportionate?

TheBigJessie · 23/02/2012 19:01

You will be delighted to hear I visited my local Sainsbury's, purely in the interests of research.

So, on one side of the Baby Requisites aisle, there is Smoother You, comprising women's razors, Veet, and Palmer's coconut oil lotion. Then there are hair products, entitled Haircare, in a straight-forward manner.

Then there are men's razors. No sign at all!

Then there were toothbrushes and toothpaste, which had a sign saying something boring and straight-forward.
